Chris Evans is generally pretty terrible but his interviews with the guest stars have been extra bad. He obviously has limited driving skills and doesn't like to go fast.
Matt LeBlanc has actually been pretty good, he seems to be a reasonable driver as well. A show that he heads with Sabine and that old Irish (I think?) guy from ep 2 could really work.
Unfortunately I think the BBC has put all their eggs in the Evans basket and won't pull the plug on him.

The public doesn't seem to give much of a shit. Those that like him do so in part because he's like that.
However he was pretty clearly on the outs with the BBC management who had him on final notice over other things. I think if given a choice between keeping one of their best-performing and most marketable shows going as is or losing it they would have kept it but they had to act. They'd painted themselves into a corner with Clarkson, and equally Clarkson knew he was on a fine line.

My feeling is that they should start treating Chris Evans sort of like they treated James May. Make him the butt of most jokes, left out while the 'cool' presenters all hang out, amplify the awkwardness, make fun of him. The guy who tries to fit in and be 'hip' but hates going fast and can't do daring.

IIRC the whole producer punching happened after they stayed back several hours to do reshoots in the middle of buttfuck nowhere late at night on the condition they got a hot steak dinner when they got back. Producer said yes then didn't deliver. Clarkson lost his temper and the producer didn't handle the situation the way he should have.

Well, he supposedly does have a genuinely short temper when it comes to personal things (really prizes his privacy) and his personal time, as well as having a distinct dislike for arbitrary bullshit that gets in the way. And given his distaste for being overly PC he doesn't mince many words.

Honestly, he plays it up on purpose. One episode he's joking about roadkill to offend people, the next he's dropping everything to rescue a tortoise from a road. It strikes me that some people take his abrasive humor far too seriously. He doesn't strike me as a truly racist, sexist, or homophobic person, but he's not going to pander and he doesn't care who finds his language 'triggering'. His persona is that of a blundering ass, but that was what the show needed, and his indifference toward the PC crowd was refreshing.
I can see how he'd be intimidating, though. He can come off as the type who might be a bully, but I doubt James and Richard would be such loyal friends to him if he were truly the caricature he pretends to be at times for comedic effect.
