Warcraft makes $124 million in China in 3 days, breaking several records

http://deadline.com/2016/06/warcraft-conjuring-2-now-you-see-me-2-weekend-box-office-1201770307/

Thoughts? Sequel confirmed?
>>
It'll have to make at least $2 Billion in the first week to make a profit. DOA flick t b h
>>
I watched it. Never read any lore, never played the games, zero expectations.
It's ok. Better than Xmen Apocalypse by a long shot, but some of it felt forced, orc moses didn't make any sense, and there's almost no conflict resolution at the end. It's one of those movies that makes me want to post a picture of Frodo and ask why none of the orcs realized that green magic shit kills everything it touches or why such an honor bound society follows a dick orc that pisses on their honorable ways.
>>
This movie will be a money printing press and will spawn 5 sequels, 17 spin-offs, a short lived tv sitcom, and a book of pottery written by an orc in mandarin.

Thing is, they will all be shittier than the original movie. Which is pretty shite. By the end, even the diehardiest fans will be crying in the dark of the night whispering for it to end.

And that's when they will reboot it.
>>
>>70687761
I still want a StarCraft movie
>>
>>70687539
>I watched it. Never read any lore, never played the games, zero expectations.
Same but i liked it a lot.Cgi was amazing, it was a beautiful movie. And it has an interesting story that seems to going to expand and will pay-off in the later movies. It reminded me of LoTR in that regard.
>>
>>70687761
no it wont, they didnt pander to the masses and tried hard to statisfy warcraft fans in the first movie and they wont start with pandering in the coming movies. or at least i hope so.
>>
>>70690590
that's what i believe aswell anon, a friend of mine watched and said he didn't get much of the story because he only played warcraft 3,if they make another and continue with the second war it'll be less of a problem since the first movie also shows a lot of the traits of the characters involved, although i don't get why they changed some of the things like garona killing king llane at the dark portal, khadgar hopping into the font and becoming fel infused to drain the life out of an injured medivh, doomhammer being such a bitch in general and dark portal switching to stormwind when there's no dark portal in stormwind, all of this and probably some more are just wrong, garona never actually sided with humans, llane never told her to kill him, khadgar was sent by kirin'tor to apprentice under medivh, karazhan was stormed by the troops, garona and lothar and khadgar dealt the killing blow by killing medivh with a sword, dark portal never switched to stormwind and doomhammer was one of the most courageous orcs ever lived
>>
>>70690590
>they didnt pander to the masses
ummm china is the masses now. they pandered to them.
>>
I thought it was the case that those that fund movies don't give a fuck about international performance and only care about how it does in the US.
Is that just a meme or is there some truth to it.
It did well overseas, but if it under performs domestically there will be no sequel.
>>

I just hope they hurry up with the sequel. It's literally fucking impossible to cover even a tidbit of Warcraft's awesome lore in a 2 hour movie.

My only gripe with this one was related to this. Dude was in Dalaran for 1 minute. Talked to the Naaru for like 15 seconds. There is so much deep and interesting shit behind everything they showed in the movie but they didnt cover any of it.

Still loved it though.

it will be atleast a good 4 years before a sequel is possibly coming out. With Duncan making another of his own smaller movies and the fact that Warcraft 2 will have to sit in the render oven for atleast 20 months it's gonna take long.

In the movie's version of the lore, she's half human half Orc, with her father being Medivh. Or at least that's what's implied.
But in the original game lore, she's half Orc half Draenei (the blue people at the beginning)

maraad is her uncle.
>>
>>70687539
I'm not sure how they'll resolve the Gul'Dan thing either. You need the orcs defeated and imprisoned for the Thrall story to make sense.
>>
Watches it last night. I can see how people with no knowledge of Warcraft lore would get lost. But I've loved wow lore, and I kept up fine. I fucking loved it. One or two cheesy moments, but so much else was really great. I'd give it 8/10 easy.

>>
>>70698008
Why didn't it make any god damn sense?

You are wrong btw.
But try to tell me why you aren't.
>>
>>70698008
it made sense in the original game because the Horde was on Azeroth for years before attacking Stormwind. It just took them way longer to retcon Garona's heritage than the timeline
>>
Gul'dan saw the Horde led to supremacy over most of the Kingdom of Azeroth, but on the eve of the final siege of Stormwind, Gul'dan was aware of a raiding party against Medivh's tower of Karazhan. Realizing that the Azerothians intended to slay the Guardian, Gul'dan hastily ransacked Medivh's mind for the Tomb's location. He was still deep within the Guardian's thoughts when Lothar and Khadgar killed him, ending Medivh's treachery and forcing Gul'dan into a coma.

Without the counsel of Gul'dan, Blackhand was easily slain by Orgrim Doomhammer, who, with information acquired from an interrogated and tortured Garona, proceeded to slaughter Gul'dan's warlocks and the majority of the Shadow Council.

Just like the movie :^)

>>70698025
she is still talking from her POV. you can't take it has fact.

If it said "Garon the half human" sure but it says "as I" and considering she was lied to from birth it means nothing.

>To demonstrate my 'loyalty' to Orgrim and the Horde, I promised to create a host of undead riders that would be completely loyal to him alone. Although the Doomhammer did not fully trust me, the idea was sufficiently appealing, and so I was allowed to enter seclusion to create this new legion.
>Even with the aid of my Necrolytes, I was unsuccessful in bringing forth this undead force. Failure and weakness were all that these minions could offer me, until I sensed that while their spirits were willing - it was the flesh that was weak. I summoned them to a great alter constructed of Ironwood and Blackroot where, at the height of a black incantation, I took the lives of every last one of them. In the bloody wake of their executions, the Necrolytes would then, at last, nourish my creation of the ultimate undead servant.
>Using what few resources I still controlled within the Horde, I acquired many of the long-dead corpses of the fallen Knights of Azeroth. Into these twisted and decayed forms I instilled the essences of the greater members of the Shadow Council who were quite willing to return to the mortal plane to wreak terror and havok once again. I furnished each of the dark riders a jeweled truncheon through which they could better focus the unearthly powers they would brandish. Into these jewels were infused the raw, necromantic magiks of the freshly slain Necrolytes. Thus were the Death Knights born.

can't wait for the second movie. ty based chinks

I went into this film with the lowest expectations possible, it wasn't a perfect film by any means, the first 25% dragged for a bit, the dialogue was very videogamey, but damn it picked up and became fucking kino by the end.

>that sargeras transformation
>khadgar actually becoming likable by the end of the film
>and neat twist on the Garona assassination with Lane
>Durotan and Guldan fight, Durotan's death was actually emotional

So what changed in the movie? I saw it but I don't know my warcraft lore

I thought Lothar, Khadgar and friends fight them back through the portal and get trapped there, or is that after the events of the movie?

Garona they made a lot more of a protagonist than I remember
>>
>>70701396
I really hope there's a massive naval battle.
>>
>>70702211
This movie made it about 75% through the First War.

Khadgar seals the portal from the other side to end the Second War, and is presumed dead. Lothar also dies in the Second War to Doomhammer.
>>
>>70698510
In the movie it is implied, but in the comics and WoW it's implied she's half draenei.
(Especially they comics, because she has the iconic glowing eyes.)
>>
>>70691644
You would need:

1: Rated R
2: Big budget for effects
3: Body builders who are good actors

Never gonna happen.
>>
So Lothar is King now. Doesn't that mean he has to marry his sister? Also, why is she his sister and obviously not white like he is?

not going to happen in movie two now since Ogrim's left the Horde. reckon Garona will do it instead or they end up together and close the portal from the other side with Khadgar. Alleria and Turalyon will probably have reduced roles or play second fiddle to Garona and Lothar.

It says a lot considering that LoTR is considered "serious" fantasy, when warcraft which everyone though would be a joyless cashgrab managed to captivate me more than a peter jackson film. It's really great, it has flaws, but it's strengths shine brightly.
>>
>>70702345
>Alleria and Turalyon will probably have reduced roles or play second fiddle to Garona and Lothar.
Alleria was in the front row of Llane's funeral. I could see them focusing on her more, especially as a counterpart to Zul'jin if they include the Quel'thalas campaign in the next movie

>>
>>70702866
Well I mean he leaves Khadgar mere seconds after they glassed Medivh.

Could be delayed effects from the pool.
>>
>>70686918
As a fan of the games, I find the beginning to be quite jarring and a poor setup for the rest of the movie. The scenes with humans are quite palatable, and would make sense even to people that don't know Warcraft as they follow basic fantasy conventions (here's people, here's their king, here's some magic, here's some dwarves), but the opening scene was much too fast paced. The minimal narration does not do enough to alleviate the suddenness or properly set up the orcs and their motivations. The interactions between Kadgar and Medivh are also strange and out of place. The changes to Garona are fucking stupid. She's supposed to be Guldan's ace in the hole, one last victory in his failed campaign. Also, Varian is supposed to witness his father's death if I'm not mistaken. A very important part of his characterization, and helps set solidify the conflict between alliance and horde. Lets not even get started on Doomhammer and Blackhand. Overall, I enjoyed this movie despite the strange pacing and weird decisions. It really only gets better from here as far as sequels go since the later games improve greatly in writing, and Blizzard would be fools not to follow up.
>>
>>70701501
But Ner'zhul was there, only for like "blink and you will miss him" moment a couple of times. He was that one with skull drawn on his face, less bulky in build, standing always slightly behind the big hitters like Grom, Kilrogg and Kargath.
>>
>>70702367
Well I see your point.
It's probably just that I'm one of those faggots who hates every Peter Jackson Tolkien adaptation with a passion.
I mean don't get me wrong, they are really impressive in a lot of departments, and I will defend them on the grounds of music, cinematography and costume design. I just hate them for their approach to the legendarium.

Still, it's not a good sign when the main concern of critics is how "refined" the source material is, rather than what the mission statement is, and how they accomplish it.

Medvih is her father. In the book, he thanks his steward for giving him time with his daughter, just before he walks into the pool and turns full possessed. An anon posted a screenshot from the book a while back, sadly I don't have it here on my phone. But yeah, apparently he is. Guess he traveled to Draenor and hung out with some orc girl before the story started.
>>
>>70704290
Medivh is her father according to the movie novel. That part right before he kills Moroes? Theres a line dropped, he says "thank you letting me see my daughter."

One weird addition was Varian has a sister now. Maybe she gets killed in the Stormwind savking and he and his mother flee with Lothar to Lordaeron. That fuels his hatred more than his fathers death. Especially since his father told him to protect them.

It was a nice touch seeing most clan chiefs. Seeing Kargath made me giggle, but i was happy he and Grom were shown to be rithless assholes.

Also dem elves, I look forward to a Windrunner sisters intro next movie. And paladins! And dragons! Ah shit Im getting hype again.
>>
Holy fucking shit that ending.
>>
Watched it yesterday.

This movie is okay for the typical moviegoer who doesn't know about warcraft and it's great for somebody who knows about it and that's basically the main problem with it.

The reason for this is that movie is missing about 20-30 minutes of extra screen time to more adequately set up the context of the movie and to develop the characters some more. I really loved it when I recognized Grom Hellscream in the background. I also perfectly understood everything that was happening around Medivh and his inner struggle with Sargaeras. However other people are going to be scratching their heads a bit.

All this translates into problems with pacing and editing. Some scenes feel forced like the movie is making large leaps in the story. I'm really hoping that what they said about the special edition being 40 minutes longer is true and we get to see it.

They also changed a lot of the story elements which doesn't bother me since adaptations are like that but it does screw up some the character dynamics going forward.

The CGI orks were frankly really great. Although I have a bit of a problem with them being way too big compared to the regular humans. Orks were always bigger and stronger but not to such a degree that their fists are as big as half a human. The magic was also done pretty good.

Overall, I found it a lot better than Apocalypse and I would love to see a sequel.
>>
>>70705327

I share your sentiment anon. For a lot of people I know that watched it, who know nothing about Warcraft, the movie was fun and enjoyable. Gripping even. A good number of them also said they liked Medivh a lot and the twist of him turning out possessed was quite loved. A lot of people here complain how normal moviegoer would not understand the movie, but that's crap. It's easy to understand and follow. Certainly could use more time to flesh out characters, but as a first Warcraft movie it was great.

Loved my man Grom in the background, even if he didn't speak.

Saw it today.

Apparently critics are tearing into this thing and the movie isn't selling well in the US. I hear China loved it though.

Can't say I was a fan of the film but the critic reviews seem too extreme. The writing was bad, the acting was often awkward, the CGI orcs looked weird with the humans when they weren't fighting, and the plot felt more like it was focused on checking off bullet points rather than building a narrative. That said, the story was still coherent, the special effects were all polished, and there were plenty of action scenes. Felt like a solid 6/10.

The changes they made from WC1 and 2 didn't seem that well thought out. WC1 barely had a plot and most of the franchise's early fluff was fleshed out in WC2 so the movie tries to be a mix of both, but then missed the big point of WC1 which was the orcs sacking Stormwind and moving up north. I don't give a shit about it deviating from the source material since the movie is its own story but this change results in there being no real conclusion to the movie. When the big "Warcraft" logo appeared on the end I almost thought it was a joke due to how sudden it was.

tl;dr Can't call it awful, can't call it great, can't call it faithful but it was never meant to be that anyways, and so far I also can't say that it will be successful enough to warrant a sequel unless China carries the sales hard.

I went in thinking they should've just made the first movie WC3. After coming out I can say that's even truer now, everything they tried to do in this movie would've worked far better with the Arthas story.
>>
>>70703778
yea but i think they didn't want to add to many characters or demons etc to confuse people. i mean if there gonna wanna make it sell they had to change the story.

i personaly thought it was prety dec apart from mediev i didnt like him much nor the younger wizard much but w/e.
>>
>>70707768
they would of completely ruined arthas if they rushed his story and did him straight away, if they build to it and do it properly with illidan etc it will make them shit loads of money
>>
>>70698771
And yet here we are eight fucking Fast and Furious movies into the series and they're all cheesy as shit. Critics are only a tool used to HELP GET SALES, if the audience is hyped enough around a movie they don't fucking matter.
>>
>>70707917
WC3's human campaign just screams "make a movie out of me!"

You've got big, flashy, and dramatic cinematics that are begging to be redone with high budget CGI (imagine the movie ending on the Arthas betrayal scene), a very tight knit cast of characters to focus on (Uther, Arthas, Jaina, Kel'Thuzad, Muradin, Mal'Ganis), a romance subplot, themes of honor, duty, revenge, etc., and more than enough material to make a trilogy off of. I also guarantee the movie would've made even more money in China due to the amount of dota characters that would've appeared in the movie. The foreign market would gobble it up.
>>
>>70707945
Cheesy they may be, but they are coherent normie bait that doesn't require autistic levels of lore knowledge of a dying game franchise to enjoy.

I was annoyed about how they treated Teron later on, like he was some random shadow council member that got put in a death knight.

In wc2 the manual said he was an ancient orc spirit. Wasn't even sure at that point if Gul'Dan was the one who raised him.
Thought he had been dead for a really long time anyways, made him more interesting to me. Like centuries ago there was a Ner'Zhul/Gul'Dan tier orc that died, and then got a chance to come back.
>>
>>70701501
Lore wise Grom stayed behind during the first war.

He was in the movie though, just never named
>>
>>70702211
They made Orgrim a frostwolf instead of a blackrock

They changed the circumstances of garona assasinating Llane (which i liked, the original "gul'dan just cast mind control on her" was stupid)

Because of the above, garona was not present in the raid on kharazan

No mention of the shadow council, gul'dan played a more active leadership role in the movie (in lore he and his warlocks controlled everything from behind the scenes through blackhand)

Lothar killing blackhand instead of Orgrim (so they'll need a new way to make Orgrim warchief)

Gul'Dan not in a coma after Medivh's death

Changed the death of Durotan & Draka, for the better. Originally were killed by Gul'Dan's spies after a meeting with Orgrim to talk about what a dick Gul'Dan was
>>
>>70708037
>WC3's human campaign just screams "make a movie out of me!"
Yeah, but it requires too much context from the other campaigns. In the Human campaign of WC3 Arthas becomes corrupt but then there's a whole separate campaign that deals with him helping to bring the Legion to Azeroth. Then inevitably you have to deal with Illidan and the fall of Archimonde. Even when you're dine with that you still can't focus properly on Arthas since you have to deal with Illidan's bullshit on Draenor all before you can set up the showdown with Arthas and get him to become the Lich King.

I could see it working as a cinematic universe akin to Marvel but there's no way you can do it as a standalone movie.

Well, I guess we get to find out if vydiakino is going to be a thing.

I think the best part of the Warcraft movie, review wise, is that so many of the reviewers comment that this movie was clearly made for the fans, as many characters are not properly fleshed out. This is of course an assumption made believing that the characters of the film are known to the fans. With the reality being that many of the characters arent well known with the fans, and those that are, where changed so much from what they were that they aren't the same character.

Is there anything good about this movie? Who the hell was it made for? It wasnt made for newcomcers, it sure as shit wasnt made for fans.

I fear that this result was inevitable before even the first shot of this movie has been made.

Minds behind Warcraft franchise have long become centered around World of Warcraft, which means that observation of WoW games and community can tell you a lot regarding anything that is consulted with Blizzard's WoW team.

When WoW's core zones have been remade from scratch in Cataclysm, any previous storylines regarding these areas were elaborated upon without leaving a hint as to what elapsed earlier. It was as if Blizzard's devs assumed that they would be making these changes only for those who were sitting in their customerbase since day one while simultaneously WoW's big hope was to attract new players who had no such previous experience.

I can't tell whether this is a result of target group calculation or downright arrogance.

I liked it a lot. Was it perfect? Not at all but it was way better than I expected it to be. 7-8/10.

The thing is, if they had just made a World of Warcraft movie, rather than one based on lore most players dont know about, it would have done a lot better.

Considering Cata was launched around the height of the games popularity, it was arrogance.
