IV and V really came out of nowhere and haven't been matched by anything else since, I doubt I will see space opera of that quality again in my lifetime. I am hesitant to give them 10/10 only because they are kids' movies and it would be banal to take it too seriously like Alec Guinness said. However we would be deluding ourselves by giving movies so pivotal less than 9/10.
The Force Awakens was a good effort to revive the franchise, however it suffered from J. J. Abram's characteristic poor writing and "off the shelf" style kino. I wouldn't consider it 8/10, it is not a shade away from what I would consider 9/10.

Jabba's Palace takes way too long and the rubber aliens look like shit. We didn't need to see the droids get captured, then Leia gets captured, and then Luke gets captured, all separately. We didn't need to spend 40 minutes on fucking Jabba's palace when it's inconsequential to the main plot of the movie

in the original film, in the very early stages of writing the script, George was thinking about having a battle with the wookies against the Empire, but it never made it in. He re-purposed the same basic idea for RotJ but in no point in production were they ever planning to have wookies.
