What i got out of it was that he did have a wife and daughter as Chad stated he had seen them before and the girl in the picture was not her. Then he probably took the runaway girl into his home and wanted her to replace the daughter he lost. He killed her when she tried to run away. Then he wanted MEW to take the role.
