The basic complaints of the film apply, but I'm positive that you could cut a proper no bullshit revenge film out of it.

Don't mind me, I'm fairly new to film, so while I do believe I sort of know what's good and what's not, I've yet to see so much. I say this because the exclusion of names like Tarkovsky or Fellini are not because I prefer others, but because I've yet to see them.

I liked the movie, but its not written or acted as well as Prisoners. The symbolism in that one is a little bit more obvious and cheesy, it almost feels like filler. But the movie is really good overall.

>Magical, astounding filmaking. This could've turned out terribly, oh so terribly, but it didn't. It sure didn't. It's a near-perfect experience and adaptation, delicately told right from the opening exposition dump that haunts the very marrow of my bones.

That's too bad. I'm not the biggest fan of his older stuff, but it's his last three films that have me hooked. Try giving them another watch. I liked There Will Be Blood right away, but both The Master and Inherent Vice were films that I adamantly dislike the first go around, but now absolutely love
>>70275520
Interesting, I disagree with you about the acting for sure, maybe the writing as well. I also found it much nicer to look at.

Your screencap is a perfect example of why I find Mann aesthetically repulsive. His shit composition, his editing, his direction of actors, all give off a vibe of perpetual "offness". If you had to say Mann has any style at all, it's a kind of uncanny valley of filmmaking. Whenever I rewatch parts of his films, it feels as if someone made a movie and purposely tried to hit all the wrong notes.

I find it difficult to describe but that's probably due to Mann's inherent emptiness. Heat, Miami Vice, Public Enemies, Blackhat, etc. are like something that hollowed out actual films and is wearing their skin.

I go to a local restaurant here in town because he loved to eat there whenever he was in Santa Clarita. It's badly written but I didn't know how to put how important Griffith is to movies. He's not given the credit he deserves because one half of one movies is racist. He, along with other pioneering directors for sure, created the language of film we have today and The Birth of a Nation put all these techniques together in one film and put it in front of a wide audience for the first time. The Birth of a Nation, Intolerence, Way Down East, Broken Blossom, are all amazing.

"half of one movie is racist"
Yeah, thats not it, the whole movie is racist and the reason often ignore Griffith is because classic cinema has aged like shit and the only watchable things made back in those days are the russians and some yrupeans and asia, nothing worth was ever made in america till diary cinema

You're right, I haven't and there are many other films I haven't seen, either. Even if he was influenced by it, it doesn't have any bearing on whether he has a powerful aesthetic or not. If Giovanni Pastrone is as great as Griffith, that's great. Influence doesn't diminish an achievement.

Eseinstein idea of editing was the opposite of Grifiths and Vertov was against the romantic idea of cinema, read his kinocs texts and you'll see
>>
>>70286450
You're a moron. So Wagner isn't an innovative composer because he didn't invent the idea of opera? Look at the pre-1915 work of Griffith and Bitzer. They were creating the techniques that others would use years before they made Birth of a Nation. Even if they weren't inventing those techniques, which they were, they put them all together to create the long form narrative movie that is now standard. That's a huge deal that only became standard after Birth of a Nation. Those Soviet directors that you brought up were heavily influenced by Griffith, just read interviews by them.

He liked film as a way to represent the people; not for actors to dress up elegantly. Similar to how Dryer's Joan of Arc wore no make up.

Representing the people wasn't a romantic notion at the time. Vortov and Dreyer were considered anti-romantic for merely doing bizzare film structures and having no makeup. The kind of stuff we take for granted. Most films at the time weren't really different from a stage play and they shaped that up.

I'm not shitting on Vertov's accomplishments as an artist, I'm pointing out the intellectual dishonesty of pretending like you can point a camera at something and document an authentic, "real life" experience removed from the world created in a fictional film. Which is part of the beef I have with cinema verite, documentary-style filmmaking. Dreyer can shoot Joan of Arc with no makeup but there's still ideology attached. Doubly so with "documentaries". Something like 13 Hours is a couple of orders of magnitude more honest about its intentions than Man With A Movie Camera or Obama's America or Bowling For Columbine or The Farm: Angola, USA, or literally any film that self-identifies as a "documentary".

Of course Griffith was an influence on the Soviets you great bloody idiots. Art does not occur in a vacuum. You can say just as well that every significant film has influenced every film made since its creation. It's particularly insipid to cite influences in cinema during its period of infancy when you have such a small chain to follow back. Like a group of kids painting a picture together based off of the same photograph.
>>
>>70291330
You're a fucking retard. He's not like the guy who first banged a rhythm on a rock, he's the guy to first write a symphony. That's what we're giving him credit for. Of course artist influence each other and his influence is pretty damn big. That's the point. That's what he deserves credit for. His films are not historical relics, his techniques are still used today. Plus, his movies are good.

>Yang doesn't get enough credit for the incredible depth in his films, for me no one realizes the truth of what you are experiencing and can experience in real life like he could almost the perfect quality of an artist. And not just the entirety of one life but many lives he to is my favorite I think about The Terrorizers maybe every day Idk if its just me but the film seems to be the only one of its kind in that it discovers the connection between separate lives in a way that has living impact but the term Terrorizers and how Yang used source materials from real life hostage situation some involving terrorist, without it being "The" Post Modern Film there is something very erie and perhaps true about how we perceive other lives not anything sinister maybe cerebral. I find this in all of his films really but especially The Terrorizers and A Brighter Summer Day.

what did he mean by this
