Personally I loved it for it's historical grit. For once a historical piece wasn't afraid to speak ancient/pre-medival languages through out the film. It's warm welcome from the constant Romans, Greeks, and Hebrews speaking English a faggy British accent.
Apparently it worked because Mel followed the style up with Apocolyptico.
