Why is JAWS so scary?
What is it about the deep ocean and large aquatic creatures that just puts people on edge?
Anyone know?

>sharks are real
>shark attacks happen (though not often but when they do it freaks people out)|
>most of the world is covered by water
>some sharks break the rules and can go anywhere in any water (see bull sharks)
>you stand a somewhat decent chance of fighting back against an animal on land, you can literally die by staying still in the water alone and sinking let alone fighting hundreds of pounds of muscle and teeth
Basically its one of the few times man is outclassed by a animal and that doesn't sit well with our psyche

A multitude of things that trigger fear in the human brain
>Darkness
>Being submerged in an environment we are not built for.
>Slower movements, stifled hearing.
>Heat loss - cold water.
>EVERYTHING in the water is faster than you.
Basically this
>>70373825
I used to do tours on a glass bottom boat, the ocean is terrifying. You can't see under you, you have to concentrate on swimming and if you've ever been stranded in the ocean you know how little control you have and being powerless is the worst feeling. Plus being eaten isn't a quick death and the shark will probably just mangle your shit up and not even appreciate how you taste leaving you to drown
>>70374080
ocean is so fun tho
>>70373793
>tfw surfing, see a fin in the water about 20 yards away
>adrenalinerush.exe
>get my ass to shore as quickly as possible
>walk over to lifeguard, "uhh, are there ever any sharks here"
>"nah that was probably a dolphin man"
>"ah okay"
that shit was scary as fuck though
the fear of drowning out there is enough, and when you couple that with there being a predatory animal that can swim as fast as boats, it's just super scary
>>70373793
IMAGINE
it's yuge

Dolphins are nice, provided that you don't piss one off or they accidentally hit you with their tail and break your neck
Sharks and Orcas gather at popular spawning grounds for animals like seals and penguins. Sharks predate seals by millions of years, so how do they know to gather there?
They learned.
In light of this fact, it amazes me that people are surprised that shark attacks are on the rise. Recreational swimming has only been a thing for about a century, but they're already learning.

We know more about the surface of mars than our own oceans, since we have only charted 2% of it.
Imagine the sick shit living down there. You don't need to visit another planet find alien life.

>some sharks break the rules and can go anywhere in any water (see bull sharks)
Fucking this, bull sharks are the only species of shark I hope goes extinct.
I'm worried those fuckers are going to find their way into the Great Lakes given how far they've gotten up the Mississippi River.

I fucking love Richard Dreyfuss for his performance here.

I read the book first, and it only made the movie that much more. In the book it's strongly hinted that the sharkis somewhat sentient.

>>70373793
Have you ever seen a large dangerous shark IRL?
I have. Tide was going out water was as clear as crystal never seen the Gulf of Mexico like that before.
I was standing on a sand bar rather far out but the sandbar was large so the water was only 2-3 foot deep.
Ready to go back I turned around to swim across the channel between the sandbars and I saw a ten foot tiger shark just cruising down the channel.
THE FUCKING JAWS MUSIC STARTED PLAYING IN MY HEAD!
I waited about 30 minutes before finally swimming back and I swear I broke some Olympic records.
>>70375225
even when you eat shit surfing 6 foot waves, the survival instinct that kicks in is fucking insane when you're underwater, can't imagine what it was like seeing an actual shark
>>70373793
I have an idea:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrt27dZ7DOA
>>70375284
It really didn't help when I kicked the bottom while swimming over the second sandbar.
Didn't realize I was over it all I knew was I kicked something very hard that felt rough and every freaking shark show talks about shark skin being sandpaper like.
Was about to scream like a bitch when I put my hand down on the sandbar and realized the fucker wasn't chasing me.
>>70373793
Fear of the unknown and the fact that we don't see the shark for about 3/4 of the film. Your imagination scares you more than the actual shark.
It's because you care about the characters. Brody wants to be a good father and police chief. Hooper acknowledges his advantages through wealth, but isn't seeking fame or personal gain, just discovery. Quint knows he's the best man to do the job, and we want to see him deliver revenge.

Well they are marine biologists after all, not often you have an encounter with a whale like that.
Hell my heart was racing when I got to swim with a baby whale shark a few years back (granted said baby was 20 feet long).
Seeing these animals in person is like nothing else, even seeing 3 foot sharks in the wild on dives makes me sperg out.
>>70373793
Ignorance. People didnt know a lot about sharks and based thier entire knowledge of the species on the film. People are fucking stupid

Something about Quint that was overlooked for years by me was his financial stake in it all. Remember what he says at the town meeting with the chalkboard? He was in the same boat(heh) with the rest of them. He couldn't afford to fail.
>>70376185
Someone needs to convert that to white text on a black background like some other creepy pastas. I'm sure it's a good read but that thread format just isn't doing it for me.

>>70373793
The fact that the monster is a real thing and you can't see it coming. It attacks you when you're vulnerable and can't move quickly while it can and when you're most off your guard (having fun at the beach).
>>70373793
excited for this, dont get many big budget shark movies anymore
Anyone seen that made for TV movie The Beast? Like Jaws with a giant squid instead of a shark, shit acting, and over an hour of content that could've been cut while preserving the "integrity" of the movie.
>>70377098
I've seen it and read the book also by Benchley who wrote Jaws. Prime 90s cheese.
>>70374736
>man that sucks, but wow what a fucking cool way to go though huh?
Nobody would say that. What the hell? The general reaction would
>Oh my fucking god that is horrible
>>70374592
Holy shit! That's scary as hell; consideringall sharks are sentient, dumbass.
The reason is in the image you posted, OP.
You can't see what comes from beneath you. Water slow us down, we can't move properly while on water. The environment is real. It's not another planet or deep in the woods. It's a beach, the ocean, places we are familiar with and frequent. The monster is real. It's an animal we can encounter anytime we're floating in the ocean.
It's real, primal fear from a real predator and the unseen.
>>70373825
This.
Humans are practically helpless in the water where as on land you can run and defend yourself and use any tools that happen to be lying around.
Almost impossible to defend yourself in the ocean unless you happen to bring a weapon with you.
And speaking of sharks, can someone post the trailer to the new shark movie with the blonde surfer girl who is trapped on a rock with a great white stalking her?
>>70377333
so you'd rather die in a car crash than a shark attack?
really?
i'd rather go out like howard hughes than to die of cancer or something
>>70377654
The girl is Blake Lively. Now you can find the name of the movie looking her up.
>>70373793
oceans deep and you cant see if there's sharks in it, fear of the unknown
>>70377656
Kidney failure beats cancer?
On what terms are you judging this?

>>70373793
Its music theme was great and helped created the tension too
>>70374264

>>70374312
>Recreational swimming has only been a thing for about a century
not true
>>70373793
My biggest fear of all time is the plot of that movie open water.
If I ever fell off a cruise or something I'd probably an hero as quickly as possible.
>>70380106
For ocean swimming, it's totally true. Only with the advent of modern travel did we begin to see a mass gathering of beach-goers in the summer.
>>70376333
nomnomnom
Just the opening is effective.
The rest is meh.
>>70380267
No, because that's what you're scared of doing: dying. You're too whatever to do it yourself.
The thought upsets you because it would put you in a position of doing it and you fear it the most.
You wouldn't do it quickly because you are not brave.
We can't see or move in water very effectively. Something just comes and bites you in the leg and pulls you under the surface
JAWS wasn't that scary
It was a great movie and the acting was impeccable but it was far from being a horror
I find the ocean itself more terrifying than anything lurking in it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otGbxp3m01I
Watch The Blue Planet documentary series if you faggots think fucking Jaws represents how scary the ocean is.
