The long pic series that compares - hilariously might I add - Snyder to Jesus. Even if you genuinely believe that the symbolism is truly worthwhile, that's taking your liking for a movie way too far. Even for nerddom.

This has to be /tv/'s most elaborate trolling attempt ever.

Also, no, not all of us agree with the most "out there" connections some of the captures make, but I'm the guy who made the ones about Pa Kent and the ones specifically about Lex. I'm also one of the guys who posted up what I thought the religious imagery was there to convey, and then I went back and supported it through the actions and dialogue of certain characters, and when and where the imagery appears.

But that makes me the troll, I guess.

Well one of the complaints about that movie is the rather heavy handed Christian imagery. And that image set opens with Snyder being compared to Jesus. Which is carried throughout the set. That is trolling to me.

Understand that I find the discussion amusing, but I am still expectiing some kind of payoff for that symbolism, as well as some more contrast between the viewpoints. Aping other movies and well known art is not sufficient.
Neither is weighing down and killing Superman in his second movie.
Hell, the 18 months timeskip brings nothing to the story.

The payoff is that it's going to be addressed on his return. Granted, that's just the prediction, but it has to be, because halfway through BvS, we see Clark realizing what sort of image he's projecting, what it means, and what it could lead to.

Just so we're on the same page, are you familiar with what the fans almost universally agree it's there to convey?

I just joined this thread but how about the use of symbolism in the infamous 'Martha' scene?

Honestly though guys can someone explain to me what the issue mods and other people have with some people who (god forbid) enjoyed a movie that wasn't universally accepted and them having a discussion about various aspects of the movie? I understand there are a lot of threads about 'capeshit' (most of which is random crap anyways), but most of them are remade threads due to the previous ones being deleted or raided by idiots. We had a really good thread going a few hours back that was started by an OP who was genuinely interested in an explanation with examples which ended up being invaded by a bunch of shit posters and got deleted.

How is it that our threads about movie discussions... on /tv/... get deleted, and then the constant spew of shit and memes that plague 90% of this board don't get deleted? Why is it so hard to have an innocent discussion amongst fans?

OK, here's the Cliff's Notes version of what many of us think:

It's not there to tell us "Superman = God." That's meaningless and doesn't really bring anything to the story, no more than it did when Singer did it in "Superman Returns."

What it's there for is to indicate when the people in Clark's world are unconsciously deifying him. It's the answer to Perry White's question: "Do you know how people would react if they knew there was someone like this out there?" It's why Pa Kent jumps up to go find Clark the instant Pete Ross's mom starts in with the "act of God!" bit.

It's what humanity has started to do without even being aware of it - when presented with a being that is clearly biologically and technologically superior, many of them start seeking to turn him into a god.

That doesn't mean anything to Superman. He's just a guy. He doesn't even want it and knows it can lead to really bad places, but there's someone coming that might actually benefit from it, and I for one think that he's going to have a hand in Superman's return.

The whole 'killing Superman in his second movie' thing to me, just seemed like the perfect device to get the world to be on his side and realise that his intentions were good. Seriously, what more can you do to prove you're a good guy to everyone who is doubting you. You could see it by the end monument and funeral scenes. I never saw it as an 'oh my god so emotional Supes is dead!!' sort of thing - just something that was needed for the people of Earth.

So many people believe Superman and Batman just stopped fighting because they had the same mothers names. I'm not sure if it has just become a running joke or what but I've met some people in person who think that so I'm assuming it is a fairly common view.

Saying Martha is what made Bruce pause at first and was a key word to spark his flashback. You see the spear and Batman from Superman's perspective, pointing at him. We then see in the flashback a close up of the robber's gun shooting his mother. This then cuts to Bruce as a child falling down the cave, from the light into the dark. Then most importantly, it directly cuts to a close up of Batman in real time, symbolizing his fall to what he has become now. It then goes to his father, saying with his dying breath, "Martha", just as Superman is doing now. It is now that Batman realises he has become the very person that ruined his life. He is now the criminal in the alley, holding the weapon over an innocent person. Lois runs in and claims that Martha is his mothers name which shows that Superman has a human side to him. It ends with Batman throwing the spear away in disgust (shown by his facial expressions) because of what he has become.

Whether you like it or not, that is symbolism and it is things like that which are in the movie that make it interesting to talk about. That is how I interpreted the scene and it makes perfect sense to people when I explain it to them.
>>
>>69764675
I think the pendulum's going to swing too far. Man, when he comes back, shit could get real. Remember those "Supertroopers" kneeling when he landed in the Knightmare?

We could be getting some of that, maybe the same future by a different road.
>>
>>69764799
Not to mention the whole dual Ahab/Arthur thing.

Bruce picks up the spear, thinking himself the worthy hero(Arthur) and ends up tossing it away in disgust when he realizes he's just being an obsessive vendetta-seeker(Ahab).
>>
>>69762196
Transformers 3 and 4.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone in /tv/ even make a suggestion on what those movies were about, even though they have narratives and shit.
>>
>>69764807
Yeah it could, but that knightmare sequence wasn't a dream and those supertroopers are what resulted from Supes going bad.
>>
>>69764642
the funny thing to me about the complains about the superman connection to jesus in the movie, is that jesus and christianity exist in that world. martha kent has a cross necklace in the scene in the warehouse, the guy in wayne towner prays as he's about to die, these details are just as important to figuring out the meaning of superman within the movie

and even the guy talking to degrasse tyson lays it out for audience "most religions have a messianic figure, ninety percent of people believe in a higher power" superman obviously would touch that aspect of the human psyche if he were real.

i see the framing of elements of way to make subtext explicit while also presenting with a frame of reference to look through, we have to look through this frame and see what's on the other side

so far superman has been 2 for 2 in so far as dealing with figures that represent some sort of anxiety in current culture, and the fact that it's being presented through the lens of a dying/rising myth clicked for me as being sort of the ultimate experience we have as humans.

it's not that snyder is saying that superman is a god, it's that superman's real existence would put these things into question as has been stated by jonathan and perry
>>
>>69762196
>implying
>>
>>69764907
Oh absolutely.

On another level(and this is where I initially came into it), it works as a visual metaphor for what being Superman is - a guy trying to be a hero in a world where his nature(alien) and his environment(Earth) conspire to make him seem like a god.

You know something that just clicked for me last week? An explanation for the near smash-cut from Bruce at the computer to the Knightmare, to the false-awakening: Kryptonian dream tech - the same stuff Zod used on Clark in MoS,

I think maybe they're going to make time-travel incredibly difficult, like maybe the best they can do is open up a tiny wormhole and send telepathic messages through, That would explain the swirling papers(the wormhole) and Bruce seeming to wake up twice - it was that moment of connection that provided his "Flashforward" followed by the Flash establishing contact.

If they're really smart, whatever tech they used to open the wormhole is going to use some crazy rare energy source. I can think of a really good one:

Did you get it? The rock?
>>
>>69764907
The first reaction of the first witness to Clark's powers is to believe he is a God's sent.

I mean, the movie is not really hard to understand, how retarded the people can be to miss this shit?
>>
>>69765080
Holy fuck. This is true. This explains so much the dream sequence. They reverse engineered the dream machine in the future and use Flash's speedforce to send the dreams through time and reach Bruce.
>>
>>69765092
It's funny - once you start looking at it from that angle, there's a few instances of subtle humor that make their way into the film. For instance, that bar scene where he wrecks that guy's rig, Lots of people were like, "What an asshole! Superman just destroyed that guy's livelihood," but fact is, insurance is definitely going to cover that. Know what clause it will fall under?

Act of God.
>>
>>69765165
So you think the fact that insurance would cover it makes everything okay?
Superman is a menace. Public enemy #1!
>>
>>69765142
In that same vein, did we ever see Zod's dropship take back off after he went after the scout ship in MoS? I was thinking about that the other day. That would mean there's still a pristine piece of Kryptonian tech out there somewhere in the Arctic.
>>
>>69765080
That's a very interesting thought actually...

I'm not sure if you know this but Flash has the ability to time travel if he runs fast enough. So I saw that scene as the alternate timeline in which Lois seems to die, "she was my world", and Supes loses it (we saw how close he was when Lex kidnapped Martha). This resulted in angry Supes that caused the Knightmare timeline which is why Flash came back saying "you were right about him" and so forth. But Flash coming back alters the timeline and changes something Bruce does (butterfly effect) hence no more evil Supes. The knightmare we saw wasn't a dream, but perhaps a timeline remnant that remained because it was his last memory before being jolted back to this new timeline. Hence why the papers were flying because it wasn't a dream, but a timeline alteration.

Confusing yes, but thats time travel for you.

Oh, I'm with you, Lifelong comics fan here. I'm thinking they're going to use something like the old "cosmic treadmill" idea to put the Flash's OP time-travel abilities on a real short leash, a good idea, in my opinion.

Also, I think the fact that he's too soon might open the door to some pretty spooky possibilities - think about this: what if his message served to guarantee the very future he thought he was preventing, In other words, Bruce stays his hand, is inspired back on to the "righteous path" by Clark's heroism, stops killing, spares Leto's Joker at some future point only to have him go on and kill Lois.

Injustice. Still Injustice.

You can find answers for that shit in previous threads. Use the catalog and fuck off to your threads.

Try to join the dots:

>Luthor wants to kill Superman and Batman
>Luthor has an anti-Superman living weapon

Geez I wonder what is Lex Luthor's plan?

Oh hell yeah it was! They do that sort of thing all the time in comics. While one could argue that doesn't translate well to the big screen, I think it's a nod in the direction of comics fans.

Batman killing was because this was a fucked up Batman who had been through some shit. He did whatever it took to get the job done hence the "new rules" scene with Alfred. He didn't kill Superman because >>69764799 he realised he was no better than that guy who killed his parents. The random criminals in that warehouse fight scene was Batman not fully returned to the one we know from other movies/comics. He is still doing whatever it takes to finally get his opportunity to save Martha for once. It isn't until Supes sacrifices himself that inspires the hope of humanity back into Bruce hence is little "men are still good speech" and the "I failed him in life, I wont fail him in death". This is also shown in the fact that he didn't brand Lex in prison because the "Bat brand is a death sentence in prison".

Lex's plan was to disprove the lie that power can be innocent. He first hints to this at his party speech with the whole ramble about "books are knowledge, and knowledge is power". He has a power complex because despite him being the smartest man on the planet, everyone sees Superman as the 'god' due to his power. This also ties in with his long dialogue on his rooftop with Supes "if god is all powerful, he cannot be all good". So he sends Superman off on a win-win situation for Lex which was also buying time for Doomsday to be created because that was the end goal. He would do whatever it takes to create something so powerful that there is no way it could be all good and be seen as a god, thus finally disproving the lie - "now god is good as dead". Plus at this point he knew Darkseid is coming, to him, Earth is on borrowed time and he will do whatever it takes to finish his mission.

Batman trusted WW only to an extent because she was interested in the same man he was. It's not like he ran into actual WW until the final fight anyways.
>>
>>69765340
Yeah that treadmill idea would actually be great now that I think about it. God and here I was so certain my idea was right then you go and bring this in...

Yeah that line of him being too soon has thrown me off the minute I heard it. It could really refer to so many things.
>>
>>69765402
The writing was shit, plain and simple. I never even thought it would be possible to fuck up a capeshit story since everything has already been written. Hell, you even know whether or not the audience back then liked the story. But somehow, DC managed to fuck up the story.
>>
>>69765568
>Plus at this point he knew Darkseid is coming, to him, Earth is on borrowed time and he will do whatever it takes to finish his mission.

But he was making logos and shit that implied he wanted to make his own Justice League.
>>
>>69765619
>I didnt understand the writing, so its shit.

You wanted Lex to have a 5 minutes Bond villain monologue explaining how he was reuniting his own Justice League. And they didnt give you.

Even my normie friends understood Lex was gathering meta humans to appear to be the hero.

Any time someone says something about Lex's plan or Martha I instantly discard their opinions. There are several things you could complain rightful;y about the movie, but not those ones. It just reveals you as a retard.
>>
>>69765568
How did Lex know about Darkseid and why would it be a smart move to kill Superman before he arrives? More importantly, how was the audience suppose to know it?
And Batman trusting everyone because Martha is retarded as fuck. Plus, he mowed down people with a minigun. Was he not noticing that he shoots them?
>>
>>69765658
I don't think he wanted to make his own Justice League because he wanted to forge his silver bullet so he didn't have to depend on the kindness of monsters. I think the logos were there just cuz... He had the WW because the WW is part of her armour that is shown in the photo he had of her. The Flash's logo, if you look at the file names before the video pops up, a few of them are the red streak. Which is the name initially given to him by the media because thats all people knew of him at first. So he has obviously obtained his red suit (and thus probably the logo). So those were essentially copies. I think the logos were just used for easy marking in his files. Heck I once did some work experience at an engineering company that used a couple logos here and there for their big projects. It was very strange and unorthodox and I've never seen it anywhere else. That's probably the reason I never had an issue with this whole logos thing everyone complains about.
>>
>>69765732
>How did Lex know about Darkseid
There is literally a scene dedicated to address this when the ship asks Lex if he wants to know all the secrets of the universe and Lex says to the machine start from the beginning. Pretty sure Darkseid is relevant to the history of the universe.

Why am I even responding to such retarded questions? You have a whole fucking scene dedicated to explain this really shitty and entry level question about the movie! God fuck Im easy to b8.
>>
Zack snyder is a literal genius

Favorite director ever
>>
>>69765568
That was a really good succinct explanation of Lex's motivations. If ever I need to speak of this film IRL again I will use this.
>>
>>69765732
Lex knew when he asked the scout ship to teach him everything. We won't find out until future but I believe it has something to do with the Motherbox that activated thanks to Cyborg - it called Darkseid. Lex probably thinks the world is absolutely fucked, he just wants to prove to everyone he was right, he wants to bring Superman down no matter what - Lex101 right there. Audience knowing it I agree it would be lost amongst the casuals and perhaps could have been handled better in that sense.

Batman killing I just explained and you may find it retarded but I found it perfectly fine.

>>
>>69766164
We have no idea about Darkseid yet. Perhaps something that's just a wait and see because we are only 2 movies into this universe. Perhaps Darkseid has some sort of kryptonian tech on Apokalips that sent out an alarm. We don't know yet

Yeah, it is obvious he does not like the attention, but even so that's a real long shot. Not in universe perhaps, since we don't know how much time will pass between BvS and JL part 1, but with the in between movies pushing all of that to the sidelines. The construction of the universe is a little bizarre to me.

>>69764675
> the perfect device to get the world to be on his side
The world pretty much already is on his side. There are dissenters and worshippers but really the world seems to have an altogether positive outlook. And killing Superman would have made more sense - in my opinion - in a movie focused on him first, not on his opposition with a few.

>>69764799
This is all readily obvious and overwrought. There is little functional difference between Batman realising his excessive use of force because of the name similarity or because it triggers his memories of his most defining moment in life. Comparing him to Ahab and having Supes as his white whale is all well and good when so very little attention is given to the build up of the character and his hatred for Supes.

>>69765080
Not sure I follow. Kryptonite?

>>69765165
Except this took place at least 2 years before, and he has no proof that Supes was responsible. But this post was in jest so eh.

>>69765568
I'd argue that any connection between Superman and Batman is insufficiently explored in BvS, to the point where Batman choosing to uphold an ideal that Superman is hardly shown carrying rings hollow. This is World's Finest going through the motions, not actually creating one of the most famous comic book friendship and partnership. Which can really be said for most of the movie. Copying The Dark Knight Returns and exploring the same themes is not the same.

And as far as Darkseid goes, this is metatextual knowlegde rooted in comics and a deleted scenes that should not have been deleted. It should have, if anything, replaced the altogether pointless bullet plot.
>>
Just wait for when the Blu-Ray hits, you ain't seen nothing yet
>>
>>69766370
If they had that genesis chamber, perhaps. Depends how it works because Superman was born naturally.

Also on the topic of Doomsday's birth, a line that really got me thinking was "the Kryptonian council declared never AGAIN shall such a deformity be created". I don't think the Doomsday we saw in BvS was the real one. Similar to how in the comics we saw weaker clone versions of him. It would make sense how Lex knew what he was doing creating 'Doomsday', because it had been created before. What if the real one is still out there, perhaps in the phantom zone?
>>
>>69766361

In the comics, maybe. In snyders superman and watchmen, Manhatten and superman are both treated gravely, and as messianic. With tv roundtables and politicians discussing them, and scenes of people surrendering to them like gods. And then the question of "is allowing a "person" to have this much power acceptable" Which is the same question that's posed in civil war.

People who discuss these fucking capeshits are hilarious. Literally grown men debating stories comprised of a handful of tropes and cliches while cgi beams make buildings explode. I hate that this genre comprises at least half of all major film releases now

It was explored from one angle in Watchmen, where "god" really is a god for all intents and purposes, and ultimately only just barely cares about humanity and its notions about morality.

Different angle here.
>>
>>69766425
>Not sure I follow. Kryptonite?

Exactly that. Would be quite a surprise to find out that the future Batman was looking for it to power the device rather than kill Superman. It's the first thing he says in his "flashforward."

>Except this took place at least 2 years before, and he has no proof that Supes was responsible. But this post was in jest so eh.

yeah, different angle to go into a different direction entirely

because a movie that was about fate and futility is the same as a movie about hope in humanity. this is going fucking nowhere
>>
>>69770821
OK, let's try again.

>>69769985 explains Dr. Manhattan's role.

Here's Superman's: a guy that totally isn't a god but people insist on seeing in that light tries to find a way to shed that persona and re-establish contact with humanity as just a hero and a symbol of hope rather than being perceived as the ultimate symbol of the futility of human achievement.

Additionally, it's entirely possible that all the "worship" is going to mean something to the coming "big bad." He is a god, after all, and it's been a common trope in both comics and other fantasy genre for gods to wax and wane in power depending on how much "belief" is getting thrown in their direction.
>>
>>69770977
no, i get that. what i'm saying is that the comparisons to watchmen are superficial. and i'm not sure if talking about BvS is going to go anywhere, here i am interested in the movie and what can come next but fuck me this whole thing is tiresome
>>
>>69771258
I know where you're coming from.

While we're on the topic, how do you think they're going to handle the Amazons? As a comics fan, I don't mind the whole Greek Pantheon angle, but can understand their wanting to avoid it.
>>
>>69771357
no fucking clue to me it seems the modus operandi is to have elements of the movies that are associable with some real life thing ie the reality/fantasy line they're playing with.
i can imagine the symbolic meaning of the amazons well but i don't know the real life counterpart that would anchor it
>>
The only thought BvS provoked was "how the fuck is Zack Snyder still employed?"
>>
>>69771627
A couple of weeks back, someone pointed me to a "prequel" comic book that explained how the scout ship ended up on earth. While there's no indication that it's canon, there was a survivor.

I'm wondering if they intend to streamline everything down into Kryptonian genes being the source of all metahumans, Would be particularly interesting where the Amazons are concerned, considering the lone survivor of the crash was Kara Zor-El.
>>
>>69762196
This depresses me because I loved BvS so much. I legit think the hate comes from the movie so strongly defying all the conventions of the genre. Deadpool didn't do that at all, by the way. It was the same old capeshit but with R-rated jokes this time.

BvS seems like the kind of movie to me that will become a cult hit. I like to think a few years down the road people will begin to realize how great it is. But because of the way it was panned, many people won't see it at all. I fear for the future of the DCEU. I really want more films like BvS and MoS, but it's literally going to be emulating Marvel from now on.
>>
>>69771880
I really hope that's not the case. At least we'll always have this original trio.
>>
>>69771752
that was probably me
some guy went full cradle of civilization with it and there is credence to that; snyder has said that the spaceship was used to make a connection to the start of civilization twenty thousand years ago. then there's the scene in which clark's ship arrives to the solar system next to saturn.

so yes, there's a use of our own mythologies i take as being used more for subconscious association. who knows how seriously we can take the recent 'leaks'
>>
>>69771993
When I heard that Diana's weapons and shields aren't magical, I made that leap to it being a mutation of Kryptonians' whole "bio force field" thing.

I was actually kind of surprised when I saw that there's definitely going to be magic, what with the Enchantress being in Suicide Squad and all. I hope they're going to play up that whole perception versus reality angle that's been running so far, as that opens up the door to one of my favorite comics arcs: "The Books of Magic."

Have you heard anything about how the Squad lines up with MoS and BvS chronologically?
>>
>>69772214
i heard that the movies are vaguely in real time. i don't know though

the connection i made is to the joker and the comments on shamanism.
obviously BvS has the mental thing going with how it starts in a dream where bruce talks about diamond absolutes and light, as well as how batman and superman could be seen as a sort of duality thing, with both going through a process of inner transformation

i'm not well read enough on magic and esotericism to comment but to me there is a play of images and ideas going on which very well ties into what i've heard magic really is irl

That's all in how you view Jor-El's vision of Krypton's legacy. Jor-El looks at Clark and whatever future he builds on Earth to be a truer legacy than Krypton's stagnant culture and "science worship," as embodied in the Kryptonian genetics program.
>>
>>69774419

We have to stop. Its unnatural. We are advancing too much and too fast and we will burn like Icarus.

Humankind must evolve at its own pace. This can only end in tragedy.

You're stating the obvious. You're not profound. We don't like you because half of you are being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian, while the other half is made up of pseudo intellectual tryhards

Threads like these actually censor anything non-capeshit
>>
>>69796002
Do you prefer containment threads or the shotgun approach?

If you just hate all discussion of cape-related movies, I understand, but the fact remains that this fanbase is making an effort to police themselves and keep junk threads to a manageable level.

This thread was the result of about a 6 hour span where some assblasted Marvel faggots were reporting any and all DC discussion. Here's where an anon called it to site admins' attention.
