doesn't matter that they were unexplained in the comics, comics have a lot of undefined or OP shit that is brought up for an issue or two and never seen again.
Adapting them to the movie gave them the possibility to set up parameters for what a character can and cannot do; I've heard plenty of times that they were going to give SW's powers a stronger definition in CW but that never happened.

The Marvel universe is a continuity trainwreck. The MCU should have stayed tight and focused, without an excessive proliferation of superpowered characters. It has its roots in Iron Man, remember, and they fucked with the explanation of Thor to take all the magic and divinity out of him, to the extent of centering the plot of the first movie around scientists.
Thor was a mistake. Ant-Man would have been a better choice for the Avengers.
