Wtf did I just watch? This is an instant horror classic.

Question:
were the twins the witch?

Why did people like this movie? It was pretty boring and meaningless. I was never a big fan of the witches meme, but the witches in this one were specifically stupid. What was their goal, why did the girl with the boys name join them?

of course not, she eats them

Pretty uninspiring movie.

So many different paths it could have taken yet left untrod.

Only good thing was the voice of the father. Imagine having a voice like that.

To please Satan. They're pretty shallow villains, but the whole point was that it was based on puritan superstition.

>but the whole point was that it was based on puritan superstition
This part is what I don't get. I think the movie would have been better if there were no real witches. I mean in the end it wasn't superstition, the witches were real and people did died because of them.
What is the message of the movie? You shouldn't accuse your family members, but rather look for some shady shack in the woods were evil old hags are cooking children?
>>
>>69438117
I just want to stick my 12 incher in her mouth and fondle her 14 year old boobs whislt she tries to say hail Mary.
>>
>>69438117
She was being turned away from God because of the way her family treated her. They already treated her like she was a degenerate and projected all their shit onto her. She didn't want to be handed off to be someone's wife. The witches and Satan helped her and then recruited her.

Alyhough there's the whole thing with the corn being rotten (most likely infected with ergot) so she may have gone crazy and killed her family and just hallucinated the whole thing
>>
>>69440297
The witches are evil, but the family kill themselves just as much as supernatural evil kills them.

They're only out in the wilderness beccause of their father's pride, and his insistence that he knew the word of God better than the others on the plantation. They tore themselves apart with accusations of witchcraft, and the wife explicitly says that she no longer feels close to christ, which is a big deal for a puritan chick.

Not to mention, in the end, william gives up and drops the axe, allowing Black Philip to kill him, because he has learned to trust God's judgement over his own, even if that means his death

It was just your typical puritan message.

The only one who was actually saved by Jesus was Caleb because he absolved himself and gave himself to Christ and all that shit.

The idea is that evil was all around them and they were fighting a losing battle.

Nevermind that the natives seem to get along fine without witches fucking their shit up.

Maybe the movie's message was a subtle nod to shamanism and ancestral worship being superior to christianity.
>>
>>69440297
The point was to show why the whole witch folklore existed during those times. Young women who were repressed by patriarchal religious society who wanted to rebel and get away from it all. There are some good books on it. The Witches are the direct opposite of her family.

The part about the fungus makes me feel stupid.

But how does that explain:

the bird pecking at the mother's breast (and her bleeding afterwards)?

the boy throwing up an entire apple?
>>
>>69440818
meant to say: makes me feel stupid for not thinking of that.

My bad.
>>
It plays of superstitions and fear really well, i quite like they removed the whole but waz it awl reel aspect I wholly expected from it, it's been done to death and even with what we have stuff like >>69440688 is pretty plausible to believe if you feel like you enjoy the movie more from such a perspective.

The cinematography was good with some great moments, the sets were great and felt authentic and the dialogue was fukken tip tier. You don't even really need that good writing when you use well thought out old-ish english dialogue in this kind of a movie, the atmosphere of it all goes a long way by itself.
Also nice they didnt play too much on cliches like half the movie revolving around the family shaming Thomasin for losing the baby, also the mother projecting sins on her wasnt done in an annoying way as I was expecting.
>>
>>69440688
Would be funny if this really was true, but I highly doubt it. It's too far fetched.

>>69440818
Did they ever say anything about that fungus or what exactly was wrong with the corn? Ergot fungus usually is on cereal and doesn't destroy the plants and it certainly doesn't grow on bread.
But if the story really should be about something as far fetched as the previous poster said, I guess such facts wouldn't really matter anyways.

That's not my dispute. My dispute is nothing in the narrative supports the events not being real. Things happen outside the viewpoint of Thomasin and the family as a whole, so there is no reason to doubt they actually happened.

The corn you see today is the result of selective breeding. Originally, it looked very much like rye and wheat plants.

Here in the US, corn is typically seen as a veggie. But nope, it's a grain.

The face of pure bliss that Caleb display with his last breath when he finally surrender to Satan and embracing his eternal life in hell was amazing.

Does that mean that we are condemned not matter what?

He has a theater background and said he hasn't yet found any modern material that he wants to make into a movie. Those are just the two most interesting things I gleaned from reading a few articles over the last couple days. I definitely have high hopes for him. I never realized I wanted someone from theater who pays attention to details to make movies, but it seems so right now: all the passion and rigor of stage plus the realism of movie props/sets.

Sure but that's not what I meant. I meant the grain doesn't look like it would have an ergot problem. It looks more like your typical witch induced ruined harvest (which is basically mold?).

That's why I asked if the family identified the problem as an ergot problem? Because I can't remember that they specifically mentioned it. If they really said it, then the movie did a poor job of visually portraying the ergot infestation.

>then the pieces began to fall into place. Caporael, now a behavioral psychologist at New York’s Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, soon noticed a link between the strange symptoms reported by Salem’s accusers, chiefly eight young women, and the hallucinogenic effects of drugs like LSD. LSD is a derivative of ergot, a fungus that affects rye grain. Ergotism — ergot poisoning — had indeed been implicated in other outbreaks of bizarre behavior, such as the one that afflicted the small French town of Pont-Saint-Esprit in 1951
>Toxicologists now know that eating ergot-contaminated food can lead to a convulsive disorder characterized by violent muscle spasms, vomiting, delusions, hallucinations, crawling sensations on the skin, and a host of other symptoms — all of which, Linnda Caporael noted, are present in the records of the Salem witchcraft trials
>Nearly all of the accusers lived in the western section of Salem village, a region of swampy meadows that would have been prime breeding ground for the fungus
>consumed in the winter of 1691-1692 — when the first unusual symptoms began to be reported — could easily have been contaminated by large quantities of ergot. The summer of 1692, however, was dry, which could explain the abrupt end of the “bewitchments.”

I know you completely missed the point of the movie because you're fixated on the things that do not matter. The bonfire scene doesn't matter; it's an epilogue to the real story. The changes that the characters undergo are what matter.

It starts off with a resolutely devout family; so devout, in fact, that they choose to leave their community because they think their community isn't devout enough.

Afterward, we see them all slowly fall apart in their steadfast love for God. The baby's sin is original sin, and he wasn't baptized. Caleb's sin is he gives in to lust. The twins are just little shits mostly, and they engage in talking with the goat. The father lies when he sells the cup and then is bad when he locks his own children in the barn. The mother is overcome by rage when she attacks her daughter, and thomasin, if she wasn't already evil, literally makes a deal with the devil.

I don't really see how you could show that in a flat out non arty way either and already its not like it used a 5 minutes long shot of a suspended chick fucking a broom or anything.

Also I don't really see how the drama is forced or how nothing happens, there is a lot of ground to why the family is falling apart both with the religious aspect, the jealousy of the mother at her daughter's growing sexuality and the fathers inability to support the family and his powerlessness at the situation. I can see how one can think the scenery is generic since it all happens around the same place but it's a movie about scary shit happening at a farm, what do you expect to be the main setting? Not to mention the forest and the farm itself looked authentic and eerie.

Here, baited a serious reply from me.

I felt like the father dying by the goat was his way of basically giving up after seeing his family and life fall apart and his daughter basically spelling out for him he's useless and it's all because of his own pride, there is also the whole thing with him having brought the family to the new world from England where they lived a comfortable life too and his wife quite openly resenting it.

I don't think the movie intends to paint religion as madness, but how their own repressive puritan rules backfired, and led them to greater evils. Remember, the family was hardcore puritans, who got kicked out of England, and again kicked out of the colony.
>>
I think all these "its boring and stupid lmao" posts are just people who didn't get or enjoy the movie one bit so they feel like they need to tell everyone how wrong they are for liking it just so they feel less stupid about themselves

I think this movie would have been alot better wihout the horror element. If you want to explore the madness of a disfunctional family you don't fucking add demons and witches to the mix it just does not work.

You will go with expectetions of seeing som spooky shit only to realize you are watching some half assed soap opera with "horror" elements in it.

You really are NOT getting what I'm saying. The change could go in the other direction: characters start out non-believers and end up devout. It's literally not important unless you're highly insecure about your own views of the world. What's important is that characters are given believable reasons to change their opinions within the film. In the witch, the characters are given valid reasons to change.

Is green text all you can do, or do you actually know how to convey an idea? When oldies say texting has destroyed this generation's ability to communicate effectively, I usually say that's bullshit, but you really do make me think there might be some truth to what they're saying.
>>

>>
>>69443184
I don't think Black King Phillip and his band of witches detracted from the core story. The director has a puritan background, and a love for folk tales of old. It seemed to work seamlessy to me.
>>
>>69443184
That's the marketing's fault that you expected jump scare payoffs. The movie works perfectly as it is.

It'd be different if the movie was told 100% through Thomasin's eyes, but everyone saw Caleb spit up the apple. The gun pointed at the rabbit malfunctioned, and Caleb was there to see it and help take care of his dad. I don't think there's anything in the movie to make it seem like it was all a hallucination.

Various circumstantial pieces of evidence doesn't confirm something, faglord. "It was the right time of the year for ergot to grow." Doesn't mean that ergot was growing, the people of Salem ate it, and that's what caused the Salem Witch Trials. It's not a theory that can be verified at all with any present evidence. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plot_%28narrative%29

>Plot refers to the sequence of events inside a story which affect other events through the principle of cause and effect. The causal events of a plot can be thought of as a series of sentences linked by "and so." Plots can vary from simple structures such as in a traditional ballad to complex interwoven structures sometimes referred to as an imbroglio. The term plot can serve as a verb and refer to a character planning future actions in the story.

>Deciding to stay despite losing family members left and right is realistic?
They want to stay even after the baby is gone. After Caleb is gone they're waiting for him. Once he dies, they're supposed to go back the next morning, but everyone dies before that can happen. Also during all this the father is resolute until that last day that no witch is afoot. He thinks it's just him versus the elements, not him versus literal devil/witch.

These aren't decisions by the characters you idiot.

>Deciding to stay despite losing family members left and right is realistic?

They lost a baby. Not really a reason to leave.
They lost their boy. They suspect Thomasin at first so moving made no sense.
The twins get lost in the last act when it's already too late.

You try real hard to seem smart but to anyone who's actually smart, you just seem dumb by even trying.

Except when people die simultaneously in an explosion. People tend to die off one by one.

holy shit!

>They lost a baby. Not really a reason to leave.
>They lost their boy. They suspect Thomasin at first so moving made no sense.
>moving made no sense

Of course not because if you live a misarble fucking existance and your family is being killed off you will just stay put as if nothing happened because "muh pride" "muh sins" this so fucking stupid you can't make this shit up.

>You try real hard to seem smart but to anyone who's actually smart, you just seem dumb by even trying.

and you think you will appear as "smart" if you keep replying on something you consider dumb? If you think I'm some sort of a retarded shitposter why keep elaborating these post then? Move along Einstein.

>Except when people die simultaneously in an explosion. People tend to die off one by one.

You just confirmed my claims here. THIS is why this movie is so generic. How about a movie where people don't die for instance or maybe someone dies but when you least expect it? Oh that's right that would be to original would it because if it's "horror" then "someone have to die" and the creepier it is the better because we want that jumpscare audience in here.

>You act like this was a generic slasher movie when it clearly wasn't. Stop trying.

But it is a generic slasher movie if you start out fine and end up with almost everyone dead you dumbfuck.

>inb4 it must be a killer or else it doesn't count hurr
>>
>>69446543
Asking him to offer a movie that doesn't have a plot that "gives him no choice" has seemed to shut him up.
>>
>>69445416
generic isnt the right word, boring and predictable is the right word. It's like someone smashed The Crucible and Blair Witch Project.

It's technically well executed, but watching 6 people playing the blaming game for an hour does not make good horror, the script is it's weakest point and is way to drawn out, it just isnt interesting enough for a 1 and a half hour movie.

It's a good looking movie, but nothing outstanding, the director is a production designer and it shows in the movie. It was made with good intentions as a horror movie without jumpscares, but one of it's biggest flaws is that it never manages to create any sort of atmosphere.

Its a great showpiece that may land the director more jobs and I hope it does because he has potential, but it simply doesnt reach any highs at all.
>>
>>69442846
i think crowtits' sin wasn't so much wrath as envy. she was jelly of thomasin's beauty and thought she would steal away her husbands affections

Tarentino makes great slasher movies.

But they're not being "killed off" to him until the end. Baby gets lost and so does Caleb. All your posts are showing is that you lack the ability to pay attention. Take some aderall and watch the movie again, simplefriend.

Just watched this.

I like how the boy was seemingly brought into the arms of Jesus and finding paradise after death, opposed to Lucifer who offers worldly pleasure and nothing but suffering after death.

9/10 movie

would of been 10/10 if they showed her tits.

I watched the movie on rainierland and there was only a side-ways shot of her walking naked through he woods. never a shot of her from behind like I've seen sometimes posted in these threads.

was it part of a different release that got cut from the wider-release version?

I actually thought it looked really silly how all the shots of her walking naked through the woods showed this woman with massively developed glutes as though Tomasin was somehow a bodybuilder who did an hour of squats and donkeykicks everyday.

It was distracting and spoiled the immersion in favour of some lurid fanservice.
Would have been beter if they got a woman who actually looked as though she could possibly be a 14 year old girl walking through hte woods

How did the dad build a 2 story house by himself in like a day?

That's the biggest plot hole.

Did they just magically find a farm?

They suspected the killer was their daughter, there is no reason to move. There is a reason to send her away. Which what they intended to do.

It's almost like you haven't watched the movie at all.

>THIS is why this movie is so generic.

You really don't know what this word means do you? People dying one by one literally happens in every movie where more than one person dies. It's like saying "characters breathing is so generic".

>How about a movie where people don't die for instance

Watch straight up dramas/comedies. There are plenty of movies where nobody dies.

So your solution would be to turn a horror into a drama for it to not be "generic". GENIUS.

You're literally retarded and I'm done now. I regret wasting my time talking to you.

Shit you just replied to yourself there
>>
>>69446958

I don't think so.

In the movie if the devil exists then God exists. The boy questions if he would go to heaven because of his age and the father assures him that he is to young to be judged.

It's likely that Jesus did save him as he would be battling the Devil over the farm.

Just how I interpreted it.

The witch turns children into paste. When smeared onto her body and broom, it grants her the power of delicious flight.

Doesn't Eraserhead force Jack Dance to take care of the monster baby? Isn't it forced if it's, you know, in the script? I don't know about those other two.

Did the mother become a witch?

The devil asks her to read this book and she says "In a minute , I have to feed your brother"
then when it cuts back it shows her laughing loudly the same way that Tomasin starts laughing when she joins the coven of witches.

But if the mother agreed to become a witch why did she behave mostly normally the next day?
>>
>>69447020

>So your solution would be to turn a horror into a drama for it to not be "generic". GENIUS.

My thinking was that the devil sort of had one position available, so he made/ allowed the mum and thomasin duke it out for the top spot. He probably favoured thom though cause she was hotter/ she had basically been his target since the start imo

Gummo has no significant plot.
Eraserhead's plot is moved forward by the creature settling inside X.

So why did Spencer let her move into his apartment?
>muh I'm the father of the child
Why did he wait to kill the creature?
Because the script says that's what happens.

Also, it's some great irony that you don't accept "decide yourself" (>>69444168) while Lynch suggests the audience do exactly that with Eraserhead:

>Well, you know, it’s difficult to say. I always say the same thing: Every viewer is different. People go into a world and they have an experience, and they bring so much of what makes them react, it’s already inside of them. Each viewer gets a different thing from every film.

>>69447036

>>
>>69446991
>>69446993
then the question becomes
how did the father build a 2-story house by himself?

how did they bring enough supplies to eat on one wagon for tehm to survive while he set up the farm and waited for the first harvest?
what did they eat while he was building a 2-storey house by himself?
>>
>>69447261
I don't know if she ever got to reading the book. I think she needed to be "released" from her family to become a witch. But she could not let go of the memory of Caleb or Samuel. She went insane instead.
>>
>>69447261

The parents were hypocrites and relied on mindless Dogma and prayer instead of actually internalizing their sin. So they were slaughtered.

Celeb was saved because of his age.

Thomasin was innocent but neutral. The favorite prey of the Devil because he wants her to choose worldly pleasures, power and turn against God. Making her into his own image.
>>

>You really don't know what this word means do you? People dying one by one literally happens in every movie where more than one person dies. It's like saying "characters breathing is so generic".

>literally happens in every movie where

and then proceed to tell me this is not considered "generic"?
>>
>>69447261
The mother did not become a witch. She was offered the book but refused, which is why the baby changed into a crow.
>>
>>69447297
what was his plan?

Why did he need to retrieve the trap in order for thomasin to stay?
>>
>>69447235
It's left up to the imagination of the viewer.
>>
>>69447431
Wow, you're dense.

>people dying one by one is generic
>give me a movie where this doesn't happen
>a movie where nobody dies

That's you.

You could have said: Movies with humans are generic. And you'd be right. It doesn't make a good argument for a movie to be bad. You fucking tardfest.
>>
>>69447436
we don't see her refuse, she says something like "In a minute I need to feed your brother"

then the shot cuts away
then when it cuts back she is laughing hysterically.

which is signified to be the sign of joining the coven of the devil in the last scene.

I mean he was definately lusting after his sister at several points, I just thought that he was forgiven before his death (as shown by his religeous ecstasy) I get that that could also look like a blasphemous, mocking thing as well though
