>“I wish someone had just told me the truth right up front, as soon as I was old enough to understand it. I wish someone had just said: “Here’s the deal, Wade. You’re something called a ‘human being.’ That’s a really smart kind of animal. Like every other animal on this planet, we’re descended from a single-celled organism that lived millions of years ago. This happened by a process called evolution, and you’ll learn more about it But trust me, that’s really how we all got here. There’s proof of it everywhere, buried in the rocks. That story you heard? About how we were all created by a super-powerful dude named God who lives up in the sky? Total bullshit. The whole God thing is actually an ancient fairy tale that people have been telling one another for thousands of years. We made it all up. Like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. “Oh, and by the way … there’s no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny. Also bullshit. Sorry, kid Deal with it.”

Nigga what. Who the fuck ever said that.

Also, as much as i enjoyed the dopamine rushes for getting the references, the book isn't anything remarkable by a great margin. And they won't even make a proper adaptation because licensing hell.

I don't see anything wrong with this personally, maybe the writing could be better but it does capture why the character thinks in a specific way. Haven't read this book, though.

>>
>>69923703
Yes. It's fanfiction tier. And not good fanfiction.

I don't know if you're a comics fan, but there's a Batman comic called "Hush". People tend to like it, it's very well thought of, but it's completely awful. It's as if the writers sat down at a table, wrote a list of all the major things you could possibly have happen in a Batman story (i.e. Batman fighting Superman, Batman being faced with mortality, Batman in love, encounters with every god damn villain he's ever fought) and then just had them occur in order, until they got to the end and realised there was no fucking plot to tie it all together and put in some minimal bullshit justification. It's a truly terrible feat of writing.

Ready Player One is the same thing with "nerd culture" references. And "nerd culture" fans love it for the same reason Batman fans love Hush; the majority of people are fucking plebs and all they want to see is cool shit they recognise.

Why and when did this guy achieve meme status?
I'm not American so I don't understand.
>>
>>69925467
He's also "one of the last defenders of true vidya"or some shit like that, but doesn't get mentioned ever again past 2 lines.

He's also the narrator of the audiobook.
>>
>>69925771
He was a lowly side character on Star Trek:TNG who was only noteworthy because the pathetic guy who was always getting told to shut up. He hasn't done much of anything noteworthy film or TV wise since than other than build up his meme status in the Star Trek fandom, make shitty youtube videos about tabletop games, and put out quirky and politically correct utterances on twitter
>>
>>69925771
TBBT made him a prominent character, but i don't know about him before the show.
>>
>>69925771
He's basically a male Felicia Day. He does nothing of substance and considers himself to be some kind of a "nerd culture" figurehead for no good reason.

I only learned about him when he failed miserably at hosting the last Blizzcon. Imagine that, fucking Blizzard fans who are basically a bunch of retarded casuals who play shit like Heroes of the Storm flamed the fuck out of this guy for being a phony who couldn't even be bothered to read a wikipedia article on Blizzard games before trying to pretend he actually plays videogames. I believe he took off from the event prematurely because he received some negative tweets.

He also produces inane Youtube SJW propaganda, watch at your own risk.

The guy is a disgrace to humanity.

>>

REAMDE isn't really about a video game at all, it's about people who work at an MMORPG company getting sucked into the midst of a KGB/Chinese mafia/Al Qaeda/Redneck Survivalist feud.

There's probably less than 10 pages of actual gameplay in the entire book compared to literally 500+ pages of people who happen to work at a video game company shooting at people or being murdered in real life.

The game is just a plot device to explain how some mobster's bank accounts got CryptoLockered and caused an endless torrent of death.

Spielberg adapting Ready Player One is like Kubrick making a movie about the losers featured in Room 237.

The only hope for this thing is Spielberg does a critical, facetious adaptation like Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers. But he won't.
>>
You're all right that it's Reddit, the movie, but feel free to call me crazy, the only reason I have a sliver of hope for it is because Speilberg's doing it and I'm excited to see him go back to the 80's.

I know, I know. It's probably going to be God awful.

No way Speilberg keeps in shit like >>69923193 and >>69929689 and >>69930019. He'll make it a more coherent story with that classic Speilberg Sense of Wonder™ and it'll be a pretty great tribute to the era done by one of its masters.

I actually found it kind of tiresome.

It reminded me of 24, not just in the general terrorists and shootouts sense, but in that the crisis NEVER stops. Like, just when it looks like the life-or-death struggle is over the next life-or-death struggle is already here and nobody has even gotten a minute to take a piss.

>"We stopped the army of crazed gunmen who came to kill us we're going to be OH SHIT A BOMB we've got to defuse this before it ticks down whew we did it OH FUCK IT HAD A POISON GAS BACKUP DEVICE let's all jump out the window TO BE SURROUNDED BY POLICE oh shit we're going to lose them AND BE CAPTURED BY THE TRIADS"

The "nerdy gamer" subculture is not as big as you think it is.
And before you say TBBT, it became more and more popular when it progressively started becoming more like every random sitcom with couples and normie problems.

Now that you mention it, this movie is probably going to appeal ONLY to TBBT fans and redditors.

We're going to see just how big of an uninterrupted market they are.

I'm not usually the kind of guy who just throws out "this is a meme book" as a complaint, because I like to show a bit more nuance. But this is literally just a meme book.

Every part of it is just a reference to a reference to a reference, it's an encyclopedia of 70's - 90's pop culture that a barely passable story was tacked onto.

It's the Adventures of Autismo, and his loyal friends Gary and Mary Sue; as read by Will 'Goddamnit' Wheaton.

I feel as if I have lost part of my life listening to the audiobook all the way through.
