90's kid. Blockbuster wasn't as great as your nostalgia filter makes it seem. They were usually dirty and were out of the movies you wanted. Honestly there's nothing better about Blockbuster compared to streaming.

>>
>>70407604
You probably lived in some dirty podunk. All the Blockbusters near me wear clean and well stocked.
>>
Can you imagine Blockbuster today if it was presented as a new idea?

You have to drive there, there's a good chance they won't have what you're looking for, and you have to personally RETURN the stupid movie, forcing you to drive back there again.

Blockbuster was a stepping stone to better ways to acquire media.
>>
>>70407604

I lived in the suburbs. It's not like they cleaned the VHS/DVD cases ever or anything like that.

Oh and I forgot to mention the chance that what you rent would have a chance to be scratched and unwatchable.

Why do so many persons here don't know what a "millennial" is, yet do not abstain from using the term anyway?

They need a term that means "kids these days" so they can insult them, but have seized on a word that actually means their own generation, so they end up insulting themselves like retards.

Millennials have gotten so bad they don't even understand collecting physical media anymore, or even owning physical media in the first place. They think it's a waste of time to wait a mere 20 seconds to watch a movie or tv show by having to insert the disc into a player. They're so impatient. Anytime they have to wait more than 2 seconds for something they get anxious and complacent, and they feel completely lost without the internet as if the whole world suddenly became empty. It's pretty pathetic. The earlier millennials like myself still understand those things though.
>>
>>70409160
Why would you stop visiting a website after reaching a certain age?
Also please leave underage.
>>
>>70409281

I feel as though I need to clear some things up about why Blockbuster Video is closing, and why they went chapter 11 in the first place a few years ago

>Blockbuster Video used to be owned by a Jew owned company named Viacom
>Viacom are money-grubbing whores
>Viacom buys all of blockbuster's rentals and merch with loans, instead of profits
>every year use profit to pay off loans, take out new loans to buy new merchandise
>blockbuster decides to split from viacom because they are tyrants
>viacom takes all of blockbuster's profits from that year, but does not pay off the loans
>the loans were taken out under blockbuster's name, not viacom's, so the loans technically belong to blockbuster
>viacom does not tell this to blockbuster corporate
>when blockbuster finds out, there is already a shit ton of interest, and viacom has all of their profits
>desperately try every quarter to pay off loans
>1 mil loan becomes 3 mil then 5 mil, finally tens of millions of dollars are owed
>go chapter 11, file for bankruptcy
>Dish network buys Blockbuster Video, because they want to use the iconic Blockbuster Video logo to sell tv subscriptions, plus wants brick and mortar stores to sell tv subscriptions
>closes unprofitable stores that were still around after chapter 11 closings
>has 300 locations left
>all are profitable
>blockbuster is profitable as a whole again, especially in the North East
>fast forward 2 years to 2013
>Dish decides to go exclusively to streaming
>considers selling BBV
>no fewer than 3 companies are interested in buying
>but Dish wants to keep Blockbuster logo for streaming service, cant do that if they sell the company
>decide to liquidate stores, put 3000 people out of work, all over the rights to a logo
>tell employees they are being laid off AFTER telling the news networks

Blockbuster's problem was it was owned by two shitty fucking corporations.

And Porn!!! They carried porn. What you kiddies don't understand, this was truly a "family video". Friday night Dad would get a couple porno's in order to bang Mom. Mom would get a romcom. Kids would get a few children's movies, and sneak a horror film in there.

Why would have a red car when you could have a blue one?

I had one of those Hollywood Video/Game Crazy stores near me that had a whole corner dedicate to video games. Me and an old buddy would hang out in and around that place so much like fucking Jay and Silent Bob in Clerks. Those were the better times.

>mom remembers it as one of the worst job experiences she's ever had, only above the time she got fired from a bank because they thought she stole $50
>she didn't, and they found out later someone made a math error

Probably just her Blockbuster, but from what she said and the little I saw when I was there while she was working, some of the customers were just fucking awful. Rude, pushy, cutting in line then screaming at her when she said they had to get in line, then screaming at the manager because the manager agreed.

Plus Blockbuster was such a fucking easy place to rob shit. You could literally grab anything and just walk out the door. Easier if you walked into the bathroom with something, destroyed the box, and carried the game disc out. I remember there was even a website devoted entirely to teaching you how to shoplift Blockbusters.

Left 2 years before the whole Chapter 11 fiasco, so kinda dodged a bullet there.

No Friday night Blockbuster video and a Pizza at my house ever.

We went to the movies once every other YEAR.

We would go to Blockbuster every now and than but it was only to look around and shit bricks at over priced films and candy

blockbuster, 20/20 video, and hollywood video were my regular spots as a elementary & middle schooler.

i still remember when new movies would come out for rent at blockbuster and there'd be that wall with new cases for the movie, and yeah sometimes it was literally like fighting for that toy in jingle all the way. for some reason out of all the movies or games i rented from those places, i still remember when amelie first came out. something about that poster art was so alluring.

my local blockbuster was right next to an in n out as well so that was cool.

What the fuck is wrong with you people? Do you not know what "millennial" means? Do you not know that this is the equivalent of saying baby boomers wouldn't understand the Vietnam War and Bay of Pigs?
>>

You can't really browse though, as the amount of literal dogshit on any digital streaming service is simply staggering.
>>
Anybody else remember the based mom & pop video store that had knowledgeable employees and loose late fee rules? So much better than Blockbuster
>>
I don't understand because I didn't use Blockbuster.
I had a locally run video store.
>the guy who owned it literally built a racing seat cockpit he could play video games in while at work
>always recommended to me weird foreign and horror movies I would have never known about otherwise
when it closed down I tried Blockbuster but it was just too shitty.
Rentals were expensive, you hardly got any time to view what you get and the staff were all depressing losers who obviously didn't want to be there.
So I turned to piracy like everyone else.
>>
Is nostalgia for this place an American thing? I remember my family would always just buy the video tapes instead of going out one evening to rent them.

It's used to mean people college aged and younger. And also this is b8 worthy, millenials is "officially" defined as people born up to the 80's by literal whos and people with hot air for opinions. Tbh "millenials" sounds like "born around the millenium" a.k.a. 2000. They really need to come up with a better term and use another to define how people always technically correctly use the term "millenial".

Here's a counter argument you can't actually stop:

You merely have an attachment to outdated media, like cassette tapes or punch cards for computers. "Digital films" are stored on expansive and re-writable hard disk drives or solid state drives. The files are the same whether on a HDD or a Video Cassette or a DVD, etc. They are merely a storage container. You can't possibly be making the argument that owning a $.25 piece of plastic packaging for a $.9 disk has any value. If you are, then you are saying that the tacky and worthless packaging of a film is really what the 'physical media' you're talking about is, and not the format on which it's stored. Are you saying that a storage format that stores one singular copy of a film is better than one which stores many films?

You don't really have any cogent argument here other than nostalgia. At least people who buy expensive watches or cars can opine about the mechanics or construction. There is no elegance in a plastic container for a disc or video cassette, no purpose in their use, or value in their form.
>>
Never used blockbuster because the local video stores and competitors had better selection, and more obscure titles and imports, as well as none of the horror stories I always heard about blockbuster.

>>

>>
Renting video games was something the world truly needed. Shelling out £50 quid a pop is not on for something that takes a week to finish, and they had them in as soon as they came out. Console gaming is too dear these days.
