Because people have to want to work with you for you to get hired.
If you're good and you have the face, but you rubbed someone important wrong or was rude/difficult to work with, they'll hire someone else. The competition for the gig is insane, they don't just have back ups, they have a list of 10 understudies to take your spot.
Also, if you make a good connection, you could make your career.
