How come after all these years there's still not a single movie monster that could top The Thing in sheer terror and and repulsiveness?

I'd rather be locked up in a room with all Serial Killers and Urban Monsters that exist than to know The Thing actually exists.

it's that weird head monster, man

fucking odd as hell and twice as creepy
when this movie is shown on reg. TV, they cut this scene out

That character is named Palmer, and he neither shouts nor says that.

He is the first to see it and, barely above a mutter, stupified, says, "You gotta be fucking kidding..."

Watch the fucking movie.

Which raises the question: are things so devious they will sell out other things for their own cover, or do things even know they are things?

I've seen scarier movies but I swear to god I've never seen anything with better gore. It's not just the fact that it remains gross to this day, it's how creative it is in its nastiness. I showed it to my 15 y/o cousin and the scene when the dog's head splits in half and the part where the guys arms get taken off as he goes to use the defibrillator got genuine 'WHAT THE FUCK's out of him. Great stuff.
>>
Del Toro just blew a big load writing about the Thing on twitter
>>
>>69974165

You should maybe look up what Tyranids looked like before StarCraft.
>>
>>69972994
The thing about the Thing is that it's just terrifying in so many different ways.

Obviously, its really creepy and repulsive to look at. But it doesn't really have a "true form" either, so it never really loses its shock value. It always assumes some new horrifying appearance every time we see it.

Then there's the paranoia factor. You never know who is/isn't a thing. You yourself could be a thing and wouldn't know it until you start transforming, which is arguably the scariest aspect of the Thing.

Finally, there's the existential terror of just how effective the Thing is at assimilating everything. If it had landed pretty much anywhere but Antarctica, the entire Earth would have been fucked.

It was an ingenious choice to have the creature look different every time really.

The audience is never allowed to get accustomed to a certain look or beast so every time it reveals itself its ugly and unpleasant in a whole new way.

Also here is the obligatory post of the video no Thing Thread is complete without.

Survival is its first instinct, replication second, so yeah "Things" will absolutely sell each other out in a dangerous situation but will preferably work together.

There were some examples of this in both movies but the prequel comes to mind a little clearer since I saw it more recently. One confirmed thing accuses another thing of being a thing and tries to flame thrower it just to deflect attention away from itself lol.

Don't let yourself be memed by tv btw. The thing prequel is a solid movie and is autistic in detail in how it sets up the original thing and ends literally seconds before thing 1 begins (helicopter chase).
>>
>>69978623
The only good thing about 2011 The Thing was Winstead's cute butt
>>
>>69978623
I think the biggest issue people have is the shitty looking CG. The Thing looks far to clean and neat instead of something that tears apart it's innards and splatters it all over the place.

As an exmaple compare the Palmer transformation and head disconnection to that one scene where The Thing basically disconnects it's hands/arms, the "wound" from the disconnect look neat and clean as if it was already healed for at least several months or years.
>>
>>69978730
I liked the set of thul station because it matched the original film perfectly. The broken ice chamber, the random axe in the wall, dead guy in the comms room, Norwegian who couldn't speak english to warn the americans, thing's behavior, twinfaced thing, etc.

The only thing people here ever complain about is muh cgi!!!! but even then it's solid in that film and at least the DESIGNS are faithful to the original.
>>
>>69978803
I wouldn't even call the cg shitty because it looks no better or worse than cg in other films. I judge films compared to other films released in a similar timeframe. Cg is the current standard for sfx so going by that metric it's fine imo.
>>
>>69978803
>>69979080

Movie was full of practical effects. Watch the making of. Videos on YouTube show it off.

Producers hired another company to cover it all with CGI. Director and crew wanted to be faithful to the 82 film.

Look up "CG or not CG war crimes" on YouTube to listen to the makers of the practical effects talk about how their works were coveted up.

Boy I watched more anime than you know about movies.

Iczer One is the only OVA that managed to actually create mutations similar to The Thing but even then it was only transformation and it all lacked the terrifying nature of The Thing.
>>
>>69975280
There was enough terror of the unknown in the gantz desu.
>>
>>69972994
I think it's mostly because The Thing is not just a horror movie, it's also about an existential fear and paranoia.
What is a human? What are the persons around us? Do we really know what it is to be a human in our own flesh?
Carpenter, even though he probably wouldn't claim to be an intellectual about it, touched something in this film that can resonate beyond the genre of horror.
Most horror films don't really want to scare you or put the audience into an uneasy terrain...though that's exactly what they should do!
Horror is not entertainment for me, it's a serious exploration of human psyche and the monsters it tries to hide.

Structurally its a fairly boring film though. Outside of the fan service moments of setting up the stuff we had already seen in the 82 version its a fairly bog standard monster film.

It is certainly not the worst late in the game prequel/spinoff ever, not even close in fact, but it does lack anything outstanding like the excellent ensemble cast or memorable tense sequences (the 82 bloodtest sequence is a masterclass of creating tension within a scene)

But none of it ever reaches that level so overall it was still a disappointment for me.

Honestly being that we already know pretty much what happened to the Norwegians without it I would have preferred a proper sequel over a prequel

God only knows what nightmares would await us if the thing managed to reach the sea and cross it. Half the shit at the bottom of the ocean is already fucking terrifying tbqhfam

When the Thing could absorb the knowledge of its victims, can it learn compassion, sympathy & communication? For example, would it feel bad for inflict pain upon others when killing/assimilating them?

In the original short story you had a Priest that would in the night alone cry for god and pray for his help just to be alter found out that he was one of the first that were infected. I'm sure The Thing queues stuff like emotions and behavior from a database like clicking on a soundfile on the desktop and plays it.

Of course. When you said that, i remembered how perfect it was that one of the first lines in the whole movie is one from a crazy norwegian about to lose his mind because he needs to kill a dog.
It definitely sets the tone.

Also, everytime that first norwegian gets shot by...Garry i think? He just shakes a little as he dies, and after the first time you saw the film, you can't help but wonder if he shakes because he is a Thing.

What was the purpose of this form? I can understand the spider head would allow it to escape and sneak-assimilate someone down the line, and Palmer once transformed could maul someone.

What function does this thing serve?

I always figured that since it had assimilated so many different creatures from other planets or whatever, that it was just panicking and taking the shape of whichever one could help in that situation
