It was all peacekeeping things for the most part. The idea of a western soldier actually firing a weapon at someone was still somewhat rare and so unique it was newsworthy. If someone tells me that they read for enjoyment and laughingly claim that the novels of Anne Rice are far better than the books of Faulkner or Melville I might be a little incredulous as to the seriousness of their belief.
