I just listened to pic related. I really liked it, and I'm not really a fan of 10. Completely disagree with what some people on /who/ have been saying about it feeling "forced." It did feel like a good RTD era episode and the 10/Donna banter wasn't over the top or anything like that. The resolution was a bit lacking but the story itself was fun which I think is more important here as the introduction of the series. I kind of hope the next few stories are resolved more creatively but we'll see. I'd give it a 7/10

I remember a particularly silly one from The Ice Warriors where the Doctor enters the Ice Warrior base and an Ice Warrior threatens to kill him unless he identifies himself. That's the cliffhanger. I think this is more a problem in the late '70s and '80s when most serials seem like 90 minute movies broken into chunks. In the earlier years it felt more like each episode was its own story even though all the episodes in a serial were connected.

It is almost completely fucking ruined by a novice producer and the appalling director he hired to shoot it.

The show has managed to redefine itself every couple of years so idk if there's a "definitive season", but I want to say 8 just because I like it
8 does the whole "episodes are loosely connected by an arc" thing without being too subtle or too on the nose, it balances space adventures with earth drama and it has a great TARDIS team who clearly care for each other despite their sometimes glaring differences.

I thought 5 did all that a whole lot better.
I mean Amy's relationship with The Doctor is basically that of many adults, ie it was around when you were super young then went away for ages and now it's back and different. I think 5's arc has a much more satisfying ending and genuinely think it's the strongest pair of finales we've had. So few of RTDs manage to stick their landings.
Deep Breath is just so slow and it really fucks with the consistency of Clara because, as the audience surrogate/whatever, she has to be like "uh is he still The Doctor he's not young n hot?!" despite the fact of all modern companions she has the least reason to think this as she's met 2 of his other regenerations one of whom clearly looked physically way older. Or maybe it was just me that was really bugged by that.

Victory of the Daleks was mostly shit but it was a functional bit of house-keeping for the show. RTD's whole "this is the last of the daleks who ALSO somehow survived and are ALSO somehow stronger than ever but I will ALSO completely annihilate them this time so they NEVER come back (until next season)" thing was getting really annoying. Like it saved future writers from having to explain how the Daleks are still around again.

yeah, the rtd-Daleks post season 1 were really weird. Like, in the season 2 finale they felt really tacked on to an already very busy episode with the whole Torchwood, Cyberman and parallel-universe business going on. Which is ok, I guess, because it feels like the cult of skaro was quickly introduced in order to establish them as recurring baddies so that in the near future they can pick them back up. But then in their next episode they are totally decimated, as if the writers realized that a small group of individual Daleks is too hard to write for. Has Russel T. Just rewatched it and I have to say it's not as good as I remembered. Remember how Adric pretended to join the vampires because he had a plan to help Romana escape... but then the Doctor saved them all and it didn't matter. Wow, great writing.
I do think there are some cases where it's really good at implicitly conveying information. We know how fucked the crew is when K9 says he doesn't even understand this E-Space stuff because K9 seems to always know about stuff. We know how shitty this planet is when the people there assume, presumably because of the quality of their clothes, that the Doctor and Romana are lords. On modern Earth they just look like weirdos. Bidmead is a pretty good script editor.

Not sure if people here now hate all of that but it did become cool to shit on Moffat after awhile for some reason. I remember some of the 2013 threads were lame because they were just full of "everything Moffat writes is SHIT bring back RTD etc" You still occasionally see those types of people show up "Moffat hasn't written anything good since RTD" or stuff like that.
