>Initially, Troi was planned as the eye-candy of the show. Gene Roddenberry intended her to have four breasts, before his wife told him this was a poor idea.[8]
Ladies and gentlemen, the creator of Star Trek.
Guy liked his tiddies
Nothing wrong with that

I, for one, would have approved of four-breasted Betazoids.

4 tits would have made tng legendary and not just something people bring up to fake geek cred
>it's a 'Worf helps deliver a human baby' episode
It's weird to me how millenial Trekkies keep harping on Gene's 1960s ethos and judging him by modern standards. Yeah, he grokked polyamory. Yeah, he fucked like AIDS didn't exist. Yeah, he liked as many breasts as possible. So what? Do you even understand free love?

That's why you see so many weird ships during the Dominion War - they just took random models and kitbashed them. That's how they came up with the Reliant in TWOK too. The Constellation was just the AMT Enterprise model, which is why the registry number is NCC-1017.

>>70551929
The Major reason why TNG and early DS9 didn't want to go CGI is that they didn't have the ability to do CGI in house, and they didn't want to bet the show on a 3rd party company that might go out of business and take proprietary software with it.
By season 4 of DS9 this wasn't a issue anymore.

Sorry, you're wrong (again).
TOS is the best Trek. It was syndicated for decades because of how novel the concepts were and how compelling the characters could be.
>>70553415
You talk like you're 12.
Earlier Star Trek had lesser production values but the atmosphere, the imagination behind stories and races, cultures, the choice of actors, all that was Roddenberry, his vision built the whole thing, the rest of the people were building on it and most of the time they are still only copying his vision and bringing it to today's standard.
That's why when they rebooted Star Trek they didn't reboot Voyager or DS9 but his original series, that's why all those years from now the most iconic Star Trek and most discussed ones are the ones he worked on, they influenced most of our today's standards, they influenced most of our today's visions of a peaceful/sf future.

TNG and DS9 for different reasons as both of them are vastly different shows in terms of Trek shows, but they both bring a lot to the table in terms of quality of writing along with story arcs.
>>70553673
TNG got better at Season 3-4.
Unfortunately, for you, your argument crumbles when faced with the fact that the original predisposition of the characters, the symbols of social equality and anti-posterity, the ethos and the Starfleet Prime Directive.. all of these things didn't change one iota.
In fact, if anything, Rick and his crack staff of TV gurus enhanced their original uniqueness by juxtaposing them with more action filled plots and new alien races who were always meant to be different in some way than the Federation.
Gene may have had some horribly miscalculated and still-born ideas but the ones that were important held up better than any other of the ideas that were later injected into the franchise.

This guy is entirely right.
TNG picks up considerably at Season 3 and is much more consistent, but shitting on Roddenberry is a terrible contrarian point of view that is based on absolutely nothing.
Roddenberry's ideas are Star Trek. You might like measuring the Federation against the Cardassians and the Dominion, a la Deep Space Nine, but everything the Federation is, the core foundation of Star Trek is and has always been Roddenberry's.

>>70554175
Well taking over O'Brien's wife was kind of a dick move; but they were at war with a group that had imprisoned them for thousands of years and its not like the Federation didn't do worse fighting the Dominion.

Dude would be dead inside the week.
>>70554366
It really wasn't until the very end that he was written as a "moustache-twirler"
He had a reason to dislike Sisko because he was the Bajorans' Emissary. He commanded respect from the Bajorans while Dukat received nothing but contempt and loathing. Dukat's dislike of Bajorans comes from the outcome of the occupation and his subsequent removal from authority of Terrok Nor. Sisko became the embodiment of what he wanted from Bajorans all along: unconditional respect.
But the end where he's talking about "An entire universe in flames" and shit just doesn't follow unless it's more religious mumbo jumbo brought on by being inhabited by the Pah Wraiths.

>>70555055
Well, come to _think_ of it, it was a ponderously misguided attempt to achieve an otherwise established unattainable speed in the Trekverse that was badly handled by the denoument's resolution of the underlying series arc - hence the disdain from the show's fans.

Mulgrew is such an ugly bitch. And worse yet, she was a shitty mother who severely neglected her own children for years just so she could play in a very shitty sci-fi series..

She is quoted as saying "Execution as punishment is barbaric and unnecessary," "Life is sacred to me on all levels," and "Abortion does not compute with my philosophy."[20] In her 2015 memoir Born with Teeth, referring to her being born with a full set of neonatal teeth, Mulgrew tells the story of being raped at knifepoint, being an unmarried mother who gave up her daughter for adoption during the start of her career, their reunion in 2001, and "the costs and rewards of a passionate life".[21][22]

What's the easiest way to learn Star Trek lingo and lore to participate in Star Trek threads as a 'native'?
I've only seen two episodes of Star Trek but I want to keep posting in these threads because I get tons of yous.

To be fair Gene Roddenbery was a talentlless hack. Most of his shows failed, even Star Trek. Only reason it eventually become a succes was because they ran the episodes over and over and over for years until it became part of our media culture.
>>70556051
this.
no one here actually watches star trek, we just pick up the daily memes from reddit.net and repost them here for (yous).

Initial star trek sucks, but if you see something enough you develop a taste for it.
Its the relentless reruns that made star trek great, not the initial poor writing

dammit, i keep forgetting how to do this screenshot stuff :p
>>70557095
Mate if you start to like it ,it would mean that it doesn't suck.
This episode is actually brilliant.
It took 14 rewatches to get it, but once you do it's great.
>>70556729
Been a rough morning, here's the three main writers / producers that matter in Star Trek.
>>70553608
TOS was good (when it was good) despite Gene's involvement, not because of it. Roddenberry fancied himself a writer, but he was really a hack. He was constantly re-writing stuff, not only to jew the actual writers, but to inject his filthy "creativity" into the show.
Not only that, but he was a filthy pervert. He was constantly trying to sex up Theiss's costumes - which, as we know, were already pretty damn sexy.
He was a terrible producer. The reason ST1 is known as The Motionless Picture is because of Gene: his involvement (or lack thereof) meant that everything was so behind schedule that there was literally no time to do proper editing (back then you couldn't just delay films like happens now). He was such a jew that he wouldn't allow his actors to go out and do self promotion. He was infatuated with Kirk (probably a lot of self-inserting there), and basically catered to Shatner's every whim, to the detriment of the other actors - even Nimoy, who was probably the main reason Trek had the limited success it had, was treated like dirt by Gene.
Gene's major positive contribution was his drive - really, his need for validation and success. He astroturfed the letter writing campaign that saved Trek from being canceled the first time. He actively encouraged the fandom that sprouted up during the 70's, even though he wrapped himself up in it to the point where the studio couldn't effectively separate him from the franchise, even when it was clear he was a hack. It was Roddenberry's constant pushing for a new series, or a movie, that got the first movie made, which revived the series such that it lasted 25 years of something in constant production.
Even so, Roddenberry was a hack, and his influence lead to the worst in Trek. We already know about ST1 and S1-2 of TNG. But his poison affected others. Shatner was probably the one person post-ST2 that really understood Gene and his vision, probably because they were so tight. ST5 was the result of that.

Thats not how it works. If you're forced to eat a food long enough that you dont like your brain will develop a preference for it eventually and you start to like it.
Same with star trek, the show was cheap to buy and air, so they just aired it relentlessly until it got a giant following.
