They're both part of a long history of accessible, mainstream American sitcoms (more so The Big Bang Theory which follows the formula more closely). There's always been a market for it.
People watch them for comfort as an escape. "Corny" in this instance just means not particularly creative or fresh, I guess, but that's not what these shows are about. I guess TBBT has the whole nerd thing which was new at the time but the basic formula is that of a typical sitcom, and it doesn't deviate from that.

The Big Bang Theory is actually a pretty good sitcom if you can get over being angry about all the references the show drops. Sheldon is a well-written, well-acted character. In later seasons the writing gets much better than the "hey guys remember n64 and look at my alienware laptop" stuff most of you guys seemed to rage on about.
