Will it be good?

the book reads like nostalgia pandering written by a grade schooler, so I guess the movie will be a giant hit.

The book was awful. It was an overkill of 80's pop culture
>>
>>70639577
>>70639737
Agreed. Pure shite and a mostly embarrassing chore to read. The only mildly interesting parts I can remember took part outside the VR world.
>>
>>70639577

I completely agree. Everyone was recommending it to me and it was terrible. It was like something I would write as a child.
I do think Spielberg may be able to make a better movie though. I think Jurassic Park the movie is better than the book.
>>
>>70639871

I really don't remember much about the book other than it's a standard "guy takes down evil corporation and get's the girl". It was so bland and predictable.
>>
>>70639633
What is this shit?

I'd rather have a Sphere remake, or Forever War.

the boy-version of twilight, 50 shades of grey and hunger games
>>
>>70640124

Damn, never thought of it that way. No wonder the book sucked so much.

Is it the original book or whatever? The guy doesn't seem to know what it's like to have no life whatsoever. Regardless the prose is disgusting, guess I'm not watching this. That's the upside of those book movies - you can tell if it's trash even before you watch it.
>>
>>70639253
The book is atrocious. I'm not saying that's 100% indicative of what the movie will be (the Godfather books are god-awful), but it makes it harder to salvage something good out of it.

Especially because, unlike that Godfather example (among many great movies made over the years from shit source material), Ready Player One has an inherently crappy and cloying premise. "80's nostalgia" is really shallow and weak as far as underpinning thematic material goes; how far can you realistically go when that's the soul of your story? How far can near-religious worship of corporate pop culture from several decades ago take your film when it's being played straight and not as an examination/deconstruction?
>>
>>70639253
Well, the book was shit, so....
>>
>>70639633
Is this from the book? I couldn't even finish it. If it is I guarantee this board will have a thousand threads saying how good it is

I don't remember if that particular page is in the book, but that's pretty much how the book reads. It's quite a chore. When I started, it was fun, but by halfway through I was completely sick of it.
>>
>>70639633
Is that the leaked script of Deadpool 2?
>>
>>70640474
Nah, overzealous 80's nostalgia is one of the precious few things that's literally rebbit in the non-overused meme sense of the term. /tv/'s going to have a glorious shitpost field day with this flick.

I remember my manager telling me to audition for this, but the story sounded edgy and the website we had to submit auditions to looked stupid as hell, so I passed it. I will probably regret my decision
>>
>This VR world was created by a programmer who was obsessed with ’80s geek culture and built an elaborate treasure hunt into the game based on his very specific predilections. The resulting journey was a confectionary pastiche where the player who essentially “got” the most ’80s references was promised vast, godlike abilities, and the worship of nostalgia was framed as the path to happiness, salvation, and power.

it gets a lot better, i cringed my way through the first few chapters honestly, but after a while it turns into fairly entertaining pulp.

It took me a while to realize this, but ever since it's been a universal rule which only brought me happiness:
When you have to cringe/yawn your way through something, it means you should drop it and go read/watch something else.

My friend has been trying to get me to read this book for a while now. I'm happy I never bought a copy. I figured it was bad, but not this bad.
"Anon you love old culture!"
I don't mind references when well done. Listing off crap lacks any sort of creativity.

It's going to make so much money

Why not just listen to the audiobook narrated by the one and only Will Wheaton?

>“Here’s the deal, Wade. You’re something called a ‘human being.’ That’s a really smart kind of animal. Like every other animal on this planet, we’re descended from a single-celled organism that lived millions of years ago. This happened by a process called evolution, and you’ll learn more about it later. But trust me, that’s really how we all got here. There’s proof of it everywhere, buried in the rocks. That story you heard? About how we were all created by a super-powerful dude named God who lives up in the sky? Total bullshit. The whole God thing is actually an ancient fairy tale that people have been telling to one another for thousands of years. We made it all up. Like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

I'm reading this now. Great premise, but the 80s nostalgia shit is way overplayed and the narrative voice is very cringy at times. Trying too hard. Also toward the end it panders incessantly, and I try not to see SJW boogeymen everywhere.
