Dead Man's Letters because of Stalker. Would also rec all of Tark's other stuff.
All other Tarr (particularly Satantango and Damnation) because of Werckmeister (my favourite film)
Fanny and Alexander if you haven't already seen it. Winter Light is also amazing.
Lessons of Darkness. Fantastic poetic documentary from Herzog.
Any and all Kurosawa (Ran is my fave).
Kobayahi's samurai stuff is also great, particularly Harakiri and Samurai Rebellion. Would also highly, highly rec the Human Condition and Kwaidan too.
Ordet if you haven't already seen.
Recently watched On the Silver Globe, which I would also highly rec. Kinda has a similar aesthetic to Stalker in a lot of ways, but it's definitely its own thing.

Thanks, though I've looked into the filographies of the directors on my chart so I've seen a lot of the stuff you haven't recommended. But I haven't seen Dead Man's Letter, Human Condition and Kwaidan.
I have seen On the Silver Globe and it's a real shame what state the film was in, I also felt like the directing and editing wasn't as creative in the second half when the astronaut arives. I was also bothered a bit by the dialogue, it felt a bit too unnatural to me even for the type of movie it was. I'm polish myself so I think actually understanding it and not having to read it made it kind of worse.
I couldn't answer some of yall questions yesterday cause I was sleeping, so sorry my men
Also I saw place beyond the pines yesterday, it was ok

I actually wasn't too bothered by the state the film was in, though obviously I'd prefer it to be finished. Thought the sections with Zulawski just walking around and narrating were pretty fitting with the rest of the film.
I agree about the dialogue though, it's pretty ridiculous and that 20 minute section of pure rambling is a little hard to sit through. Enjoyed it more as an experience I guess.
Would you rec Zulawski's other stuff like Diabel and The Third Part of the Night? Been meaning to see them.
I guess I'd rec Z, Letter Never Sent, Feherlofia, Face of Another, and The Man Who Sleeps as some sleeper hits though. They don't really relate to the stuff you posted, but they're fantastic regardless.

I haven't seen any of his other films so I can't say but I've been planning to check them out. I'll try out the other films, especially since you've mentioned one of my favorite films among those - Feherlofia. I even have it on my non-jap animated 3x3 chart and it's easily my favorite of those.

I'm glad someone else shares these sentiments about On the Silver Globe. I honestly wasn't bothered by the cuts to narration, but many stylistic editing choices - such as the random electric guitar - and the very obtuse and yelled dialougue ultimately made it tough to si through, despite the unparalleled visuals

based on this post, Zulawski might not be your cup of tea
What's up guys, it's been a while. Since the topic seems to be Zulawski, I'll chime in. I've seen OtSG and Possession, the latter of which I definitely preferred. But despite being left in awe by their looks, from the camera work to the set design and lighting, something about them has caused me not to be a huge fan. I know both will require a rewatch, as I could tell many things went over my head the first time around, but even Possession, which I found easier to sit through than On the Silver Globe, had what I felt like where tonal or stylistic inconsistencies that bugged me. Like >>70097561 says, perhaps he's just not for me. I for sure plan to check out Diabel and The Third Part of the Night before determining my thoughts on Zulawski, but it certainly seems that while I have nothing but respect for his creativity and talent, his style just doesn't do it for me.
Newly updated, any recs?
