Why do Blizzard seem so keen to just retcon Ner'zhul out of existence? Do they feel that it makes Gul'dan any less of a hatable bastard to have him as an undermining subservient for a bit?

And how the fuck do they plan on ever doing a Lich King story without him??

>>
>>70664064
Ner'zhul honestly wasn't that important to talk about in this movie. It was Gul'dan who opened the portal. Ner'zhul at this time was wallowing in self pity. A bit weird that he wasn't in the prequel novel to this movie.

Although it would've been nice to see Ner'zhul as a cameo like we got to see Grommash, Kilrogg and Kargath.

Just make it some sort of demon. I always thought it was awkward how Ner'zhul was the original Lich King because he felt so not orcish or NZ like. He went from brute force orc to scheming Lich in one mindrape from KJ. It might as well had been a random demon.

Or it could be GD. Fuck it, he dies anyway.

>>
>>70669377
Problem with this is you kinda need to know a lot of wow lore to truly enjoy this
There is very little character development
I feel if you don't know who is who going in you're going to be completely lost
>>
Come to think of it... Marvel movies have been mostly about in-fighting in various degrees.
Even Ultron was Tony's AI at one point or something?
>>
>>70669440
I know almost nothing about warcraft lore and didn't get completely lost. Maybe the first 15 minutes was a bit confusing, but after that everything started to make sense.

Sure characters were a bit rushed when it comes to establishing them, but on the other hand do I really need to know every characters life story. Who knows.
>>

>>
>>70661622
Is it like avatar then? (Which I've only seen the nostalgia critic vid of)
>>
>>70664064
Well almost all of the retcons in this seem to be done with the aim of condensing the story. Bowie Jr said he has 2 more films in mind, so if we assume that he wants to do Warcraft 1 - 3, there's no way in hell they are going to deal with The Frozen Throne in that time.

The fact that Grom got 0 lines as well makes me think that he'll be getting the cut come the 3rd film as well. A huge time jump like there is between Warcraft 2 and 3, and the fact that almost all of the characters are replaced with new ones, would be very jaring for a film trilogy.

For example, they'll probably focus more on Doomhammer and Thrall, saving Doomhammers death for the 3rd film. Since Mannaroth is gone as well, Gul'dan will probably make it into the 3rd film as a replacement for the Thrall/Grom fight with Mannoroth. The fact that Lothar killed Blackhand shows that Bowie Jr is more intrested in giving the characters arcs that pay off rather than sticking to the lore. Doomhammer is obviously the one destined to kill Gul'dan in this version of the lore.

I mean, can you imagine how retarded it would be if Gul'dan just disappeared off to the tomb of saragaras in the next 2 films? It would be such a buzz kill.

Other retcons that seem obvious at this point are that Archimonde will probably be replaced with Sargaras, I could even see Jaina being merged into Khadgar since he just vanishes from the story like Gul'dan in warcraft 2.
>>
>>70670361
This.

>>70669377
If you're not a retard and/or you don't walk into it with a pre-conceived notion of the film content being 'beneath you', then you will enjoy it for what it is for sure. It's clear who is who and what they're motivations are, even if you don't know all their backstory.

Everyone I've spoken to falls into these two categories. They either went in looking for stuff to bash, or they just let it be and got their moneys worth.
>>
I really think 30-40 more minutes of character development and padding would've made this movie much better.

I enjoyed it but randoms and critics wouldn't I think.
>>
>>70670968
The actors couldn't act for shit, 40 minutes wouldn't have changed anything
>>
>>70663051
Well, if you're familiar with Warcraft war, he's not just evil, he's possessed. He's a pawn of Kil'Jaeden, who himself is a pawn of the destroyer of worlds, Sargeras.

In the end, Guldan has been promised godhood, which he will be rewarded by getting mauled by demons when the time comes.

>>70671575
Weren't the soldiers actual actors though? They did show the armor around a lot in live events.
>>
>>70671575
Pretty sure those soldiers are real m8. Thing is that every single orc looks really different and unique, so they were obviously aware of the copy-paste that usually occurs and so the fact that the knights look similar is obviously on purpose.

Also how the shit would they have time for the siege of stormwind? There's so much stuff that can be condensed. It would make more sense for Stormwind to fall either at the beginning of a 2nd film, or get rid of Lorderon and have the scourge plague wipe Stormwind out instead.

He was one of the worst characters in the movie. They completely butchered his character

In the game
>master manipulator
>managed to unite the horde and had the chieftains make a pact with demons
>uses Blackhand as a puppet Warchief while he rules from the shadows
>invades Azeroth under the orders of the Burning Legion, but clearly has an agenda of his own in gaining power from the Tomb of Sargeras

In the movie
>retard who's only in charge because he is the most powerful
>no blood pact, just 'muh fel magic' that's never explained where he learned it from
>Blackhand's Warchief title means nothing as Gul'dan's clearly in charge
>everyone in the Horde openly questions him constantly
>whines anout how everyone must obey him
>invades Azeroth because a demon voice told him it exists and he wants to go there for more fel magic I guess?
>>
>>70670858
The movie won't get any sequels. They won't butcher the RTS games anymore. If they wanna make shit movies they should stick to adapting World of Warcraft instead since that's a shit game.

Name one bad thing that Illidan ever did pre-TBC
>>
>>70679168
He literally was. Illidan only wanted to kill him because Kil'Jaeden gave him one last chance not to fuck up. And KJ wanted the Lich King dead because he hated the Legion's guts.
The Legion is a bigger evil than the Scourge
Therefore Arthas was the good guy
>>
>>70679211
Illidan was trying to destroy something objectively evil (the Scourge) because he was forced by his evil master.
It was that or dying, and even with that, there's literally nothing wrong with destroying the Lich King.
Arthas was just a brainwashed puppet.
>>
>Scourge is the good guy
>>
>>70661178
Cheech Chong
>>
>>70679211
Becuase Illidan needed Kil'Jaedens loyalty so that he could betray his ass and kill him and therefor strike a significant blow to the Burning Legion.
>>

>>
>>70679288

>>70679260
And the Lich King was fighting for his own survival too. And he would've worked against the Legion had they invaded before Arthas decided it's time to conquer Azeroth. Also one of the reasons he wanted to conquer Azeroth was to get a massive army and push the Legion's shit in
>>
>>70679373
>And the Lich King was fighting for his own survival too
So fucking what? The Lich King is as evil as the Legion, he murdered countless humans of Lordaeron.
>>
>>70679405
And the Legion destroyed hundreds of thousands of worlds
Face it, the Legion was the bigger bad and in that fight the Scourge were the good guys
>>
>>70679344
>im retardedz the post
>>
>>70679373
>That's literally fanfiction

No, he did it for the greater good

Based Illidan is the only one that has the power to destroy the BL without having to kill everyone and raise them as undead like Arthas wanted to do
>>
>>70679432
So what?
Illidan wasn't defending the Legion, he has no allegiance to it other than KJ threatening him.
He's not a mindless puppet like Arthas is, he already tried to escape them, he'll do it again as soon as he can.
On the other side, Arthas is a faggot that murdered his father and his kingdom and Ner'zhul is a piece of shit that destroyed Draenor, buttfucked the Draenei and set the Horde on Azeroth because the Legion told him so, only that he tried to rebel and got blown the fuck out, he's not good just because there's something more evil than him.
Fucking Arthas fanboys are goddamn retarded.
>>
>>70679523
How stupid do you have to be to not see the bigger picture? KJ wanted the Lich King dead because he knew he'd fight against the Legion if they were to invade again. It doesn't matter if Illidan was only obeying orders, he was doing an evil thing. Again I'm not saying that the Scourge are good guys, I'm only saying that in that conflict they were by far the lesser evil.
>>
>>70679591
>KJ wanted the Lich King dead because he knew he'd fight against the Legion
Literally everyone would fight against the Legion, not only the Lich King.
Why the fuck do you think they need him when the NIght Elves already defeated them not once, but twice? The Lich King doesn't fight the Legion because he wants to defend Azeroth, he fights them because KJ is mad at him.
And the reason why KJ wanted to destroy him was because he failed him, and this is already stated in WC3.
He wasn't doing an evil thing at all, he was obeying an evil master because he fucking threatened him, but destroying the Lich King is all but bad.

It wasn't failure, it was straight up betrayal. It was Arthas who told Illidan of Gul'dan's skull and that it will allow him to rek Varimathras.

Doesn't change the fact that everything he does is because KJ is still mad at him.
He doesn't want to defend Azeroth, he wants to defend himself, and killing every living being to raise them as mindless servants to survive is hardly "good".

Ner'zhul was not a brute force orc, he was the greatest and wieset shaman in the Horde at the time who got fooled by KJ but eventually wised up which is why KJ switched to Gul'dan who did not need to fool.
Ner'zhul tried to help the orcs but said fuck it and tried to escape but was captured by KJ who tortured and twisted his soul into the Lich King who wanted to fuck up KJ with his undead army.

You're right desu

The movie's biggest problem is that it's too short, which leads to shitty pacing and bad character development. Since they cut literally 40 minutes of footage from the movie, increasing the budget and including that footage might have turned the movie into pure kino.
The movie is still entertaining though, but hopefully we'll get a DC

>>

they should have got him to make this, would have been a masterpiece
>>
>>70680265

He was tricked into leading the orcs in an attack on the draenei.
Then he wised up.
Then KJ replaced him Gul'dan.
Then he betrayed KJ by warning Durotan not to drink Mannoroth's blood.

This is all true, but it's important to note that his betrayal wasn't really about helping the orcs as it was sticking it to KJ for tricking him.

Buuuuuuuuut

Then he, with Gorefiend, opened portals all over Draenor so they could ransack more worlds. This wasn't evil per se, but it was definitely in the same line of thinking that led him to attack the Draenei, a lust for power and control, except this time he wasn't being led around by the fake spirits of his ancestors.

Then, as his final act of selfishness and greed, Ner'zhul fled the Horde and Draenor as his actions destroyed their world.

Ner'zhul stopped being a good guy long before KJ killed him and turned him into the LK.

With how in control he was until the last bit the movie was honestly making it difficult for me to hate Gul'dan despite his ways. He just got shit done.

Portal to the other world needs souls? Slave asks to spare kid? No. Work needs to be done. Delaying will cost more time and resources.

Child of the clan is a stillbirth? Fuck this weak deer, it had its time. Cast revive.

A group of Orcs fell to humans? Sacrifice idiot leader. Upstart challenges you? Accept twice.

Idiot leader from before starts to flake? Cast buff, enhance fortitude. Group sweeps opposition.

Cheating was a foul and letting things fall apart just because of a few surprise tactics at the end was sloppy, but again until that last point he was too compelling to dislike. Especially compared to the rest of the cast who seem clueless and aimless.

Ner'zhul's role was given to Gul'dan in the movie as he's the one who unites orcs into Horde here so there's nothing to understand about Ner'zhul.
If they get to Wc3 and want to make Arthas Lich King they still won't mention Ner'zhul they'll just say he was corrupted by the Frostmourne.
It seems like Blizzard is trying to lower Ner'zhul's importance from the lore.

I saw one mention of that fight where it was vague.
Where the orcs claim it was a duel, and the humans claim it was an ambush.
Not sure if that source was actually canonical though, but I think that can make kinda sense.

I liked it, but I have some issues, basically broken down into technical and story wise.

I didn't care or like the humans, both in aesthetics and acting. They sucked. Secondly, the pacing was odd. Hopefully the home media versions fix that.

As far as story, I'm let down that the Orc pantheon of badasses were left out. Grommash, Kilrogg, and Kargarh had no speaking roles; and there was no Nerzhul, Teron, Cho'gall, Varok, or Drek'thar at all. I was also let down by the changes to the ending, Khadgar isn't even life-drained into an old man even though that was set up, Orgrim wasn't the one who killed Blackhand, Stormwind wasn't razed, and Gul'dan didn't fall into a coma when trying to scry Medivh's mind, which didn't happen at all.

Ever read Lord of the Rings? There's a ton of material not only cut, but also changed for the film. E.G Frodo and Sams master/servant relationship which is turned into a bromance to make the characters more likeable. So sometimes a change is to make the film more palatable, sometimes it's just a running time thing, E.G Tom Bombadil.

Warcraft the game series is just like a book. I don't know how long it is, but Warcraft 1, the game, has more than 2 hours in which to tell the version of the story that it does. In the film, they have to condense it into 2 hours without it turning into a mess. So they cut a few characters like the shadow council and Mannaroth, merge them all into Gul'dan and voila, Gul'dan is a stronger villian and we've also saved some screentime.
