i'm beginning to notice that if critics don't like a film, it's either irredeemably bad or against the status quo (or both).

It is against the status quo. To the extent that the movie HAS a message, its message is conservative.
But it's also a thoroughly mediocre, lifeless cash-grab, and it only exists because some fucking retard thought it'd be a good idea to spend millions on the movie rights to the game "Angry Birds." It's absolutely not worth seeing
