I think you're confusing cheap fan film with indy project feel. The movie's a passion project with a tent-pole budget for the director. It'll be good.

If you're just here to anti-shill though, you'll have to try harder than that.

Tried WoW again like a year ago for the first time since TBC and Jesus it was just terrible what they had do to it
>>
I really think they should have just CGI'd the humans too. Would it have been so hard? They look out of place whereas it's usually the CGI that looks out of place
>>
I forgot the Orcs weren't real in the last one
>>
>>69435116
I want this to do well so they make a second one and we get red dragons burning alliance ships, Zuljin and Turalyon shenanigans.
>>
>>69434986
>>69435306
They'll never do it while WoW is still up, despite it being a good and likely lucrative idea, because it's like admitting their new content is garbage. Once they finally pull the plug on that old beast I have little down they'll grub for more money any way they can. Servers featuring "legacy content" will be a thing. Cap this.
>>
>>69435313
It's not about being hard, it's about selling a full CGI movie to the general public. They need to think about how to make a profit if they want to turn this into a franchise. Full CGI didn't work for Beowulf or Final Fantasy. It's a really hard sell. So they made the right choice and it looks fine to be honest.

the weird flat, white lighting reminds me unkindly of the hobbit. it just feels so fake and cheap. and oddly there's no consistency to it, the forest fight scene looks nothing like a real forest, but then the scene of the two orcs talking is fairly naturalistic.

>It's a fucking fantasy land. Why are you expecting a forest in Azeroth to look like a forest in your backyard?

the point is tone and suspension of disbelief. when people say the CGI is bad or the costumes look fake or w/e what they're responding to is the way the bad lighting draws attention to the artificiality of everything. that kind of pure white lighting is just incongruous with a medieval fantasy setting. the other extreme of it looking like a backyard is it looking like some guys surrounded by green screen -- which it does.

Supposedly it's a surfboard holder (which makes sense if you look at a higher resolution picture of the thing, as it does seem to have a surfboard under his right arm).

Not sure why they'd blur out the entire building. Maybe the dude who owned it made it and wanted it off google street view, and then realized as it went viral that he'd also rather not have people looking at his house from all over the world to look at the blurry spot of his statue.

I wonder how he'll feel about people coming to look at his house because it's one of the only ones to be completely blurred out.

WoW/Warcraft has little to do with it, the far East dives into anything high fantasy and/or high budget. Warcraft has both, and thus becomes an extremely safe and predictable dollar in the foreign market.

>>69437745
Back in classic WoW human gold farmers were very much a thing. We use to recruit them to our guild and watch them bicker with each other for our amusement, as they were forced to learn rudimentary English as the WoW engine didn't support Chinese, Korean, Russian, etc.

They were pretty grateful though, and often gave us free 16-slot bags they found while grinding Tyr's Hand.

I miss my gold farmer pals. ;_;

I hope they show Gul'dan's rise to power. Warlocks were despised in orc culture, then he staged a sort of coup. It won't be as true to the lore if he's just leading things from the get go.
>>
>>69434164
I wish they had gone full CGI. The effects are not good enough for the orcs to look real so it just ends up with a weird mix of actors and CGI.

If they had just went all in on animation instead it would have been completely fine. It wouldn't even be out of place since it's based on a fucking video game.
>>
>>69438098
>overblown and gaudy
Then you don't like the Warcraft look. Which is fine but it's commendable that they tried staying true to the game where they could.

A lot of people tend to have that reaction at first but as they play they enjoy it more and more. It gives the world a unique look and feel that is easily recognizable to them. I think you should give it a shot because it might grow on you.

>>69434164
The first scene with the magic blast was weird, felt stilted but that's probably because whatever they were talking about sounded like nonsense. The magic itself was kind of cool looking. Lots of interesting little details added some character, like Ragnar fake-helping the guy up, orc throwing a pebble at his buddy, etc. The battle scene looked coherently edited and I liked that it discarded obvious dramatic beats for efficiency in the part where Ragnar saves the kid - rather than a few seconds of the kid being like "oh shit the orc did not kill me, instead someone killed the orc!" you get a shot of the orc head falling by him, then immediately see Ragnar crouched there because that's all the information you need to see. Also a distinct lack of closeups, not sure how to feel about that when you have intimate moments like hot orc girl with Ragnar, or the long haired orc giving his monologue, but still being deemphasized in the frame. The CGI looks fine.
>>
>>69438712
Kekekek is from Starcraft and it's the reason kek became a thing in Warcraft. But the actual meme, as in just kek got popularized on 4chan because of Warcraft not Starcraft. It was the orc translation of lol in the MMO and people picked it here around 2005 when people were posting that orc face from wc3 too.

Topkek became of thing because kek was already a thing and someone spotted a turkish candy called "topkek" and thought it was funny. It got posted here and people picked it up.

Because you now realize how wrong you were about this movie right?
>>
>>69434164
The general sense I get from these scenes so far is a deliberate attempt by the filmmakers to defy expectations in large and small ways. You don't get a closeup when you'r expect one, the hero reaches out as if to help a guy up then feints him, two big majestic orc monsters survey their domain then one tosses a pebble at the other and they laugh. A battle starts with one of many characters being wiped out of a wide shot - this itself is now basically a trope, but not one especially common to fantasy genre. It seems like they were trying to go for a slight genre subversion similar to GoT season 1, which gives me faith in the level of creative control Duncan Jones got. Also makes it feel sort of like a video game, where no standard camera POV exists to show you what's important.
>>

Great: When the Orc yells Lok'tar Ogar in the forest scene.
The conversation sitting on the edge of the mountain scene looks great and flows nicely.

Everything else is iffy and some is simply not well done.

This movie I can see being ok to good at best. I foresee pacing issues, everything looking to "clean", it really shows in the library looking like a freshly done set with no age or wear and tear on anything. CGI looks incredible in some scenes but only barely passable in others, especially by comparison. I'm still not sold on female Orc and the humans sort of clash a bit with the CGI around them.

Here is to hoping.

my impressions:

1. they did the scale properly; orcs look huge and not just john cena bulky, and they hit like a Dreadnought

2. the humor has a unique feel to it -- almost like the routine fanaticism in WH40K

3. the CGI is impressive but it doesn't overwhelm the plot

4. the acting is okay and well-paced

5. doesn't seem to take itself too seriously but gives a good show

compared to Civil War, where the only two good scenes are the Antman special powers scene and the "I recruit Spidey" scene, and the other scenes feel as if they're just there to fill up some time

based on trailers, 6.5

hopefully it won't be so depressing as BvS, or self-absorbedly over-serious and flat like CA:CW

His complaint about the library was that it looked like a freshly made set no one had bothered to 'age.' So they slapped together a nice enough looking library, fine, but they forgot it's meant to look like it's a few hundred years old.

>>

They waited to make sure it was done right. They didn't want to do what other companies have done and rush to sell their IP only to get a shitty adaptation that tarnishes their game.

Blizzard kept veto rights and told 2 directors to fuck off. One of which was Sam Raimi who wanted to do his own generic spin on it by having humans be good and orcs bad and just using the warcraft name and universe to sell it. Blizzard said nah bro, that ain't Warcraft and vetoes his script.

Duncan Jones, who was an actual huge fan of the games, came in a pitched his idea. They were sold. And now we have a movie, and one that's more akin to a passion project, although with a tent-pole budget, than a generic money grab.
>>
>>69436854
It's the only reason Blizzard still sells. Rabid fanboys that a are loyal to the brand no matter what .
>>
>>69440973
why? it makes perfect sense
>>69441175
they are not, tauren were nomadic and there are a lot of variations of them in the other continents, same with the elves, they turned into high elves because they weren't close to the powers of the well of eternity. Also, remember that elves are just evolved trolls

That's the big risk of having both CGI and live actors side by side - they can look great on their own, but suddenly look off when next to each other.
>>

>MoP dungeons were aesthetically cool but very boring
agreed. and as much as I liked the Klaxxi as a faction, Siege of Nizou and the other one were fucking dreadfully boring. It was the worst doing those in Challenge mode or w/e cuz we were there for like an hour or two per night. Scholomance was breddy gud tho.
>>
>>69440637
I bet you would have said the same thing off incomplete footage before you actually watch the LotR trilogy. Building up a story and setting and being invested in it when you're watching a movie gives you a very different perspective.
>>
>>69441369
>Ragnar somehow similar to Lothar
lmao
>>
>>69435499
IIRC the orcs raped a human scouting party in a skirmish and decided that the entire human race was as weak as that one party. So they marched directly on Stormwind, met a castle wall, and got fucked in the ass by cavalry so hard the survivors had a mutiny.
>>
>>69440637
One, Warcraft is still in post production. The CG isn't finished.

Two, LotR took a much more grimdark approach to the aesthetics, whereas Warcraft is keeping the cartoony vibrance the RTS and MMO games have. Is this a good decision? I dunno. Personally, I'm glad they didn't cop out and put a grey filter on everything. On the other hand, I fear it won't work for a general audience.
>>
>>69439792
I hate how male orcs are these huge buff beast-like creatures and the females are just a green girl with big teeth. That's some lazy design.

His post, which you replied to, said "I foresee pacing issues, everything looking to "clean", it really shows in the library looking like a freshly done set with no age or wear and tear on anything."

After that, he went on to talk about CGI. Two separate points.

In terms of this being 'extreme nitpicking,' I'd expect a good movie with a decent budget to get that sort of thing right. If I should be expecting less because it's a Warcraft movie, well that's a shame. It's the sort of detail Jackson got right in LotR.
>>
>>69441044
I love how nitpicky people are being when for me, a movie about a world thats larger than life I expect it to look larger than life, not look normal like something average.

I disagree. If I were being as nitpicky as this I could pull out 50 different things from LotR even though I loved them. Like how the orcs were portrayed in generic fashion or how Legolas scene jumping onto a mammoth looked really fake.

Thing is it's the opposite. When you're watching a good movie with a good story you tend to let those little things slide because you're so invested in the story and what's going on and most things look so good, that it's really not that important.

No I'm saying in a fantasy world with magic you can't possibly know what things would look like and what they could do so comparing it to what you know from your local library is rather naive, especially when the argument is that it looks too "clean". Maybe that's just how things are in that universe and you'll get used to it.
