I definitely respect Hammond more. He lives out in the country and doesn't give a fuck, unlike the other two who live in West London. He obviously likes to keep his own life. And he's got a family, kids, whereas May doesn't, he's only got a girlfriend.
I know you look at May and you think "he's like me! He's shy and retiring, yet he's got a successful career! Therefore I can still be successful!" That's why you like him. He's inoffensive. He is a genuinely nice bloke, that is absolutely true. But unfortunately when you get to the real world you realise that being a nice guy doesn't really get you anywhere. If you want to start a family (which is ultimately your purpose as a man) then you've got to have a bit of balls about you.
But yeah you see it on screen too. When it gets confrontational, May just has no balls, and he will sometimes just hide behind Clarkson (figuratively of course). Hammond just does his own thing and doesn't give a fuck. May resigns himself to being labelled "Captain Slow", he never shows any spunk, he never stands up for himself. Hammond actually stands on his own two feet.
