What criteria do you use when rating films and why? Is any criteria absolutely 'correct?'

Hello team!

Hope you’ve got your flat shoes on, because our red carpet is a stiletto-free zone. Some people don’t even own a full pair of shoes, you know? Aaanyway, congratulations to Ken Loach on his Palme d’Or win for I, Daniel Blake. Check your Cannes-cred with this list of every Palme d’Or nominee since 1946 and get a few good ones in before blockbuster season hits us with its overblown, 180-minute mallet. Or perhaps just check out Shane Black’s latest noir action comedy for something with a little more kiss kiss, bang bang.

Happy watching,
The Letterboxd crew

i put INNOCENCE in my favorites because it's one of my favorite films

but for a response that's not a tautology, i find it incredibly fascinating. it's more well-rounded than its predecessor, effectively fleshing out its characters and the world they live in. i was really taken in by its visuals, too - the contrast between the 3D environments and 2D character models really emphasizes the depersonalization i imagine would be experienced in such a future.

Everyone's a little bit unsatisfied
Everyone goes 'round a little empty inside
Take a breath, look around
Swallow your pride for now

Nothing lasts, life goes on
Full of surprises
You'll be faced with problems
Of all shapes and sizes

You're going to have to make
A few compromises for now

But only for now
Only for now
Only for now
Only for now

For now we're healthy
For now we're employed
For now we're happy
If not overjoyed

And we'll accept the things
We cannot avoid, for now, for now
For now, for now

But only for now
Only for now
Only for now
Only for now

Only for now
For now there's life
Only for now
For now there's love
Only for now
For now there's work
For now there's happiness

But only for now
For now discomfort
But only for now
But now there's friendship
Only for now
For now
Only for now

Only for now
SEX
Is only for now
YOUR HAIR
Is only for now
CLINTON
Is only for now

Don't stress, relax
Let life roll off your backs
Except for death and paying taxes
Everything in life is only for now

Each time you smile
It'll only last a while
Life may be scary
But it's only temporary

Everything in life is only for now

Do any of you feel like you can't enjoy straight up comedy films anymore?

I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a film that had the outright intention of trying to make me laugh. I don't even know if that's just my brand of humour being unavailable in entertainment... or I'm a miserable pile of garbage not worthy of polishing Will Ferrell's boots.

Its hard saying it without coming across as an elitist, but I'd say my humor has just 'advanced' over the years, and its harder and harder to make me laugh and the things that do make me laugh are so abstract its hard to explain the joke. So, yeah, I can relate.

Its also worth noting that most comedies pander to the teenage crowd and has humor no better than a family guy episode.

I'd suggest watching them with friends.

>>70104998
I get this. I find humour in some of the most depressing stuff in film now, things that as an adult feels real and not a distant possibility. Four Lions is the only film I've seen this year that I laughed at, and even that was pretty dark. Watching with friends does make it a lot easier as most films seem to become retarded that way.

Anything where it's not an absolute technical nightmare is automatically 2 stars or above, unless I HATE the movie despite the fact that the camera is pointed at the actors most of the time.
From there it's pretty much anything goes, as long as the movie is good in whatever way.

>>70092999
Exactly

I LOVE Mars Attacks, for example, but it really isn't all that great all things considered

Makes it hard to think of an exact star rating at the end of the movie if I have to weigh just enjoying it and how good I actually thought it was differently, but I think that's the way to go.

Robert LePage
Denys Arcand
Denis Villeneuve

Who else?

Claude Jutra
Michel Brault
Pierre Perrault

Jean-Marc Vallee or whoever the guy who directed C.R.A.Z.Y.

They make a lot of popular crap, too.

Check out Jacques Rozier's stuff; more precisely: "Du côté d'Orouët", "Les naufragés de l'île de la Tortue" and "Maine-Océan".

Also, there's an Elaine May movie called 'Mikey and Nicky' which is very similar to the stuff Cassavetes made in the early seventies.

You might also be interested by other filmmarkers who, at some point, used improvisation quite a bit (in different ways): Pialat (already recommended by another poster, "À nos amours"), Rohmer ("Le rayon vert", "L'ami de mon amie") and Rivette ("Out 1").
