It might have my favorite characters, but the narrative is ALL fucked up. It has a horribly clunky and disjointed storyline. It's his worst directing job. It's also one of the world movies to pick to introduce someone who has never seen a Miyazaki film--they'll noticing the glaring problems, but they won't be primed to appreciate the charming Miyazakisms.

Oshii's interview about Ghibli is a bit odd, and he doesn't really say too much about Porco, just that he thinks Miyazaki put too much of himself into the protagonist. I like that Oshii recognizes how great Takahata's Anne of Green Gables adaption was, for a tv show the direction is top-tier.

Mononoke is my personal favorite I love all the ghibli films but they usually have dipping points where my interest kinda wavers with what's going on. Mononoke is the big exception even the slower more atmospheric parts of the movie are still extremely enthralling, I love movies like that where if feels like there isn't even a moment of wasted screen time.

>>
>>70211602
Add in Kaguya as a 3-way tie and this is my answer.
>>
>>70212292
Grave of the Fireflies felt so artificial, like it was focusing more into trying to "trick" me into caring about the kids instead of transporting me into the story.

Because of that I couldn't get too invested in it. So, eh, not that sad.

Ghibli is like Anderson.

I like all his films alot, some are better than others, but I like some more despite being "inferior":

My personal favorites, in both quality and rewatchability are:

Porco Rosso is right behind them, but its honestly lacking in general plot, or in grandness.

Nausicaa is the reason why Ghibli could be founded and is included in official Ghibli compilations home media. Lupin doesn't come close.

His characters are as believable and realistic as it can be in animation. I rewatched the girl who leapt through time after years and really was amazed how naturally characters behave after all that uniform plastic moe dolls spouting cliches that you see in your typical school series. Wolf Children had one of the best character development that i've ever seen not even in anime. Growing with my little brother and working abroad father i can say that it's painfully realistic depiction of struggling mother and her feelings.

It seemed like the protagonist was acting as stupid as possible, even when she had information that suggested she do otherwise, advice from her Aunt, and purposely tried not to fuck things up, to deliver a hackneyed message about growing up, responsibility, and taking chances in life without regret because "time waits for no one" (this is mentioned about six times for emphasis). That crap is even muddled by the third act with the dystopian future and the romantic sub plot that results in her waiting and pining for Chiaki for the foreseeable future, a high school crush. It was a terrible movie, but Hosoda didn't write that one.
>>
>>70218316

I loved it, but I feel it has a bit of a problem trying to figure out what it wants to be. Each individual scene in the film is GOAT but sadly the overall film leaves you wondering what the overall point was.

It took liberties with the facts, but still felt restricted by trying not to write some cinematic story arc for the sake of it, although I do respect that.

I don't have a problem with her general attitude, it's a very predictable but tried and true character arc, especially about time travel. It's just the depths of her actions felt forced, clearly designed to move the plot in a specific direction, and the pay off was completely unsatisfying. Not to mention she's completely unlikable while being a shallow character whose actions you can see coming from a mile away.

>It's too emotionally manipulative for my taste. And the kids died because of pride and stupidity

I agree. I had no emotional response to that movie, and I'm a wuss and cry easily. I was more angry at the stupidity than anything. Good looking movie other than that.
>>
>>70221660
I did feel sorry for the little kid, how couldn't you? None of it was her fault in any way.

i just saw Nausicaa of the valley of Mary Sue, it was shit. Please tell me the others are at least good
>>
>>70221840
Because she didn't feel real to me. I'm not saying cartoons can't get you emotional (I'm sure I've gotten emotional from cartoons before, just can't think of a time off the top of my head, at least not one that made me want to weep). But I never felt like those kids were real. I don't know. Maybe it's because I was rolling my eyes so much when they were at the aunt's house.

I have a house on a small Mediterranean island. Its close to pic related. Feels good to be a Yuropoor.

Yeah, Nausicaa is one of his worst movies, but as you can see, it's revered. It even has the worst score from Hiashi in his movies.

>>70224964
Why don't you show a picture from your house?

I actually really enjoyed When Marnie was there. The plot twists were nice and unexpected in a Ghibli movie.
>>
>>70224826
I felt the opposite. I thought they (especially her) behaved exactly like little kids do.

Castle in the Sky, but I haven't seen all of his others yet.

I didn't like how the movie spoiled in the very beginning that they were going to die.

I can recommend Song of the Sea if you want some Ghibli-like kino.
