I havent watched much animation besides mainstream and want to try something new.
I liked ghost in the shell, but it doesnt have to be like that.

Ralph Bakshi is great for something different. He's a Jewish guy who grew up in a black part of New York so he's very down with it culturally, really knows what it's like at the bottom. Some of his best movies are
>Heavy Traffic
Kind of about himself a little bit, about a young jewish-italian cartoonist living in New York who runs into some weird people and has some crazy shit happen in his life for a while. This one's very rough and cartoony but its rawness is still shocking and funny even now. The performances from the actors are absolutely great and the style is really unique.
>American Pop
American popular music culture from the early 20th century up the start of the 80s following the sons of a family of Russian-Jewish immigrants. This one's rotoscoped (traced over live-action footage). I really like the look of it, rotoscoping gives a lot of subtlety to the characters that you don't get out of most other animation and the story and style are pretty unique, especially among animated works. The music is cool, it looks really nice and different and it's probably the most mature story you'll ever get out of Bakshi.
>Coonskin
This is probably my favourite Bakshi movie. It's one wise old kooky southern negro telling an updated version of some old classic black American folklore to another guy to pass time during a prison-breakout. The story follows 'Brother Rabbit' in his rise to power as the criminal kingpin of Harlem, together with 'Brother Fox' and 'Brother Bear.' This one's got a lot of Bakshi's famous adult cartoon style to it which makes it loads of fun and unlike anything else you'll see. On top of being crude and funny it's also a surprisingly candid look at how shit some blacks have it in urban America. Definitely worth seeing.

This one's another urban cartoon but I think it isn't as charming as Coonskin or Heavy Traffic, still cool though. Rips into the hippies and such nicely.

Fucking hell that movie was depressing.
It's really nothing special, but I really fucking love Animaniacs: Wakko's Wish. It's a fun little movie with some great songs and some funny moments. Also some nice nods to the tv series in general.

Shrek is pretty good, don't really bother with the sequels.
The dispicable me films are also good, including the minions movie.
Chicken Run, Shawn the Sheep and the Wallace and Gromit films are good too.
