It was an unfair mystery, one that kept prodding you to solve it even though it doesn't follow the rules that would allow you to do so. The detective being the culprit is one of the fundamental no nos of mysteries, you can break it sometimes, but honestly it's been done and wasn't done in a fresh way here. It just robs you of the ability to figure out what's going on along with the characters. Unless you go into thinking the writer was cheap enough to pull that move, which you should never have to assume in the first place.
