It's obvious that the show will have one explanation as to why the children created the white walkers, while the books will have a similar one but far more fleshed out.
In the show they don't have time to explain in detail the waves of humans that settled the lands over thousands of years and the conflicts they had with the children and so on so they will simplify it so the average audience member can get what's going on in broad strokes.
In the books GRRM will explain it in a more intricate way that makes sense in the book continuity.
For instance it is fully possible that in the books there existed multiple factions of the children, some of which were in favor of peace with humans and some of them went fuck it and created the white walkers so they basically keep the humans in check or there might've been a certain event that made them go enough is enough.
Literally every single plot and subplot of the books is far more elaborate than it is in the show so this one will be the same.

I would say it added to mystery. We were introduced to orcs that looked like elves, so it is implied that maybe all the orcs are descendants of elves or they have the same origin or some shit.
