The Unsullied are great in formation fighting and maintaining good discipline. The tight-packed urban streets make it hard for such forces to maneuver for opponents who can attack from narrow alleys and use compact weapons that work well for single combat.

The one ambush they killed the great swordsman could have easily been handled if they had simply created a choke point by wedging themselves into a side tunnel (put a sea urchin into a toilet paper tube, try to fuck the toilet paper tube), or created a stalemate by having two lines, back to back, loosely spanning the main corridor, away from the side tunnels.
But no, they lacked tactical training, due to being mere shock troops deployed in open fields, so they did the ass backwards thing and creating an excessive surface area to defend by forming into a circle right in the middle of the corridor.

It's semi realistic. Not wuxia. Being a good fighter doesn't mean you're impervious to swords in the back. Numbers and surprise matte way more than skill in real life.
to be fair you don't get to rule over a massive amount of slaves who all have very good reasons to hate you without being good at fighting
