Unsure why It Follows and Babadook keep getting put on the same level as The Witch.
It follows starts strong but falls apart in the last act getting downright stupid and boring, it had a decent atmosphere for the most part but was all style and no substance really.
Gabagool was bretty good, everytime they showed the monster it was stupid and the stalk velociraptor noises or whatever they were were really dumb, the mum had a pretty good performance though.
The Witch is just extremely immersive and definitely the best horror or the 2010s maybe and up there for the 2000s. Watching it in the theatre or on a quality entertainment system adds a lot to the movie, letting the score play a much bigger part, all of the acting was incredible, especially the father and it handled suspense building and tension very well. It is a shocking and stressful movie to watch.
Haven't seen Green Room yet but people on here have been saying it's good for the most part so I'm excited to see it.

Agreed. I've just seen It Follows out of those other three. Good idea to be sure, pretty good entertainment, just a little repetitive, but lacks the artfulness Witch has. Doesn't explore what it means to be a person at all, while the witch does a great job of it.

Why would we see a burd when she sees the kids if the burd isn't there? Based on the rest of the movie it would make more sense that she got BEAKED
>>69359126
I think the bird had picked at quite a bit off but their wasnt that much blood on her shirt. Maybe I need to watch the scene again. But I remember thinking the blood stain was tiny and the bird had gone ham on that titty.
>>69359126
Damn, now i think, movie would be better if they didn't show crow. Just bloodstain after breastfeeding her dead baby.
Would you sin with Thomasin? How?
Yeah it was definitely a dream. She wasnt in pain or anything either on waking up.
>>69359378
Well, she could be just crazy enough to not feel pain.
>>69355556
The atmosphere and music are unsettling but overall it's just a bit creepy. The best film iv'e seen in ages.
>>69351605
WTF I FUCK GOATS NOW
>>69359530
Maybe. But the blood stain is so tiny and that bird took alot of good pecks out of that milkbag. And thematically it would make sense after the goat lactated blood.
>>69352518
Wrong. It Follows had a very good first half that immediately went to shit when the monster grabbed the main girl by the hair at the beach. From that point forward it stopped being a terrifying, abstract being and became a B-movie tier invisible monster shapeshifter. It was stupid, and the movie lost all intrigue and tension when the idea of being able to physically interact with it without immediately dying was introduced.
>>69359608
That was such a minor thing, that it would only distract and upset full-blown autists
>>69359378
Just from one breast? nah. the crow was real, as were the other animals (goat, rabbit) in the movie. Much more believable to me that she was so crazy at that point (she was always somewhat possessed herself, in any case) that she didn't feel pain from having a little blood drawn rather than blood came out of exactly one of her breasts.
>>69359673
How is completely dumbing down how the monster works halfway through the movie a "minor thing"? Throughout the first half of the movie the monster has 4 established rules: No one else can see it, it can look like anyone, it will only walk towards you, and you die once it gets to you. It is never shown what the monster does to you, but you are shown in the beginning of the movie the after effects of it, which was bizarre and violent enough to make you take the monster seriously.
As soon as the monster got within contact range of the girl, and all it does it pull her hair, the whole thing became a big mess. People who weren't able to see the monster were suddenly trying to fight it off, it was knocking shit around, it was all retarded.
>>69359785
If in the dream she was breastfeeding out of one breast it would make sense to only have one breast "lactating". And she was not somewhat possessed throughout, that doesnt even make sense how could someone be "somewhat" possessed?
>>69360081
>that doesnt even make sense how could someone be "somewhat" possessed?
how can a goat talk?
this a movie about a magical witch
>>69360111
Or the deliriums of a puritanical family and primarily the teenage daughter. But I know I'm forcing my hand with the totally realist approach
>>69360111
Man what the fuck are you on about? The mother goes crazy from grief, similarly to how the father loses it because of his inability to cope with the circumstances. There's no evidence to suggest she was somewhat possessed the whole time you just pulled that out of your ass.
>>69359721
>>69359721
what's that?
>>69360081
>>69360287
possessed was the wrong word. Evil had touched her, though. Either she was lactating blood (obviously something's fucked up) or she was driven from bed by the dream and the crow was there waiting for her (that's not normal crow behavior: again, something's obviously fucked up). I'm saying that her already being somewhat crazed suggests her not feeling any pain is believable, not to mention people do all sorts of weird shit while sleepwalking. This is a minor point, though. I don't really see any reason to discuss it further. We each have our own interpretations.
>>69360287
Well, boy wanted her to read book with him, but she choose to feed baby-crow instead. Later satan talks about book with Thomasine too, so i don't think it was a dream, just illusion for her.
>>69360514
Fair enough I'm not as sure about my point as I'm arguing anyway. The bloodstain is vertical meaning she definitely bled while upright aka not sleeping.

GOAT
The goat connection may be even more significant than the cat. It goes back to antiquity. A powerful clan in ancient Greece, the Palentids, claimed they were originally descended from a sacred goat. The horned and hoofed Greek goat-god, Pan, is one of the most important entities of Witchcraft.
Thor, the Norse god, was worshiped before the other gods of Valhalla. Some say he existed as early as the stone-age. Thor drove a great chariot, pulled by two giant, powerful goats. They symbolized thunder and lightning.
Medieval legends say that the Devil created the goat. Satan himself often appeared with goat's horns, and sometimes changed his shape completely into a goat. During the Sabbaths, he traditionally came as a three-horned goat, the middle one used as a lamp.
>>69352191
CROW
The crow is almost too obvious. The medieval villagers considered it ugly, for some reason. Actually, it's a beautiful, glossy black bird with a truly elegant shape, but there's no accounting for taste. Perhaps they disliked the crow because it emits a hoarse cry rather than a song, and it's obviously quite good at stealing things from farmers. The villagers thought the crow spied for the witch all day by flying anywhere it wanted, and then reported at night. And it could easily accompany her on her own flights to the Sabbaths.
>>69351605
Why didn't Tomasin fuck with her brother?
I was watching the movie hopping there would be some wincest.
>>69352269
HARE
Hares were strongly associated with witches. The hare is quiet and goes about its business in secret. They are usually solitary, but occasionally they gather in large groups and act very strangely, much like a group of people having a conference. A hare can stand on its hind legs like a person; in distress, it utters a strange, almost human cry which is very disconcerting to the listener.
Watching such behavior, people claimed that a witch could change her form at night and become a hare. In this shape she stole milk or food, or destroyed crops. Others insisted that hares were only witches' familiars.
These associations caused many people to believe hares were bad luck, and best avoided. A hare crossing one's path, particularly when the person was riding a horse, caused much distress. Still, the exact opposite superstition claimed that carrying a rabbit's or hare's foot brought good luck. There is no logic to be found in superstitions.

They were excellent, and I think a big part of it was the direction. I was reading an article about the movie, and it discussed the scene with caleb's death extensively. Just finished it five minutes ago. It was pretty good. I felt like the father character carried the film. Also, why do some some people claim that some of that shit was "imaginary"? The narrative never veers that way. As far as I'm concerned everything in the movie was literal. I'm not sure I understand the other interpretations.
>>69371251
They should have left it ambiguous. Outright making it Satan did it undermines the whole underlying theme of Puritan paranoia. You know what's another movie that could have been better without "it was Satan?" That Poo in Loo M. Night Shamalyan's Devil. Not a good sign when your ending reminds me of crap like that.

Im glad it was literally the Devil. Im sick of movies just going "Maybe it was all a dream?" at the end
>>69371347
It's a folktale. Folktale's don't have ambiguous endings I think. And honestly, I think ambiguity is the easy way out especially for a horror movie. It's much more satisfying if they state yes, this is Satan.
>>69371347
Literally everything veered towards it and leaving it ambiguous would have been a cop out comparable to cuckoldry.
And what was ambiguous actually? As soon as the boy met the witch in the woods the jig was up.
>>69371406
I don't think we see his face.
What killed the twins?
>>69371417
>>69371435
>>69371442
Just because it's been done before doesn't make it inherently bad. A well made movie can take a tired cliche and do it well enough that even that is well done. The whole movie has the characters questioning Satanic forces at work. When the ending just says, "yes it was Satan" everything leading up to that feels like waste because the entire time they were just being lead to their demise by supernatural forces beyond their control. It didn't have to end in an obvious way of making the audience ask if everything was just a dream but it shouldn't have shown Satan and the witches flying either.
>>69371535
It's not because it would have been cliché. It would literally make the story weaker.
I bet you just saw the movie once. Watch it again and you'll see how many foreshadowing there is.
>>69371501
Nothing, they didn't die. They just up and disappeared. They're probably roaming the woods doing devil things, singing songs about Black Philip for eternity.
>>69371557
Thomasane?
>>69371406
All you see is a slight sliver of light over his eyes. He has one goat foot, and cowboy riding spurs on the other. That's all I could make out.
>>69371617
>They're probably roaming the woods doing devil things, singing songs about Black Philip for eternity
This is a fantastic scenario. VVitchverse when?
>>69371535
I do not understand why you think everything leading to the revelation of Satan's presence is a waste. One the other hand all the allusions, symbolism and supernatural elements would've been wasted if the movie left you wondering if it was real or not. I think the director made the correct choice and the movie is better for it.
>>69371589
I still think the current ending makes it weaker. When you solidify what was happening, when you give a concrete answer, you're making the plot more basic. Instead of questioning what happens and thinking about it for days, you're just leaving the movie saying "Oh, it was just Satan. Well that was enjoyable, now onto another flick."
My guess is that you're tired of movies that try to do that and fail because there are a lot, but the movies that succeed at it are usually elevated higher than others.
>>69371501
They're broom oil now.
>>69371717
It's not about the what, it's about the why. Yes, the answer is that it's just Satan, what are the implications of this. Not everything needs a Nolan tier ending.
>>69370013
Now do a translation of the witches chant at the end!
Pity that this movie doesn't have like any memes :(
>>69371694
I'd like to see some witch hunters track the demonspawn down and show them the light of Christ in the form of being burnt at the stake. Fuck those creepy little shits.
>>69371717
Well if you want to, I guess one can imagine thatThomasine had completely lost her mind by the end. Talking to goats, and seeing floating witches. But I don't see how that betters anything.
>>69371717
Maybe it's because I just watched Babadook last week but I liked that there was a definitive answer to what was going on. Babadook's ending is full "WAS IT REAL? WAS IT IN HER HEAD?" and honestly I would have been a bit annoyed if the same thing happened with this movie.
>>69371717
No, the worst thing about Inception was it's ending. Because there is no real ambiguity. Just a semblance of it.
The same would have happened to this movie. As soon as we see the baby getting stolen by the witch there is no ambiguity.
People really need to stop this meme. There was never any real ambiguity and "leaving it ambiguous" would have just fell flat on it's face upon scrutiny.
>>69372048
The Babadook wasn't a "was it real was it in her head?" scenario. It was just a really poorly done, pleb as fuck metaphor that idiots think is actually deep. Totally different.
>>69372052
I'm understanding where you guys are coming from now, but I still don't think the current outcome is better either. It's just a movie about a witch and Satan fucking with a Puritan family. Nothing more. There's no discussion to be had about it aside from the excellent actors and atmosphere and dat ass.
>>69372048
>Babadook's ending is full "WAS IT REAL? WAS IT IN HER HEAD?"
Once we saw them feeding it worms in the basement, it was real. Unless the explanation is that it's some type of visual metaphor for her repressing homicidal thoughts.
God damn, the last 15 minutes of that movie were awful.
>>69372052
But of course there is ambiguity. The film is deeply ambiguous, as to the point that the theory it's all in her head actually holds value. And we DON'T see the baby getting stolen by anyone, much less a witch.
>>69372128
>It's just a movie about a witch and Satan fucking with a Puritan family.
And it proved that just a movie about those things can be amazing. Somehow, people have gotten the idea that well made, intelligent, respectable films can't be about magic or the fantastic, they MUST be about the human psyche, or the breakdown of the family, or institutionalized oppression, or whatever.
They don't. When you approach this stuff without a hint of self-awareness and you treat it with respect, the results can be amazing.
>>69372128
Thomasin's sin is gluttony/greed.
The father's sin is pride.
The mother's sin is wrath.
The brother's sin is lust.
The twins are sloth and envy.
It's a story about characters than pretend to be better than they are and they get punished for it.
Except for Thomasin, who gets rewarded by the devil for her honesty.
>>69371557
Tell me about thomasin. Why does she wear the shift?
>>69371717
>>69371804
Everyone has different preferences. I enjoyed the understated Satan reveal because I thought it flowed well. Thomasin needed no convincing at that point, what with her family dead and all, so it just seemed like a natural progression. And devilry was afoot already clearly with caleb's death and the mother's dream and the baby's kidnapping and whatever the hell happened to the twins. I guess you're lucky, though, in that you can idealize the movie by just leaving out that last part. Either she died of starvation there or went back to town and was burned at the stake; simple.
The movie deals with how a family falls apart because they cannot uphold their strict beliefs.
It is also a love letter to folk legends of old, but the supernatural elements are secondary to the drama. The question whether it's real or not is not important. Ipersonallythink any ambiquity of the supernatural unnecessarily takes away focus from the real story.
>>69372317
Blah, this WAAAY too much stretching on the sins thing
>>69372151
Hm. I think I disagree with that. The only ambiguity that remains for me is whether they were doomed from the start or their actions directly led to their downfall. I guess thomasin admits she has sinned early on, which could be the reason for the baby being taken. The father forfeits himself when he locks the children in the barn/lies about the cup, I suppose. Caleb has lust for his sister and the witch. Idk about mother and Twins; maybe they were all doomed from beginning when leaving town for their "conceit."
>>69372317
Good breakdown. But when does thomasin display those sins? Are you alluding to something before the movie starts or after the baby disappears? I guess she disobeys her parents along with Caleb when they go to the woods, and lies when she accuses the twins of witchcraft.
>>69372493
Not entirely. The reason this family is susceptible to the witches/satan is because they are sinners. A stronger family would have been able to resist.
>>69372151
Are you kidding me? We literally see the witch walk through the woods with the baby, chop the baby into little pieces and smear the blood over her wrinkly old body.

>>69372526
She talks to Caleb about wanting to eat apples and a better food. She's also accused of stealing the silverware for a reason. Because her parents think she's greedy.
Any ideas on what caused the family to be cast out into the wilderness in the first place? What was the father on trial for?
>>69372574
Yeah, Satan is
>>69372574
Of course not. Why do you think it's so good?
Niggers ruin everything.
>>69372613
My guess is that he started trouble in the colony by calling the inhabitants out as not true christians.
He got called before the council to quit his shit, but in his pride refused, and was exiled.
>>69372613
The father probably didn't want the injuns in the town or have them at least baptized.
>>69371084
Thank you, neat read.
>>69372548
Still could be interpreted as the beginning of Thomasin's delusions
>>69372613
I found this.
> I shall say something of the nature of excommunication. It is a punishment executed in the name and according to the will of Christ, whereby a person who hath heretofore enjoyed the privileges of a member of the visible church of Christ is cast out of the church and delivered unto Satan.
http://www.apuritansmind.com/puritan-favorites/jonathan-edwards/sermons/the-nature-and-end-of-excommunication/
>>69372768
Doesn't make sense bro. Let me guess. Caleb wanting to fuck the witch was also a delusion? Even though Thomasin had nothing to do with it.
Let me guess, Caleb going insane was also a delusion? HOW?? WHY?
You people with your stupid fan theories are literally the worst. You see things that aren't there. The only ones deluded are you.
>>69372827
Everything, if someone wishes, can be explained realistically, with psychological and symbolical answers. It's not a fucking 'fan theory'. If the film is created with tones of ambiguity, then to choose the straight road is a fair option. Caleb's situation, as all the others, can make sense as deliriums. Sure, magic and supernatural is more interesting, so I'm merely observing that the film allows more explainings.
>>69372574
Black Phillip nigga
>>69373079
Youre reading too much into it. Its a spooky movie about witches, its not about the human mind at all.
>>69372563
I remember reading an interview of the director and he said they spoke enochian.
>>69373079
this is some imdb message board-tier shit
Was it a happy ending for Thomasine?
>>69373231
Holy fuck that's a nice touch.
>>69373325
yes
>>69373079
mystery =/= ambiguity
I've watched the movie 3 times and it's not ambiguous at all.
There's a point where Thomasin even foreshadows the ending: "I am the witch, I am. When I sleep, my spirit slips away from my body and dances naked with the Devil. That's how I signed his book."
If they left it ambiguous this would not have come true nor would it make any sense to be there in the first place.
The whole movie is about sin and punishment. Literally almost every scene talks about sin. There is no reason to think it's all just in her mind. Especially when things happen around her that she's not a part of and would have no idea about.
Also, it would just cheapen everything that happened.
I'd like a taste of Thomasin's buttery ass
>>69373273
>>69373142
Reading too much into it? A realistic approach is the default, considering magic isn't real. You just choose blindly to just accept the supernatural angle. I repeat, the film is ambiguous. I don't see none of that as a problem, btw.
>>69373231
>enochian
that's rad as fuck
>>69373363
I don't think it would cheapen the film so much. And the whole sin paranoia and obsession could be interpreted as the obvious context and fuel where the whole witch/devil business would happen in the minds of these repressed isolated people. But then again, it could be all true too.
>>69373371
A realistic approach is not the default in a supernatural movie. This is your first mistake.
Your second mistake is the ambiguity. Which only proves you did not pay attention and do not understand basic deconstruction of a movie.
You can't even pinpoint the overall theme that was blatantly smacked in your face every 5 minutes.
Your fan theory, and yes it's nothing more than a fan theory is that it's all in her head. Not only is it cheap, it's totally misguided and based on nothing but >muh ambiguity.
If you had any deconstruction skills you'd be laughing at how stupid that theory is.
And if you don't believe me, just read what the director himself says about the movie.
http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2016/02/23/the_witch_director_robert_eggers_on_the_real_history_behind_the_movie_s.html
He literally just made a fairy tale of old. That's all it is. That's all it ever will be.
>>69373231
It was the Eleventh Enochian Key to be precise.
>>69372151
You're retarded. There's a whole fucking sequence with the witch and the baby that doesn't involve any of the other characters whatsoever. Completely divorced from what any of the other characters are doing or thinking at the time. It ain't in anyone's head. It's fucking happening.
To argue otherwise is just being a fucking contrarian.
>>69370013
F-fuck.

>>69352191
>>69352100
Not gonna lie, these pics are cool af
>>69373631
I disagree but it's very understable how the 'taking the supernatural angle' is the most popular one, with thought applied to it or not.
Also, my first mistake isn't a mistake at all, considering that the definition that this is a supernatural movie isn't in any way absolute. What proves it? The film itself, where ambiguity is existent.
>>69373746
Indeed, in that specific moment it's there's not direct correlation , but it still could be put as a general thought by the group about the situation based on their beliefs.

>>69373825
>Also, my first mistake isn't a mistake at all, considering that the definition that this is a supernatural movie isn't in any way absolute.
Read what the director says. Fucking nut job.
The ambiguity only exists in your mind because you want it there.
"taking the supernatural angle" is the only angle this movie takes. You fucknut.
It's literally like saying Harry Potter fell on his head when he was a kid, now he has a scar and delusions about being a wizard.
That's how stupid you sound right now.
>>69373825
I just don't understand what any ambiguity of the supernatural does to better the movie. It's about how the family turns upon one and eachother during their hardship. It does not matter if the threat is supernatural or not, what matters is the actions they take in response.
>>69373959
Not quite, Harry Potter films aren't as ambiguous as The VVitch. The ambiguity isn't only in my mind, it's in the film, but you even refuses to see that, so there's no advances here.
>>69373995
I agree actually
>>69374043
Give me a specific example of this ambiguity. I dare you. I fucking double dare you.
>>69374084
Not him, but how about when Fatherpeasant attempts to shoot the wabbit? It's strongly implied that the hare is the devil or some shit, which causes his gun to fuck up, but as the jailbait says later in the movie, he's not a particularly good hunter.
Did he fuck up or was it muh witch?
>>69374121
And this is an indication that it's all in her head?
It's pretty clear that the hair, the goat and the crow are all manifestations of the devil.
>>69374084
As said before in the thread, in the first arguable supernatural thing, the baby simply disappears and after that a figure is seen carrying it through the woods. That could be 'real' or Thomasin delirium's beginning. And all can sprout from there.
>>69374043
>I agree actually
Well okey. Perhaps this is just a matter of taste then. I just prefer there actually being a supernatural element, and that being the end of that, as it's not what the film is really about.
