Just finished pic related. I mentioned earlier I hate these fucking boxsets but this story was actually really great. The acting was a bit cringeworthy at times butthe twist gave me a genuine "oh shit" moment.The only thing keeping me skeptical about the rest now is the fact River is going to be in it at some point. why? the story is not about the black people, they're just extras who appear in a couple of shots.
I can kind of see where Moffat is coming from, but in my opinion it just underlines the general problem I have with historic episodes in the new series. They don't want episodes set in the past to be actual viewpoints into the past, documenting how things actually worked back then, maybe even making the viewer learn a thing or two. Instead they are treated as just another setting that viewers are already overly familiar with, from BBC-period-dramas for example. They then put a monster of the week into it and instead of focusing on the setting any more they focus on the monster instead, resulting in all the history-episodes feeling very present-dayish. Compare historic episodes to alien-planet- or future-episodes where they actually explore things and work out how the culture works. Historic episodes almost always devolve into stuff like "hey, this is like one of my history books. look at all the people wearing silly hats. We are not amused XD" The only new series episode that actually takes history as a subject seriously is in my opinion the Human Nature two-parter.

There are many problems with direction and production, I think like lack of lighting, but I wouldn't pin it on Mark.
However it's one of those stories that annoy me because it tries to explain its premise and explaination fails to align into any kind of causality.
