That's not even what I had an issue with, the ending was in the book was Watney totally helpless, the Hermes crew having no support from Earth due to communications delays, and having to band together by doing what they do best. You got to see the crew basically do what Watney did the whole movie and improvise out the ass to get their buddy back home.
It was literally a perfect ending.
Instead we got the Captain booting the EVA specialist from doing his fucking job and Watney going full Iron Man when they said he would have no way to control himself. It was a stupid ending.

So because it could constantly accelerate, the calculations required for the parnell maneuver were several orders of magnitude more complex/precise than a standard slingshot.

There is a balance and it's hard to hit. And the book was aimed more towards actual nerds while the movie was aimed at the I Fucking Love Science crowd so the tone will be a bit different.

My thinking was that the ending in the book was very similar to the one in the movie Red Planet -- Carrie-Anne Moss EVAs into the capsule and retrieves Val Kilmer -- and they wanted something different. The Martian is still the best cast movie I've seen to date; all of the actors fit their roles believably. It's one of the best movies of late.
I agree with the other poster that Interstellar is one of the best in the last 10 years tho. I loved everything about it, even the bit about love.
