Not going to be seen on VHS. VHS was a chore to pause and unapuse since it was mechanical.

Yeah, both the red and yellow text were colored with markers (less noticeable in yellow because it's a lighter color, but it's there). Another shots makes it pretty evident that the letters are cutouts

That's degraining. They use blur to remove the grain. Then they redraw the image. He looks like a cartoon because THEY ARE. They're drawings on top of live action.
