He was Robb's second and at the time of Whispering Woods was leading the bulk of the Northern army against Tywin. Robb literally only took the Calvary with him while Roose had the infantry, Who gives a shit if the Umbers have a grudge against Roose, Roose was Robb's second and was seen as that. Bryden would have taken command of the Stark Calvary in the Riverlands. He still would have broken the siege of the Riverrun but Ned still would have got killed. After that who knows. Roose was still sworn to the Starks he couldn't just cuck them. My guess is he would have attempted to make peace with the crown and become warden of the North until Bran was off age but knowing Roose he would have assassinated him and Rickon somehow. The real question is what would have happened with the Riverlands.
