This is harmful to the film industry. It tells the general audience that film is objective rather than subjective. They just see a score. And that score doesn't mean what they think it means.
It's not reliable. A lot of the critics on there are not honest about reviewing a film as a film itself, instead they base their review on a predetermined bias from their personal taste. They could not like the director or a lead actor and just decide they won't like it. Then that stupid review is simplified into a fresh or rotten score. 50/50. The fuck is that? It's their job so they go to a movie they know they won't like but they go in anyways looking for details to bash on it, or vice versa. Their review is completely irrelevant.
Professional movie criticism is bullshit. If a trailer interests you, then go see the god damn movie. If it doesn't, then fuck off. Form your own god damn opinion instead of asking someone else to do it for you.
I've never heard anyone give a shit about r/t until I came on here.
Normies, as in the people who go to the theaters to watch whatever shit looks worthwhile don't really care

they present critical consensus as a binary because it triggers people like you and gets their web traffic up.
Every thread about this subject is an example of why they do it this way.

the same shit goes for any rating system, especially shit like yelp
chalk up the popularity to people being lazy
studios probably dont care because rottentomatoes gives them exposure and they hope to get a good rating anyways
obviously with movies like Jurassic World, the score often doesnt have a big impact compared to actual audience word of mouth
