I don't think you're correct. I only started getting involved in the /got/ generals around the end of Season 2 and the start of 3, but I distinctly recall we had an autist here that kept spamming "Cleganebowl confirmed. Get hype!" Every fucking post and most people in these threads didn't know what he was babbling on about.
It's very similar to the autists we have now even, it became so common people started making images about how incomprehensible this poster was or how implausble the theory is, then eventually that culminated into some people making those crazy 420chan youtube videos and those spread to reddit and other places on the internet which is when I first remember it hitting the mainstream.
As far as the original theory goes it probably didn't originate on /got/, but I'm pretty sure it was forced here and attained meme status and mainstream awareness because of it.
I bet the Cleganebowl poster is proud of himself. He's been immortalized on the internet even if his theory turns out to be false, unlike the Maisiefag, Jonautist, Daario=Euron posters and so on who will only be remembered by the neckbeards that browse these threads.
