What does /who/ think about one of the worst stories of Nuwho and how has it changed over 10 years

>>70664682
>>
>>70686979
It's overblown, it's just a slice of life episode with a really goofy portrayal of a creepy monster idea, in other words an average Rusty episode.
>>
>>70686979
>one of the worst stories

>>
>>70686979
I honestly enjoy it until takes a sudden head first leap into the toilet at the point of the abzorbaloff reveal. The final coda is nice though.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZWGeidvrJw

What the fuck were they thinking? Even the kid who designed the monster hated it.
>>
There's something about that ending that really really really pisses me off, it's been 10 years so I can't remember that reason. Maybe other people felt that way as well and that's why it's one of the worst episodes. What is it?
>>
It doesn't work for me, because they want me to laugh at something that isn't funny at all. I don't understand how is this passing for comedy.

I mean, it's probably black comedy, but somehow it isn't funny. They made a lot of effort to have me empathize with characters and then turned them into a piece of alien ass. Does Rusty think this is a fate fitting a Doctor Who fan?

Agreed 100%. It's like Moffat wanted to just get the Gallifrey bit over with so he could get to his precious sooper speshial companion piece.

What does she eat? Does she breathe? How does her jaw function for her to speak if the hinge doesn't exist. Where does all of Elton's cum go when she swallows? Can she swallow? How long before she was begging for release from this hellish existence? How long will she live? Is she immortal? Does the Doctor know the answer to any of these questions? Does he even give a shit?
>>
RTD said on the Toby Hadoke podcast that he talked to a young fan on the phone who said "Last weeks episode was rubbish" referring to L&M.

I loved that episode when I first saw it. The concept is cool, but it really goes to utter shit in the last 5-10 minutes when the guy become this ugly monster.

>Does Rusty think this is a fate fitting a Doctor Who fan?
>>
This is what will happen:

>Series 10 ends with a rip-off of Journey's End. All the Moffat era characters return to help 12 face off against Davros.

>The episode ends with Davros' prophecy being fulfilled, The Doctor shows him compassion, ultimately ending in a regeneration.

>Series 11. The new Doctor's debut proves a huge success. Everyone loves the new bonkers, fun Chibnall era. The Doctor is back to his wacky self and is more akin to Smith and Tennant. There are two new companions. A hot 20-something year old from the far future, and a contemporary Earth man who is gay and sassy.

>Series 12, Chibnall decides to do a 'darker' series. The ratings flop again. The BBC are considering scrapping the show.

>Series 12 is universally panned for being too edgy and dark. The gay companion dies in episode 2. But one episode stands out. Episode 6. It's described as "the best episode since Genesis of the Daleks". And it's written by Gareth Roberts.

>Series 13. Chibnall has been sacked and the Gareth Roberts era has begun. No liberal agendas are being pushed, and each episode gets 12 million viewers at worst. The series is a global success, and wins BAFTAs left right and centre. Roberts is hailed as the savior of Doctor Who, and even makes a cameo appearance in several episodes to the delight of the fans.

>Series 14. Gareth Roberts casts himself as The Doctor, and after just one episode is voted #1 Doctor, above Tom Baker and Andrew Garfield.

>Doctor Who is saved.
>>
>>70687394
>All the Moffat era characters return
And dropped, Amy and Rory will literally never ever return because their actors are done with it sadly.
>>
>>70687435
They've both said they'd be willing to come back. They won't be back because Moffat isn't going to pull a Journey's End.
>>
>>70687480
Well, Moffat said "The Master" wasn't going to come back so maybe there's still hope, right? Moffat lies all the time.

This is a funny scene because it features heavy Christian imaginary but angels are actually serving the villain. Thus Doctor is actually an atheistic figure here and this entire scene is a reference to an infamous incident when Richard Dawkins adcended to heaven and called God a loser on national television.

This may be an unpopular opinion, specially here at the Dr.Who main thread:

I don't get the point of Dr.Who (at least the "modern" seasons"). In most of the episodes I've seen, the writers just seem eager to write fantasy/ science fantasy stories but they all have to have the Doctor in them of course and I feel like they'd be better off just doing short stories.

Then the even fewer episodes I've seen with what I guess is main plot just seem so bloated with stupid "clever" phrases and "meaningful" moments that just honestly makes me notice the wackiness of the setups even more because they are trying to take them so seriously.

Also what the fuck is with the hot women companions, why does this guy actively seak women to go with him?

Keep in mind my knowledge about this is just surface level, but I wanted to share that.

I think she's in a good position to, better than most have

There was a special between her debut and the previous companion's last appearance, she had a high profile announcement, and by the time Series 10 airs people will just be happy the show is back

A few nods wouldn't make much difference to all that if they even happen

Talking in terms of NuWho

Martha followed ultra popular Rose, the first companion for a lot of viewers at the time, after a special in which the Doctor was moping about Rose

Donna wasn't well received after her first appearance and also was known for her sketch comedy more than as an actress

Amy was part of the unproven all new revamp that was following ultra popular Tennant so there wasn't an established Doctor to rely on

Clara followed the Ponds who were also popular, and debuted in a half series during the 50th year when all anybody was really interested in was who was coming back for the anniversary

Not saying Bill won't have some challenges, she just seems to have a few more things working in her favor
>>
>>70689332
>she just seems to have a few more things working in her favor

Moffat said in DWM that Bill is similar to Donna.
Fucking predictable.
It won't work. She'll just spout 'sassy' lines in every line of dialogue she has to the point of it becoming irritating. At least Donna had a tragedy and was fleshed out.
Bill will be a comedy character.

In a way i see we're your coming from and partly agree, I wouldn't mind of doctor who became more of a anthology show. It's like each episode has to balance the Doctor, the companion, the series arc and whatever each story is about is put to the back burner.

Because the two stories she's already been in have been absolutely dreadful. Not down to her of course but both Death in Heaven and The Magician's Apprentice are the two single worst stories of the Capaldi era.

Also Chibnall will probably want to do his own thing with the Master, if he uses the character, and that will probably mean a recast.

>>70692140
>>70692128
Don't be so bloody rude !!

For your information I do not "come on here and have a worthless pop" I have been watching Who since 1981, I'm fully aware that there are elements of the show that are great, indifferent, and plain damn awful, and have no problems in giving praise where it's due and criticism where needed. What I get "sick and tired" of is people posting unsubstantiated criticism - saying "I can't stand The Witch's Familiar, it really wasn't for me, I thought it was shit" is fine, whereas "Watching The Witch's Familiar makes me realise that Moffat is a 3rd rate hack who shouldn't be allowed to write for TV ever again" is, to my mind, unnecessary and idiotic.

Now I'm certainly not accusing you of that, so I apologise if you took my post as a personal dig at you - it wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, just a comment on the general state of this general right now that seems to be full of people posting about how shit the writers are on the show (Mark Gatiss I think comes in for some really nasty, unwarranted abuse) as if they could do better themselves.

RTD got dog's abuse quite often during his reign once the euphoria of knowing that the show was back had died down - that seems to have escalated since Moffat took over, and he has gone from "wow - Blink, Empty Child, this bloke is brilliant" to "he's destroying our show, he cant write for shit" in quite a short space of time. Chris Chibnall's efforts for the show thus far have not been universally regarded as classics, and yet at the moment people are hailing him as the new Messiah who is going to save Who from the mire that Moffat has apparently plunged it into. That will probably last until the first "clunker" of his first season, or until he hires Mark Gatiss or Steve Thompson or Gareth Roberts to write a script, whichever comes first. I can't quite understand the thought processes behind it.

Having gone from midway into Tom Baker's run, then watching the entirety of Pertwee and shooting ahead to The Seeds of Doom, here are some observations.

- 4 is much more of a cold, alien, heartless dick
- He seems to know everything already rather than have to work it out
- Sarah Jane feels odd in this serial and I don't know if it's a general thing or serial specific but her acting seems a bit lackluster compared to during 3's last series
- The show seems to be entriely studio based and shot on lower quality cameras or something

Really? How so? He seemed more capricious to me. Your observation that he seems to know everything fits well with this line of thinking. I began with 3 and ended with 7 and always thought of him as my favorite Doctor besides 5.

>>

Pertwee seemed more concerned for what was going on, and concerned for every single person involved. He was a warmer presence. Baker feels like he just wants to sort out the big problem and doesn't really care for the little people in his way. It's like he treats everything as a game while Pertwee treats everything like a serious issue.

He's definitely very alien, while Pertwee was very human, or at least became moreso as his era progressed. He started out quite cold and alien, however.

I've watched all the way from Robot to Brain of Morbius, and I've seen a couple others over the years. I actually like him a lot and think he is very good, I'm just stating what I felt having gone straight from the end of 3 to the middle of 4. The progression probably would have felt a lot more natural if I watched them all in order and didn't dart about like this.

Seeds of Doom commentary, part two:

- It's really weird seeing Boycie from Only Fools; his voice sounds off but I don't know which is his real voice
- It's a "The Doctor refuses to talk until you threaten his assistant" episode
- They've very obviously dubbed the dialogue spoken out in the snowstorm, resulting in a very clear, loud, unnatural sound
- Some of the snow looks like a camera effect
- The cliffhanger to episode 2 is quite good
- Lis Sladen does a very convincing "I am very cold" shtick

Part Three:

- When did they start shooting location work on video? Season 13, I presume, since I remember vividly Revenge of the Cybermen was on film.
- I hate the way light reflects onto the video cameras
- The Doctor just straight up (tries to) break someone's neck, god damn

Episode Four:
- This is horrifying
- He doesn't deserve this
- Fucking hell
- The show seems to have a larger budget now

Episode Five:
- Shooting guns seriously messes with the video image
- Sarah Jane is much better after episode one
- She is fierce and fabulous in episode five
- The Doctor in The Silurians: "That's murder. Cold blooded murder!
- Sarah Jane in Seeds of Doom: "That's murder. Cold blooded murder!
- Was that intentional
- Why can't I post

Episode Six:
- The special effects are really good, especially the house being destroyed (inside)
- Weird framerate on the model shot of the house/Crinoid
- They did deserve it, I'm afraid

First episode aside, this was a really good serial.

>The Doctor just straight up (tries to) break someone's neck
No. If he was trying to do it he would have done it. He was buying time to escape, not trying to kill the guy if he didn't need to.
>>
>>70696351
What would that particular action do other than break someone's neck, it's a very paculiar way to incapacitate someone if that is not your intention
>>
>>70696555
Maybe the Doctor knows a way to safety incapacitate someone by twisting their head.

If he was trying to break his neck then he clearly doesn't know how to do it, the guy stands up completely unharmed within a minute. You think the Doctor just attempts something he's never done before hoping it'll work at a vital point in their escape?
>>
Turns out the location work on Seeds of Doom was done on video because they actually planned to have The Hand of Fear (which needed CSO) close out seson 13, but there were serious issues with the script, and SoD was written in a hurry to fill the gap. I wonder how Seeds would have gone if they hadn't known they were using video, and were able to create an abnormally large monster.
>>
>>70696861
He seemed very violent in this serial, using a sword and brandishing a gun. He also seemed very tetchy and yelled a lot. Maybe he was just in a bad mood and took it out on the guy.
>>
>>70696861
It was attempted murder m8, just deal with it.
>>

As someone who has profound knowledge of the universe, it's laws, and humanoid anatomy he should be able to figure out exactly how much force he needs to break a neck.

If he was trying and failed, you'd think the guy would be more fucked up . Instead we get some guy that just stands up and brushes it off as an inconvenience. Either the Doctor is completely incompetent and doesn't know enough to cause even a little harm to someone or he wasn't actually trying to harm someone to begin with.

I agree. I think it would be a better episode without cybermen. They could reveal that there is no threat and that the Doctor was just so lonely and scared of facing his death that he was super desperate to find clues of alien invasion where there were none.

I also never liked the "i talk to babies" thing. Although it's neat how they managed to turn it into something sort of dramatic/touching this season.

It's one of the worst stories not just of NuWho or even Dr Who as a whole but of the entire history of storytelling. It has probably only got shitter (if that's even possible) over the last ten years but it's not like I'm ever going to watch it again. Once was once too many.
