I've started watching Star Trek and recently finished TOS. I'm starting on TNG and I've heard the first two seasons are rocky. Is there a recommend episodes view guide that cuts the fat?

voy is that cheese that smells like shit but is supposed to taste amazing. only people who really like cheese eat it and they only like it if they tell themselves they will like it. a lot of biuld up for a short end

While we're all here (all 15 of us), let's discuss one of those wonderful Star Trek theoreticals: Phase-Shifting.

How proposterous is this idea? Especially considering that oxygen atoms would not be phase shifted out our own ST continuum like in "The Next Phase".

Somehow, Ro Laren and Geordie La Forge can run across the floors with no problems but easily pass through walls, and can even push enemies through the hull into open space (thereby killing the enemy who now has devascularized and lacks an atmosphere from which he could breathe).

Seems so implausible yet they used it many many times more after that episode (not sure which episode proffered it initially).

It only seemed plausible on the Pegasus and later the Enterprise because theoretically everything within the Enterprise would be phase-shifted including atmosphere and bulkheads / hull.

Anyone else got an opinion on this shit???

When a distinguished but elderly poster states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

I am, I just felt the entire post was vaguely recollect of mine.

I agree with Clarke, but I just think in this case, the phase-shifting idea was cool until you actually thought about it in-depth.

There was no basis behind, but that's never stopped me from putting a ghost set of rules behind how "quantum torpedoes" work.

Still, that's part of sci-fi, and I'm just doing what we all do when shown something that seems amiss.

So what’s the deal with ranks in Star Trek?

Janeway is promoted from Captain directly to Vice Admiral (skipping Rear Admiral (lower half) and skipping Rear Admiral (upper half)).

Kirk is promoted from Cadet directly to Captain (skipping Ensign, skipping Lieutenant (junior grade), skipping Lieutenant, skipping Lieutenant-Commander and skipping Commander).

Nick Locarno is demoted from Lieutenant (junior grade) to Ensign, then promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant (junior grade), but Harry Kim is still just Harry Kim.

Are ranks supposed to mean something, or something?
>>
>>69906372
It was the best made of the TNG films, but a poor Trek film that ignored seasons of character development and played a part in ruining the Borg. I would rather not go to far into it though, If you are a Trek fan you have probably heard all the reasons people like and dislike it by now and I have already argued about it dozens of times.

O'Brien's rank changes are metafictional retcons, not in-universe events.

O'Brien is like a car mechanic or plumber or air conditioning repairman. He attended Starfleet Academy, but only to learn a trade, not to earn a degree or commission. And considering that 10-year-old children learn calculus[1] in Gene's Glorious Visionary Future of Evolved Humanity...

Are there any space video games that have a star trek feel? I've been playing stellaris but it is just a colony ship building simulator.
>>
>>69898141
I thought it was BS when I rewatched the episode recently. But now that I'm thinking about it a little more I think maybe it's because they have to be going a certain speed to "break through" a surface. Which is why they can run through walls and they were able to push the other guy off at the end of the episode.

Maybe if they jumped (high enough s.t. they would be going fast enough at impact with the floor, however high that is) they would fall through.

I've seen a good chunk of TOS as an adult and enjoyed it. I watched some ENT when I was young but I wasn't too it; it seemed to lack something.

How fucking stupid were the writers of Voyager episode "Prey" when preparing the decisions of Captain Janeway for the episode?

My second time around watching this episode and it's inconceivable how fucking ludicrous Janeway is in "feeling compassion" for a creature who's species wanted to purge their galaxy and said that "the weak shall perish" just half a season prior.

Literally the episode where Janeway went from out of her mind to incredibly stupid (oh, and out of her mind as well).

The speech where Seven basically tells her that her plan is retarded on more than two levels is also very gratifying. So many appallingly poor written elements to this episode. In the end, they tried making Seven look obstinate but they made their main protagonist look like a fucking imbecile.

I'm literally mad at the writers after watching this again.

It's Star Trek though.

You can say that the writers are incompetent because they presented Janeway's position poorly, but Janeway is still in the right.

Within the fictional universe of Star Trek, it's a universal law that things will always work out well for the Federation eventually so long as they continue to offer kindness and compassion and friendship to other species.
>>
>>69920627
And it worked with species 8472 as well at the end. They made piece with them in a later episode.

The worst of Enterprise wasn't as bad as the worst of Voyager and the best of Enterprise was better than the best of Voyager.
>>
Janeway is not in the right because she stuck to a plan that would have gotten her and the crew killed for the sake of the compassion of a creature that proved it lacked an empathy. A conscious projection of morality onto a species that for all intents and purpose has shown nothing but malevolence while simultaneously ignoring 6 ships that have you outgunned.

But, knowing these threads, this obvious bait and I really don't care to go 20 posts deep over a fishing trip.

This is why Voyager damages the franchise because it offers a a lens to a reality where everyone on the ship blindly follows a death wish on the flimsy basis of a moral assumption.

>>69920755

That episode hadn't happened yet so your sentiment is null and void.
Also, they didn't make "piece" with them because of any of the events in "Prey", they did so through the events that unfolded in that episode.

O'Brien is a Warrant Officer, which is a weird kind of commission unique to the navy. He outranks non-commissioned officers, but it still subordinate to commissioned officers, even an Ensign.

So they sometimes refer to him as an "officer" as when they think he and Julian got killed on an away mission, and he sort of is, but not in the same way like, Sisko or Dax or Julian are.

I got a better question, why did the Doctor give up on that one crewman who's heart exploded because of the experienment and didn't do an emergency transport to put her in status to implant a new heart. Kim got shit on by the writers constantly because he said something negative about them in regards to how they gave the spotlitght to alien characters.

They were going to kill him off, but he was voted one of the sexist men alive for whatever year, so that didn't pan off. So they just shat on him constantly, never promoted him ('someone has to be the ensign') and the biggest slight is that if you took a director's course for actors, you were allowed to direct an episode, common thing, but Kim was the only one not allowed to direct an episode even though he took the class.

Actually, the EMH proved to be the most resourceful of all the Doctors: modifying Borg nanoprobes to push Species 8472 back into fluidic space, ECH taking over with his photonic cannon improvising, Macro-virus anti-agent, working with Lon Suder to take down the Kazon and retake the ship, and of course the infamous "reintegration of the original DNA" from Tom and Janeway's medical records to make a cure for Warp 10 (among countless other times).

The entire series basically wouldn't have left season 2 without the EMH.

Daily reminder that Pulaski is the best doctor.

>Hurr, just gender bent bones
Who gives a shit? She did a good job of bringing some life to the cardboard cutouts the characters were in season one. Especially Data and Worf.

She also did he fucking job in trying to save lives. Like when the enterprise met that nebula face who killed the black helmsmen because he found out the replicator couldn't make fired chicken and grape soda anymore. Did Pulaski just take pulse and declare he was dead like that faggot Crusher or The Doctor? Fuck no, she took a scan, got a hypospray and injected the guy with something, then scanned again, and tried something else. And then tried it a third time before calling it. He might have died, but at least Pulaski fucking tried.

That was a Seven of Nine idea that was later never used again by the writers. Another blunder of not seeing the forest for the trees like in some previously unnamed episodes written by a certain man named Braga.

More to the point, he was the most important Doctor in saving the crew multiple times. Only Phlox comes close when you start to add up the enormity of stuff the EMH did throughout the entire series. It's not even close.

It's a shame, she was a bit of a twat, but actually grew as a character to the point she drank poison to join in with Worfs traditions.

>>

The whole point of her character was to be combative, which is what turned people off, but she was able to immediately find her footing and created some great dynamics with the crew. Hell, Data wouldn't be beloved as a character as he is right now, if it wasn't for his interactions with Pulaski.

Michael McKean actually made that episode worth watching because he's such a damn good actor.

It's called "The Thaw" and it has some funny moments in it as I recall. Sort of absurd-horror moments mixed in to the fray.

His vision made more sense in the midst of a Cold War world with paranoid super powers facing off with apocalypse weapons, right after the first half of the century which was fraught with spectacular wars. He wanted to paint a picture of human Utopianism to counteract what looked like a world set to destroy itself in the 60s.

That made less sense in the late 80's/early 90s when the great red enemy had been neutered or vanquished. He was just an old man by then and wasn't willing to change. Star Trek got better when it added some additional depth and the Federation wasn't just a boring, morally superior group of boy scouts who could do no wrong.
