We actually haven't read Quentyn's death on page. We break off when it gets interesting, and on top of that a lot of the descriptions revolving around his death don't make sense.
Drinkwater overacts his mourning of Quentyn, despite showing no emotions when his friends get killed earlier in the story. The calm collected character acts emotional all of a sudden? It seems he's putting on an act. Arch behaves differently too.
And don't forget: Getting killed by dragonfire doesn't take days, you die almost instantly, with your eyes popping out of your skull and melting. See

I think you should rewatch that series if you think it's just about dragon eggs. The Quentyn quest was supposed to fail. Why else would Quentyn be placed amongst the most bitter enemies of the Martells, the Yronwoods?
