you're an idiot and you have shit taste
De Palma talks like a problem solver of directing, not someone interested in great thematic density as so Jackieray writes about him to justify his love.
That isn’t to say there is a political consciousness—De Palma talks very frank about the ideas of Casualties of War for example—but he describes things in their surfaces values, whether it’s the body of a woman, the texture of blood, or the delights of a Steadicam movement.
Jackieray too often imparts his own values onto a director's psychology, and De Palma remains emphatically someone interested less in the script than in the values of a surface, the pleasures created while watching

I think that circuses are morally repugnant, especially when its intended audience is supposed to somehow be "better" than the subject matter. I can see what Korine is gunning for and I think his approach is disgusting. I seldom agree with Mike D'Angelo but his capsule was spot-on (and legitimized much of what I felt). it's available here: https://www.panix.com/~dangelo/col22.html#gumm.html
but hey, a lot of people seem to adore it. I had the same experience with Kids so maybe (early) Korine just isn't for me.

I don't really get the hype for The Searchers other than that its historically significant. I might change my mind if I watch it again in the future, but other than John Wayne's character and the cinematography, I wasn't very interested in it. But I've never been a huge fan of any western made in before the 90s, which is a shame on my part. I just can't seem to get into those movies.
I'm also a Tarantino fan, which is a hit/miss for people. I understand the complaints people have, but I love his stuff regardless.

I've put The Wild Bunch and The Good the Bad and the Ugly on my watchlist, and I'm mainly looking for all the classics. I have no desire to see anything that doesn't mildly interest me, and the plots to most westerns sound generic and I don't want to bother with them.
>>70259403
Okay, where are the arguments?
Also, here's a defense for me mostly enjoying westerns from the 90s and on. Westerns are like the capeshit of the 1900s, and for a long period they just kept shitting out the same stuff year after year. Not all of them were crap, but the whole genre feels suffocating that when you look up what a particular movie is about, it just sounds like a typical western movie, and that quite frankly sounds as boring as sitting through Marvel movies over and over. It wasn't really until the 90s when they started make post-western film era westerns, and they seem to use the archetypes and cliches to their advantage and creating vastly superior movies.
The Wild Bunch is fucking shit. Peckinpah was trash in general
I vote for evolution rex as worst user currently on /lbg/

no.
>>70271095
I'll watch it and see for myself. The director interests me because I saw that sort of shit remake of Straw Dogs, and I wanted to see the original.
>>70271095
disagree but Peckinpah was really conflicted about his violence during that period.
>>70271142
You didn't like it? Why? I thought it had good cinematography.

I've been the worst user on /lbg/ for quite some time lad, no need to vote.

No. You're wrong, and to present this kind of shit 'arguments' only proves immense stupidity. You don't show any signs of being able to handle films, you should try other activities.

>>70272426
Prisoners was so fucking shit.
Fuck you faggots for recommending it.
>>70272612
This. I think it pissed me off not because it was terrible, but because it was so hyped yet soooo bland and empty

bad acting and bad plot with muh twist

>A transcendent and moving experience, Interstellar is the finest film ever made.
silentdawn pls go
>>70273029
The acting is shaky (Jake and Paul are pretty good though), it's visually bland, we're given no set up or reason to care about this family, it's shallow - is it really bringing up thought provoking questions or approaching the topic in an original way? - the pacing is sluggish, it's made to elicit feelings of disturbance or fear from the audience but failed to do so; any seasoned movie goer saw through it and realized much of it was nothing but shock value.
So there, there are some personal reasons why I didn't care for it, such as the film's ineffectiveness, as well as some more objective points, such as pacing and blandness
Prisoners is hollow as shit posturing. Just like any other Villeneuve film
>>70273091
Huh? I think he/she/it/attack helicopter writes good reviews when he/she/it/attack helicopter isn't 1. Busy getting offended 2. Writing about trans shit.
>>70273212
I disagree with everything you said except for the shallow part, but a shallow movie doesn't equal bad. But the prisoner motif, the mazes, and the snakes gives it some ambiguity to its themes, which I'd say makes it a little bit of an original take.

>>70273365
>writes good reviews when he isn't 1. Busy getting offended 2. Writing about trans shit.
so literally never
>>70273392
I did say above, it's not that it's bad, or it's at least not incompetent (because I do consider a lack of good to be bad), but it was so hyped up, yet not only was it shallow, but it was pretending to be something deeper, as you say with the snakes and such, which pisses me off. I'm fine with a straightforward story, but don't convolute it with meaningless additions to make it seem more, because that's insulting.
There were so many moments of *CUE THE SAD MUSIC AND HAVE A CHARACTER SEEM REALLY SAD. WE'LL GET THAT ACROSS WITH YELLING. There was no nuance to the films or the acting. So while it was competently made (although I'd argue pacing was indeed a flaw), and my personal irks with it's shallowness aside, it failed not only to be original, but meaningful as well.
>>70273630
I keep bumping into them, too bad that attack helicopter lurks these threads and has me muted/banned so I can't follow other than what I randomly see in film pages.
>>70273796
jesus why would you want to follow? what the fuck is wrong with lbg today?
>>70273796
That shit of so many people here muted/banned is crazy. I don't think that the freak itself is here, but orbiters whiteknighting and witchhunting.

surelly not this one, then.
>>70273392
I realize my points here >>70273741 may seem jumbled, but I promise I'm not memeing. Allow me to try to articulate better.
You're right, shallowness and straightforwardness are by no means inherently bad. But Prisoners pretended to be more than it was, causing it to drag and feel bloated. Rather than use nuance to really affect the viewer, it not-so-subtly threw in mazes and scenes of emotional distress. Yet these seem unconvincing when neither the acting nor the story proves strong enough to pull the viewer in and get them invested.
>>70273902
Because that shitbag writes well when he aint too busy being offended?

>It pretended to be something deep and meaningful
I've never understood that argument about any movie. A movie can fail to be clever, but I don't really get how a movie can pretend to be more meaningful than it is. It merely 'is.' It seems like you guys just want to use the word pretentious, but know its a buzzword so you just reworded it.
>>70274237
>but I don't really get how a movie can pretend to be more meaningful than it is. It merely 'is.'
When it pretends. Like Sicario pretends that the fact about America born drug trade is HUGE REVEAL OMIGOD and everyone should be shocked or someshit.
or when they use symbols for the sake of symbols with very hollow ties to narrative and story (Prisoners)
>>70274237
Ok fine. I'm trying to say it poses as a movie meant to make you question morals, meant to be analyzed for symbolic meaning etc, but is a simple, ill-set up, story.
But perhaps you're right, it doesn't pretend to be that, it sincerely tries to be. If that's the case, then it failed in my eyes, explaining why it's not a movie I cared for. Besides my complaint of its intent, there's plenty, from the pacing to the script, that lead me to see it as unsuccessful in eliciting a response from me or from being a entirely well made film

>Thinks that's from H8

>>70274354
This is exactly what I meant by pretending. The snakes and the mazes, they exist not to truly add anything, but for the sake of the appearance of depth. So, were the film sincere, I'd still see it as a failure, as I said above, but I believe that it wasn't sincere, it through things in for their own sake, with empty symbolism and disjointed emotions included for no other reason than in hopes it could convince viewers it was worth something. And to many people it did. But to me, it's offensive to think I could fall for something so empty
>>70274581

lol I wasn't the the anon you asked, but I couldn't resist the opportunity.
>>70274354
>>70274449
I can kind of see that point of view, but the way I took it was that it was a nice and moody noir, with little hints of symbolism that you can catch upon rewatches. They're tiny things that elevate a straightforward movie, not something that's attempting to be deep.
>>70275019
Malick's my favorite director overall, well, Tree of Life onwards Malick

Fair enough, what are your thoughts on The Revenant? I found this to be another case of a straightforward story bogged down by needless things such as the floating wife visions etc. in an attempt to seem deep. However, The Revenant, I found, had a strong enough base story as well as fantastic cinematography and acting, that I was more willing to overlook Inarritu's pretensions
