Look guys. In the games it was established that the Animus also functioned as a training tool, and as you played your ancestor in the game your modern-day character would start learning moves and becoming a better fighter in his real life.
The flaw in the game was that you can have all the knowledge you want, but if you don't train your muscles you won't be able to do anything. So having it be an arm that moves you about so that you physically act out your past to gain muscle memory as well actually makes sense.

The animus concept was just a pretense to have the player travel to exotic locations and jump around different time periods. There was no good story reason to include it and we could have enjoyed ourselves just as much if the entire game was set in the past.

The story and main protag were better in the 1st, i'll give you that. But the gameplay in the 2nd one was way stronger, and I had as much fun, even tho for other reason. After that I tried brotherhood for the multiplayer (which is nice, for a bit) and then they became milking the franchise and it turned to shit. I'm glad I experienced the start of it tho.

People on Ubisoft forums were complaining about Desmond's Story detracting from the game. Even though we finally got to the point where we could play as Desmond in modern day segments...then they kill him off at the end of that game. The game they built toward, because people wanted to do more dicking around in the past.
They stupidly killed him then decided. Oh, yeah. Abstergo randomly decides to become a gaming company. So, they create a console and game based on memories they retrieved from Desmond's dead body...yeah.
Then "Helix" happened. In which they basically turned that console into a cloud based VR console that served to do nothing but feed people templar propaganda, but got hacked by the Assassin's so we could really see what happened...which is what the past two games have been and it's just not interesting. The coolest parts are when Rebecca and Shawn pop up. Then they're gone for another 12 hours.
