They have been padding out the story with flashbacks to build up to the reveal.

Why was Sansa so angry at Petyr? She knew that Boltons killed her brother right? It's not like he kept this a secret. All Ramsay did to her was, well you guessed it, consumate their marriage. Sure, he did some fucked up shit involving Reek, but she literally started messing things up since the day of her arrival (plotted to escape, got a piece of iron to potential hit Ramsay, called Ramsay a bastard, being a passive-aggressive cunt all the time).

I'm fairly sure the emotion dulling thing was exaggerated, or at least incorrect in Geralt's case.
I've come to terms with the books and the show being different, I just wish they had the foresight to realize this was going to happen sooner and started streamlining and making certain divergences at the beginning to make it a more internally consistent and quality story.
For example, one of the main reasons new seasons are shit isn't just because the writing feels like D&D don't give a shit anymore. It's because in the source material GRRM killed off his darlings, so a lot of based as fuck characters that were compelling to watch died as a result. So what his solution? He started introducing a ton of characters in the later novels to replace those characters and storylines that got killed off, but D&D reasonably decided "fuck that". Even characters and storyline thst have made it in like Euron and Dorne, they're deliberately dumbed down. The former is a major villain meant to fill in the power gap with Tywin's absence, the one on the show is cartoon villain they dont have to devote much time to. Dorne was similarly a tacked on filler story. Victarion was also a replacement for Drogo after GRRM realized how much he fucked up killing that character.
