Can you guys explain to me what you like about this show? I watched the first two episodes of the first season and I don't get it. The performances as a whole were decent and the production quality was high, but other than that I'm not seeing the appeal. I watched two more episodes of this season and it just seems like a kitchen-sink drama cloaked as a fantasy epic of sorts, and I know some people like the show because it's allegedly edgy with incest and rape scenes.
I'm really curious, what is it about this show that makes it so good in your opinions?

Honestly it's much more than that but it's hard to describe, especially without spoiling anything. Season 1/Book 1 is kind of different compared to the rest because it's sort of a set up for the events that follow. But if you keep watching you may really well like it.
And if not then, I guess it isn't for everyone.That being said, the books are much better, if you have to choose go for them.

This is one of the best scenes in the entire series. The cinematography is fantastic, there's a bit of light symbolism that's handled elegantly, the lighting really adds to the scene, and the Iron Throne looks as real as it ever has.
Charles Dance commands attention, as he always does in this show. The initial tone is one of tension, as Joffrey tries to give Tywin a command. Joff and Tywin were the two main bad guys up until this point, and they hadn't directly interacted yet, so there was an air of mystery concerning the dynamic between their characters.
When Joffrey gives him a command, there's a sort of "he actually did it, the absolute madman" feeling, because it's Tywin fucking Lannister he's trying to order around. The tension builds as Tywin slowly climbs the stairs, a small smirk on his face, until he's towering over Joffrey. Joff is clearly scared shitless, as he's just run into the one person in Westeros who is not even close to putting up with his shit.
Seeing the scene go from pic related, to big bad Joffrey cowering in his chair under the scowl of Tywin Lannister was one of the highest points in this show's history, and I was almost fucking cheering out loud by the end of it.
Stannis was found and nursed back to health by the mountain clans and will lead them into the battle of the bastards on Jon's side.

Honestly, all fantasy books that aren't LotR/ASOIAF are trash. The only exception I've found are the Conan books by Robert E Howard.
Be warned, those fucking things will teach you a new definition of the word 'pulp'. I picked up the complete Conan anthology because it had the same cover style as the Necronomicon/Eldritch Tales Lovecraft collections I have.
