Let's say I saved up $10,000 and want to make a movie all by myself. I'm talking writing, composing, directing and the whole shebang, Shane Carruth style.
Is there a /tv/'s literature list of filmmaking? Or a decent video seminar or something?

Don't fucking do it OP

save your money so you can take early retirement insteed of spending on a random movie that no one will see
>>
What a waste of fucking time. You should take that money and just burn it instead.
>>
>>69981079
>early retirement with 10k
dude i'm not a poorfag. I just want to do this for fun.
>>
>>69980990
he looks like a fucking woman
>>
>>69981128

I say go for it.

If your goal is to put a vision you might have on film, then theres nothing stopping you.

Just don't expect praise, awards, or even for people to know what the hell the movie is unless you plan on dumping money into advertisement.

Good luck to you if you do decide to do it. Not many people ever have to strive to go out and make something happen. Theyd rather sit on 4chan all day and shitpost.
>>
>>69980990
can you even film anything else than a lost & found videocamera footage movie with just $10,000 ?
>>
Professional composer here, ill score your film breh (will post email if youre interested)

>wasting 10k on random movie for """FUN"""

if you want fun go play video games and lets be realistic your 10k movie is gonna be against a millions dollars of investments from the studios
>>
>>69981482
it's like only $10,000 and there's a lot of potential if the director is creative.
>>
>>69981482
10k isn't really a lot of money.
>>
>>69981270
Yeah man, of course. But honestly there's so much I need to take care of to make my movie not suck. Obviously I don't want to spend too much on a movie that will lose me money, so I can't hire people to do the technical stuff for me.
If I just jump right into it my movie will suck. It will have shit lighting, shit sound, shit colours and everything. I was hoping there are some people with experience on this board who read some books about filmmaking and could point out a few good ones.
I started reading The Filmmakers Handbook and How to Shoot a Feature Film for Under $10,000.

>>69981415
I reckon I could make a decent horror movie with that money. 70% of new releases in that genre are complete shit anyways, so if I do a good job I might even get some exposure lel

>>69981468
Only if >you do it for free
>>
>>69981689
you better hurry up though, summer's coming, that's the best time to release small budget movies.

you're shooting hdcam?
>>
do it
>>

That doesn't stop Neil Breen.

protip m8: three point lighting is boring

The Disaster Artist is a required reading desu

Practice first. Buy a GoPro and film a 5 minute short film. If it goes viral, then consider doing a 10k project. At 10k that money would go towards actors and lighting. You could rent the camera.

>Is there a /tv/'s literature list of filmmaking?
no. there is no real community on /tv/ besides memes and insulting each other.
that being said, for 10k you could totally make a good experimental film. Good student films have been made for much less. Even phones can record in HD now. The amount of resources and technology available today to make short films would've been a dream to great directors only half a century ago.
Get a good camcorder. Get a drone with a phone mount to capture hd aerial shots. no need to rent a helicopter. write a script. you probably wont be able to afford even beginning actors so get your friends to do it with you. they don't have to be good. torrent a good editing program and cut your masterpiece together. add a cool soundtrack.
congratulations, you're now a director. post your shitty movie on youtube or send it to film festivals.
you will have spent no more than a couple grand when all is said and done. whether it's good or bad depends mostly on your writing and editing skillz

I'm a long way from filming, let alone releasing my movie. I'd be happy if I'm done before 2018.

>>69981998
Oh well, thanks I guess.

>>69981898
I made this thread to not end up being the next Neil Breen.

>>69982018
The success of 5 minute viral films is due to their 'gimmick'. It doesn't really prove you're good at making films, just that you had a sweet idea for a 5 minute film.

>>69982180
Thanks m8. So then, how do I into elite editing skillz?
>>
>>69982279
>The success of 5 minute viral films is due to their 'gimmick'. It doesn't really prove you're good at making films, just that you had a sweet idea for a 5 minute film.

Make it a 20-30 minute film. That's short enough that it won't require a huge investment, but long enough that if it's not really good people will just stop watching, so if it's successful it will be because it's legitimately good.
>>
>>69982279
If he's not creative enough to put together a cheap "gimmick" then what makes you think he'd have the creativity to be successful for a full length film?
>>
>>69982402
It's just an unnecessary step. Might as well do a full length film. It's not my dream to make a successful 5 minute film. I'd rather waste the 10k than the additional time for a 5 minute movie I don't care about.
>>
>>69982279
>how do I into elite editing skillz?
there are tons of free video editing programs that do everything for you. it all depends on the style of your movie and the tone you want to set.
if you know literally nothing about video editing there are also tons of free e-books that will teach you all about lighting and zooming and jump cuts. after that you just apply your newfound knowledge to the type of film you're making.
>>
>>69981598
That's more than Primer was made for, and they had to pay for film. You can do a pretty awesome job for 10k right now, if the movie sucks it's going to be OP's fault not the budgets'.
>>
>>69982621
Dude. Either rent the professional camera or buy a gopro.
>>
your best bet would be an adaptation of a short story; i would pick something by poe, and keep it dramatic. expenses would go towards set/costume design, and other technical stuff. the actors would only get pay from whatever the movie earns. i'd release it on youtube.
>>
>>69982797
Don't buy a gopro. Buy a used canon DSLR that can do raw video with ML and some manual chinese lenses. You'll end up learning a lot more about cinematography that way.

I'm not bashing gopros but if you shoot the whole movie on one not only will you not learn anything, it is going to be pretty bland.

This, not even kidding. Just replace everything porn related with normal acting.

Great book.

I'm gonna give you a crash course on filmmaking OP.
