Was it their plan to portray Superman as an unlikeable asshole? Brooding and distant and mean and threatening.
What's wrong with showing him as a nice, kindhearted, sweet guy who wants to do good?
>>
it would go against the jesus/god symbolism.
>>
Being nice isn't badass and they wanted to make Superman's image more hip and cool. Being angry and punching things in anger is badass.
>>
>>69292093
>it would go against the jesus/god symbolism.

But more often that not Jesus was a nice guy
>>
>>69292039
>What's wrong with showing him as a nice, kindhearted, sweet guy who wants to do good?
Because in the 70's special effects were shit so you had to rely on acting and character. Now that special effect technology is great fuck that we will have superman kill and destroy.
>>
>>69292039

>that scene in MoS 1 when he catches a soldier from the helicopter and asks if he's ok right before pushing him out of danger as Non attacks

Good scene. Also what's with Superman not giving a fuck about fire in this movie?

>gas station on fire after he punts the Batmobile into it
>just flies off and leaves it

>fire in Mexico
>stands there soaking in the crowd while the building burns down

>congress blown up
>just stands there looking guilty

Christ.
>>
>>69292039
Because Marvel already stole the upbeat, bright and colorful superhero genre.

Meanwhile, the DC cinematic universe revolved entirlerly around Batman, meaning every movie has to use that tone, even if it's not compatible.
>>
>>69292225
they should do bible stories with superman
>>
>>69292039
He wasn't portrayed that way at all.

He wasn't brooding, distant, mean, nor threatening.

He was trying every way he could to relate to the gravity of what he perceived as petty issues. Here you have a guy with seemingly limitless power and a populace that is shattered and demoralized but still looking for some excuse to unify. They end up using him and he ends up accepting, but in BvS that theme is explored more maturely than in any of the previous Superman flicks. He does nice guy shit, too, but calling him brooding, distant, mean and threatening is sophomoric.
>>
>>69292369
>not threatening
>"the bat is dead. consider this mercy."
>>
>>69292327
There's a scene when he fights Zod where Zod kicks a tanker at him, he arrogantly flies over it and it crashes into the building behind him completely destroying it. Like he could have easily stopped it but choose to show off and everyone there died.
>>
>>69292225

Superman had two god awful sequels in the mid 80s, so some dumbass at Warner decided Superman wasn't cool anymore and they stopped making movies about him. Superman Returns was a return to idealistic friendly Superman, but that movie was boring as shit and flopped, so WB assumed the problem was that Superman wasn't popular anymore, not that the movie was bad.

So they turn to Hack Snyder, who hates Superman, and makes a Superman movie about how awful it is to be Superman, and people reject it. WB still doesn't understand and will just say that Superman doesn't sell because it's easier to blame the audience than accept responsibility for making shit movies.

Meanwhile, Marvel makes their cinematic Captain America emblematic of everything Superman is supposed to be (idealistic morally pure hero meant to inspire us to be better) and he's loved by all and his movies make bank even in an era of anti-american sentiment.
>>
>>69292527
Why didn't he just bring him in right then and there? He literally just killed like a dozen people. Fucking dead. And Superman crashes his car and threatens him. Because he's a vigilante. And what's Superman? A goverment official?

>>
>>69292039
Zach Snyder loves anything dark, twisted, brooding and gothic. Superman isn't that, batman is exactly that. So we get a great batman in BvS and a continuation of the dark brooding self-doubting Superman.

You can tell his philosophy on superheroes just by how he treats those 2 characters. He seems to legit hate superman, despite the Jesus stuff, and love Batman.
>>
>>69292697
He should have brutaly raped that guy. That's real punishment.

it's been the trend since Nolan rebooted batman back in 2005 to make superhero movies dark and gritty. also when they made the Donner movie the dark and gritty superman that we are adapting now wasn't a thing yet so they adapted the fun, heroic superman from the silver age. it was probably a better time.

Superman Returns had a stalkish, brooding, deadbeat dad, emo Superman and he still felt like the fun, heroic version anyway.

A few lines of dialogues, a few facial expressions, and MoS would have felt like old school Superman too.

Zack Snyder is a dumbass with delusions. If you want to know exactly what I mean, go watch any interview with him where he talks about his "craft", or about superheroes, then watch the actual films he creates.

He went off on how boring and stupid classic heroes like Superman and Batman are in his Watchmen interviews(a movie which he copied almost directly 1v1 straight from the graphic novel and still manage to misinterpret. Every change was made for the worse.) Moore wrote a tense Cold War Era nuclear paranoia analog that made most of us question the nature of our superhero worship the very nature of power, yet all ole Zack attack picked up on was "mature" superheroes stuff with murder and rape.

Zack Snyder took Superman, the most archetypal superhero and made him a brooding asshat. What's worse, is that he did it in the most contrived ways possible. The tornado death of his adoptive father is the perfect analogy for Snyder's shit: needless noisy, packed with horrible CGI, ignores all laws of reality(even just near a tornado there are extreme wind gusts powerful enough to move cars and certainly powerful enough to knock a fat Kevin Costner off of one foot, massive hail, and, depending on where its been, razor sharp debris. Victims don't just vanish in a melodramatic cloud of "wind". They're violently ripped away.) and somehow completely misses the point of the original.

Superman can move fucking mountains. He can fly. He is omnipotence personified, yet even he is powerless to stop something as simple as a heart attack. For everything he can do, he can't save his father. Why is Superman a boy scout? Because he's playing a role he's not comfortable with. His father's death left him with enough guilt that he spends the rest of his life trying to make up for that failure. Imagine that fall. Imagine KNOWING that you can do EVERYTHING, and then learning in the most painful way that you can't. THAT'S the power of the heart attack scene. It's so fucking human.

I never understood the tornado scene. In the original his father dies of a heart attack or something, and it shows that Superman cant save everyone.
But he can literally save his father from that tornado without being noticed. His father doesn't even need to go get the dog, Clark could've just gotten into the car, been flung out of there and claim that he miraculously survived after the car landed.

Your complaints are with the movie as a whole. They are not with the scene nor Superman's image. The movie didn't establish how Supes gets to know any of the shit he knows or WHEN he gets to know them therefore there is going to be a gap in understanding.

Still
>not inferring Supes' near omniscience extends to issues beyond Bruce Wayne's identity

You pretty much have to accept that he knew some information about the chase. If he flies around the world to save a hispanic girl he's not going to just let murder 50 feet away from him go. It is implied.

He could have got the dog himself.

Because most people dont want political conflicts with superheros, I already have the news for that. It's fantasy meant to take you to a fantasy reality.
Cant say if it worked out for Civil War, havent watched that film yet, but I'm guessing it worked because Marvel movies doesnt take itself so seriously, its not trying to be art, just comics on the big screen.

Batfleck isn't the real Bruce Wayne. It's just Azrael pretending to be him.

People weren't pissed that superman killed Zod you blithering moron
The problem was what adistant asshole he was, how he doesn't care about human life around him, how he just looks at huge disasters were dozens of people could be dead and he doesn't even flinch, were saving human lives is more a chore than the reason he's superman, how Pa' kent told him to let all the children die.
Captain America kills bad guys because he's a friggin soldier, but he is concerned about his friends dying, he tries to save people arround him when mayhem is happening.
Nobody would have given a shit if superman only for just a fucking second looked back at the destruction and showed some pain
>>
>>69294535
Do you think people going to the theater gives a shit about any alternate superhero universe?
>>
Why cant you idiots understand basic things? How is this not the most sympathetic Clark Kent ever? This man has been through the crucible of hardship, and still at the end of the day he CHOOSES to be Superman. His mom did not knit him his costume on the kitchen table, he didn't lift tractor freeweights with his beaming dad beside him, he went out and made his own destiny even apart from what his real father told him to do.

>Superman...was just a dream of a farmer from Kansas

There's no mention of Jor-El's words to him about saving the world. In a world without superheroes, how could you possibly come up with the idea to become the first? Ever since finding out his abilities, he always held that dream to be a hero and save people. His adoptive father wanted to protect him so much, he'd rather die than let that dream consume Clark. Oh he's not smiling while saving that cat out the tree, who the fuck cares! He's still out there happily serving the planet having made the decision to use his gifts in that way.
>>

>>69295176
for fuck's sake man jonathan didn't tell him
"clark, you absolutely should have let those children die because fuck them"
he said
"Maybe; but there's more at stake here than our lives or the lives of those around us. When the world... When the world finds out what you can do, it's gonna change everything; our... our beliefs, our notions of what it means to be human... everything. You saw how Pete's mom reacted, right? She was scared, Clark."

he is in no way telling clark to not do anything, the maybe is simply him expressing how hard that question is for him, even his reasoning is in no way self serving.
funnily enough, the quote that people accuse of selfishness happens to be same moment jonathan expresses concern for the whole world

both of his fathers believed he was put on earth for a reason, so he always believed that. What a stupid argument. His brooding was insubstantial in Snyder's film. He doesn't even act like a real person dealing with hard issues. Just a character that's steeped in artificial hardship.

>not understanding criminals are people too and if you just baked some brownies together you'd get along famously

not the guy you're replying to but the guy who said he deserved it doesn't mean it in a sadistic way. that character was clearly presented in an unsympathetic way and that truck more than likely isn't his livelihood, the next day he probably hitched a ride back wherever he was from

if there's an "issue" here, it can only be in how that sequence is a gag, which i get that people wouldn't want.

I guess it says something about how things are in America today when Superman is some brooding edgelord who fights against another superhero. And meanwhile at Marvel the heroes are fighting each other too. And Snyder is talking about how awesome it would be if Batman got raped because it's so realistic and gritty.

Yeah, things are not going well.

srs, there's a case for thinking of the gospels as works of literature. with all the references to aspects of jewish culture and the current culture it isn't hard to imagine a lot of shit happening to be extended metaphor, which also makes more sense of what is going on. literally capeshit of those times
