Visually the scene is supposed to be about the sublime beauty in a hopeless situation.

He wasn't forced out of the tang, he chose to leave. He also gave everyone else the same choice, but Asuka was the only other one to leave. Watch the scene again buddy.

In the end Shinji gets exactly what he wants but because he is crippled by the anxiety of fulfilling those desires and having nothing left to desire it is left ambiguous as to whether he is happy with his decision

The line 'why are you here' demonstrates this perfectly, Shinji doesn't know. He would rather stay on the knife edge of meeting his desire for Asuka than go through with it.

This also closely matches what Anno said about NEETs and how they prefer to stay insulated from society.

It's a complex text that gets a lot of hate because it really is 2deep4 some people.

Shinji and asuka were the only people in the known world who chose reality no matter how horrible over the tang delusion.
