I like how the cast has excellent chemistry on screen except Teal'C, who's always autisticly serious and overactting in every episode. It's funny how he writes a lot of episodes too, I imagine the crew hanging around and having a good time backstage, with Teal'C actor sitting in a van writing his own fan fic into the next episode

So I'm right that the show definitely jumped the shark after the Goauld were beaten by introducing an even more obvious atheistic masturbatory fantasy of villains in the ori?

I always thought the show should have ended after the goauld. Or maybe focused less on villainous aliens, and more on the effects of the stargate program on the world.

Like introducing stargate to the general public, that would cause quite a lot of interesting stories.

I tried Stargate the other day.

It was so bad. I tried hard guys, I tried.

I couldn't make it past S01E09 of SG-1. Too campy, too little explanation than "dude this tech is like magic lol but yeah I can work it and it never breaks down", I needed a little more technobabble.

That and the retcon of the movie alien being kind of like alien-worm symbiotes/parasites aliens (Guoald or w/e).

I tried guys. I'm sorry. I even like some other 90s camp, but this mid 90s SciFi stuff was just .... it just wasn't my thing.

I can mind even season one of Star Trek TNG but man I couldn't stomach s01 SG-1.

SGU was spacekino. It wasn't so concerned with WHAT happened as much as how the characters dealt with it. It is truly a shame that the franchise is essentially finished. The best we can hope for is that Emmerich's new ID4 movie bombs hard and MGM doesn't let him ruin almost 20 years of television.

>>
>>70409556
I 100% agree it was the writers' fault. It could have been done well but they fucked it up.

From a storytelling standpoint, I get that in order for it not to be wholly encapsulated on the characters on the ship (not a foregone conclusion IMO), they had to have SOMEthing since the whole point was they couldn't establish a wormhole either direction (either for supplies or to go the fuck home).

>They failed to go all-out and have some real consequences for fucking around in somebody else's body.
It was still a line that made no sense.

If you have a top double/triple secret agent why would you let them talk to their mother or even have a 'wife' and spill those secrets? Shit is beyond retarded. Where is the secrecy. The protection. With the level of security (read lack there of) around the star gate program that shit may as well be public knowledge.

At least SG1 and SGA maintained plausible deniability. Tho SGA walked the line hard with the shear number of people involved.

so after continuum, what the fuck happened to all the other goa'uld running around? im talking about them as a species. did the Jaffa lead hunts across the galaxy to kill every last one? did the Tau'ri sanction it?

we know that they were all evil because they had the genetic memories imprinted in on them by their broodmother, and in the cancled MMO they were going to have the goa'uld the players could play as just not have the imprinted memories so they could actually adapt like Ba'al could.

also, i wished that we learned more about the Goa'uld in the show, and had at least one example of one to act as a foil for them other than the Tokk'ra.

That's probably because everyone involved knew how important they were and what they worked on. It's also, to me, the same reason why no one who works in Area 51 ever talks. A lot of people were involved but because everyone knew if shit got out, everyone would be fucked. Multiple alternate realities endlessly confirmed it was a bad idea to ever talk.

But those scientist were given clearance, the shit in SGU was just terrible.

There are certain sound effects that I have always loved. From the photon torpedo launching on the original Star Trek series, to the Tardis takeoff and landing.

I love the sound of the SG-1 gate dial out and activation.
>>
>>70414120
I also liked the work Goldsmith was doing with the soundtrack in S5. He was sort of lazy after doing the main themes for the show then all of a sudden got really glorious again in S5 and through SGU.

But sucks immensely that we didn't get to see more of those Frankenstein's monster motherfuckers from Daedalus Variations and more Asgard.
>>
>>70414120
Stargate, like most sci-fi honestly, always gets better the more time they get. Though S4 of Atlantis felt a bit rushed by how quickly they defeated the replicators considering how much of an annoyance they were in three galaxies.
And I still maintain that the final seasons of SG1 were great but are shit on because the show got canceled and didn't have a chance to go where they wanted. Just imagine a season where the Ori were fighting the Replicators. Magic versus fucking robot.

>>
>>70414458
I don't think the overall quality went down but Mitchell was just such a lame character. Browder wasn't bad but the writers just had no clue what they were doing with the character, like they were purposefully trying to make him not fit in with the rest of the group but they still tried to keep the same team dynamic as before.
>>
Can someone explain Stargate for me? Wasn't Stargate that shitty Roland Emmerich film about a portal that sends people to Space Egypt or some shit? I hear tons of good things about this show but is it a sequel or does it just use a similar concept or...what?
>>
>>70403444
In the early concepts those fuckers were graceful and thin and cool and mysterious like the old school vampires. How they ended up as crappy boogeymen was unfortunate.

Makeup and prosthetics were shit too.
>>
>>70414721
What's there to explain. Big magic device sends people to another planet and action happens.

Some people watched the movie and went
''holy shit, that's such a good idea, we should make a TV show out of it''
>>
>>70414721

Stargate Sg1 begins a year after the movie ends. Same characters, different actors. Richard Dean Anderson plays Kurt Russel's character and Michael Shanks is James Spader.

Show takes basic lore of the show and expands it into a pretty deep universe. It's a little disappointing that Emmerich plans to retcon the show for his sequels.
>>
>>70403496

>>
>>70414721
SG1 is technically a continuation of the movie, but has a very different tone. Only two of the main characters from the movie are in the show and they're played by different actors. The show (and at least one of the two spinoffs) is far better than the movie IMO

I honestly feel like the team went back to their roots but in a bigger scale. Like, basically the way they had to fight had to be clever but the amount of bullshit thrown at them wasn't enough to be won by a shooting down enemies.

It's like they were playing guerilla warfare with ships and advance tech while still being outclassed by magic and gods. An actual step up from the Goauld imo. Even the religious parts were genius

America has maintained a cursory guard over the star gate ever since reports of what happened in the movie. Aliens invade, looking for slaves. America realizes that there are threats out there, but also potential for peaceful exploration, and decides to develop an investigatory team to seek out new technologies that they can steal from aliens, while also trying to figure out who the slave guys were.

It then jumps the shark with some buddihst mysticicism shoved in arbitrarily (hey guys, our athiest religion is so superior to their theist religion, because it's real!), and then jumps the shark a second time, when after killing fake religions everywhere, a new threat arrives that's also a super powered fake religion.

Honestly, stargate is good, but only if you ignore the larger focus on religion. If they had only just told the story of humanity xcoming their way through the galaxy, stealing and researching technology (which is a large part of it), the show would have been GOAT.
