The movie is fairly explicit but it certainly doesn't hold the viewers hand. Most of the message is delivered in repetition. The stories share pretty deep themes but seeing them side by side brings them to the surface. it is the narrative format which makes the themes accessible, all credit to the author.

David Mitchell's first four novels were great. I really thought he would develop into something phenomenal. For me, it feels like he's sort of petered out. The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet and onwards have been pretty limp. The Bone Clocks was awful, moreso for its attempt to bind all of his previous works together.
I'll still check for his releases, but I feel like he's on the downward trend.

I cant remember the book as well anymore because I read it right before going to the theatre to see the movie and have seen the movie too many times to remember what was left out. But I felt another strong theme was life is difficult but better when love is injected into it and that love is crucial if not the most important thing in the world. I honestly don't think that was really a big part of the book, Mitchell seems to be not particularly interested in romance honestly. Jacob De Zoet is probably the closest to a 'romantic' novel he's written and it's still grim as hell. His characters seem to more often be defined by independence and rebellion than by love, including in Cloud Atlas. Frobischer (the composer) especially is made out to be more obviously morally ambiguous in the novel and very emotionally immature.

There's meant to be some sort of soul connection between the characters they play, but aside from all of Hugo's character being "bad", the was no real similarities between the other actors characters. (Ie some of tom hanks characters are bad and other good)
Also the whole thing was supposed to be a pay-it-forward message with the lawyer helping the salve having a butterfly effect, but it didn't work because, again, there wasn't a real connection between a lot of the time scenes.
Eg the gay musician just read the lawyers diary as a bit of a hobby, the lawyers actions didn't actually have any effect on him. Same with his music with Halle berry, she just listens to it and goes "oh that's nice". The fact that the movie takes it's name from this piece of music that has zero relevance to the supposed theme of the movie really highlights where the movie fell on its face.
