In the book, Arya has dreams where she's Nymeria, her direwolf. You get a glimpse of Nymeria's story here and there. What it essentially amounts to, is that Nymeria is lost without a pack. But eventually finds a bunch of wolves, and asserts herself as the leader. Leading this pack, she starts hunting, and killing.
You can kind of draw parallels to Arya. She lost her pack. She doesn't have any true path. She just kind of wanders with bloodlust.
Every bit of Arya's journey threatens to erode more of her identity away. She can never be herself. And as long as she's not herself, then she's just this merciless killer. But every time she reconnects with who she really is, then she gains back some of her humanity and levels out.
This is why her and the Hound are so similar. Like the Septon said during the speech this episode: Being a killer was going against nature. But it's not too late to change. And that's what Arya is going to do. She's finally regaining herself, and in doing so, regaining focus.
Also... She did learn some useful skills in her travels. Sure, she didn't become a master assassin. But she's learned some deadly skills.
